Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the volume of radioactive waste, by melting and solidifying it.
CONSTITUTION: A crucible 2 is placed in a vessel 1. The radioactive waste 5 such as metal powder, chips, pipes, etc. is put into the crucible 2. The waste 5 is molten by a heater 6 which is integrated with a lid 7 and can be moved up and down. The molten waste is then solidified. Other waste is put on the soldified waste 11 and molten by the heater 6. Such processes are repeated, thereby filling the crucible 2 with the solidified waste 11. Moletn lead 12 is poured into the gap 4 between the crucible 2 and the vessel 1 and onto the top of the solidified waste 11 so that the waste is sealed up.
