Abstract

PURPOSE: At butt welded portion and its neighborhood, outer peripherical surface is melted, and inner peripherical portion is cooled at the same time. The process causes residual compressive stress at the inner surface, thereby preventing stress corrosion cracking.
CONSTITUTION: A shallow groove 4 is cut through around the cylindrical body 1 at outer peripherical surface of sensitive structure 3, 3 of welding zone 2. Annular electrode-holder 6 having a plurality of discharge electrodes 5 which direct inwardly is arranged so that the electrode tips face the groove 4. Cooling medium 8 is fed from not shown source, and injected into the cylindrical body 1 to cool the inner surface. From each electrode 5 arc discharge is directed at the groove 4 to melt the sensitive structure 3 at its peripherical outer surface, while simultaneously the electrode-holder 6 is rotated in one direction. Meanwhile, innert gas is jetted through the nozzle 7 to prevent oxidation of the welding zone.
