Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an elevator system, in which a plurality of elevators having counterweights of different weights but having the same rated capacity are employed and operated selectively to reduce power consumption required for operating elevators.
CONSTITUTION: In general, power consumption of elevator is minimal under the condition that weight of the cage and the counterweight are balanced. It is presumed here that three elevators are employed in the system and one of them is designed to have a counterweight of a weight corresponding to about 30% of the rated capacity whereas remaining two elevators are designed to have a counterweight, respectively, of a weight corresponding to about 50% of the rated capacity. With such an arrangement, all of the elevators are operated at the peak time in the morning and in the evening but the "30%" elevator is operated precedently at other off-peak time. Although power consumption is increased at the peak time by the use of "30%" elevator, total power consumption in a day can be reduced as compared with that of the conventional systems, since the system is operated long and elevators are used more frequently at the off-peak time.
