Abstract

PURPOSE: Heater and/or heat insulator is inserted between the outer wall of U concentration cold trap and adjeacent N2 liquid phase, thereby preventing the formation of supercold liquid O2 within the trap so that explosion or fire hazard is effectively eliminated.
CONSTITUTION: The cold trap 1 ia installed so that its outer wall including the bottom wall is spaced from liquid N2 by the partition wall 7. Between the cold trap wall and the partition 7, an electric heater 8 is placed. A temperature sensor 9 is installed at the bottom of the cold trap 1. The sensor 9 works so that if the temperature approaches O2 liquifaction temperature -183°C, or more typically, if it reaches below -170°C, the sensor actuates the heater 8 through the controller 10 so as to maintain the temperature within the cold trap below -170°C. Uniformly distributed temperature is provided to the cold trap 1 due to insulating material such as alumina 11 which is inserted between the cold trap outer wall and the partition wall 7.
