Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain fibrous or octahedral quick lime, in a high yield, useful as heat insulating material, furnace material and reinforcing material for synthetic resin by thermally decomposing calcium carbonate in a melt contg. alkali halide in the presence of alkali carbonate to grow crystals.
CONSTITUTION: Calcium carbonate and alkali carbonate such as sodium carbonate are added to a melt of alkali halide such as sodium chaloride and heated at 700W 1100, pref. 800W900°C for 1/2W4, pref. 1/2W2 hr to thermally decompose the calcium carbonate, thus growing fibrous or octahedral quick lime crystals. The amt. of the alkali carbonate added is 4W30, pref. 6W30% to the amt. of the alkali halide, and that of the calcium carbonate is 0.2W20, pref. 0.5W10 parts to 10 parts of the alkali halide. By this method 7W15 μ thick and 0.5W30 mm long quick lime crystals of a uniform shape can be obtd. in a yield reaching 90%.
