Abstract

PURPOSE: In brine electrolysis using ion exchange membrane, returned brine including replenishment salt is made alkaline, the resulted precipitate is removed, and purification by ion exchange membrane is carried out. The process assures the removal of Ca ion and prevents the uprise of electrolysis voltage.
CONSTITUTION: In brine electrolysis using ion exchange membrane, returned brine is replenished with required NaCl and water, then added with caustic sode and soda ash, etc., to precipitate most of Ca, Mg, Fe and other heavy metals to be separated and removed. The filtrate is made alkaline, preferably with pH higher than 10, and passed through an ion exchange membrane having micro pores, then supplied into electrolytic bath. The microporous ion exchange membrane is, preferably a high molecular member having perfluorocarbon principal chain and effective exchange groups such as cationic exchange group of carboxylic or sulphonic groups as well as calcium chelate forming group such as imino diacetic acid group. These membrane had generally a permeability of 0.2m3/m2/hr or greater, or preferably 50m3/m2/hr or less, at a pressure of 1 m water head.
