Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp lighting apparatus, in which a parallel circuit of a capacitor and a diode and a parallel circuit of a semi-conductor switch and a diode, connected in series to each other, is connected in parallel to a discharge lamp, whereby it is enabled to reduce power consumption of the discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:During one half cycle of AC supply voltage, thyristor 31 is turned ON, and a filament pre-heating current is passed through a circuit of stabilizer 2, filament 1a, diode 5, thyristor 31 and filament 1b. During the other half cycle of the supply voltage, on the other hand, thyristor 31 is turned OFF and capacitor 4 is charged. During the next half cycle, thyristor 31 is turned ON, whereby a high voltage is impressed on the lamp 1 to light the same. After the lamp 1 is lighted, voltage applied between opposite terminals of the lamp is kept lower than the supply voltage, and thyristor 31 is kept OFF since Zener diode 32 is turned OFF. Therefore, discharge of capacitor 4 is stopped, so that power consumption of the lamp 1 is reduced.
