Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a cation exchange membrance with high resistance to chemicals, oxidation and heat,and good electrochemical properties by polymerizing a copolymer of a fluorine-contg. vinyl monomer having a cation exchange group and a fluorine-contg. polyvinyl cpd. to the surface layer part of uncross-liked fluorine- contg. cation exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: As the above cation exchange membrane to be treated, a cation exchange membrance is used which is made of copolymer of CF2=CF2 and perfluoro (3,6-dioxa-4-methyl-7-octenesulfonyl fluoride), etc. The surface layer part of the membrane is coated with a partially polymerized material with a viscosity of 0,05W 50 P obtd. by copolymerizing a fluorine-contg. vinyl monomer having a cation exchange group, e.g. CF2=CFO-(CF2)5-OCF=CF2 with a fluorine-contg. polyvinyl cpd. The material is then thoroughly polymerized by irradiating the coated face with ultraviolet rays to form a cation exchange layer of a covalent bond type cross-linked structure on the surface layer part, thus obtaining a desired cation exchange membrane.
