Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a sampling picture which features a small quantization level number and also give the most preferable impression in accordance with the estimation of the human eyes by examining and utilizing the density level which is most important to the human eyes among the subject pictures.
CONSTITUTION: The picture information is read by the image sensor and then supplied to quantization circuit 1 in the form of electric picture signal 6. Signal 6 is quantized into n-units of quantization level via circuit 1 and then supplied to level counters 21∼2n , thus the emerging frequency of the picture element being counted with every quantization level of n-units. Then the maximum and minimum value are detected via maximum/minimum level detector circuit 3 among the count value of counters 21∼2n. Both the maximum and minimum levels thus obtained plus condition setting signal 7 are processed through level control circuit 4, and sampling circuit 5 is actuated to quantize the desired level value and thus to obtain sampling signal 8.
