Abstract

1473506 Lids for, and closing, containers SIDAPLAX 20 Sept 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 47830/73 Heading B8C A lid, suitable for heat-sealing on to the rim or flange of a styrene polymer container, comprises a styrene polymer sheet that has been subjected to an electric discharge at least on that part of the surface of the lid that is to form a part, or the whole, of the seal. The invention includes also a process for producing a lidded container which comprises heat-sealing a sheet of styrene polymer as a lid to a rim or a flange, of a styrene polymer container wherein that part of the lid, rim, or flange that is to form a part, or a whole, of the seal is subjected to an electric discharge before sealing. As shown, a sheet of biaxially-oriented homopolystyrene 1 is passed from a roll 2 between smoothing rollers 3, 4 into a lidding machine 5, a series of filled open polystyrene trays, made by a vacuum forming process, also being fed, by a metal chain conveyer 6, to the machine 5, the flanges of the trays being subjected to corona discharge as they pass beneath an electrode 7 discharging to the chain conveyer. In a modification, Fig. 2, a lidding sheet 10 of biaxially-oriented homopolystyrene, before entering the machine 16, 17, is subjected to a corona discharge emitted from an electrode 14 and passing through the sheet 10 to a roller 15. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the flanges of the filled trays, made of biaxiallyoriented polystyrene, and the lidding sheet 20, made of biaxially oriented ABS sheet, are subjected to corona discharge at 27, 28, and 24, 25 respectively. The machine 5 can be of the turntable kind or, each holding container 17 can move intermittently, or continuously, past an upper assembly 16. The term styrene polymer is defined to comprise a homopolymerized styrene, a copolymerized styrene, a rubber modified polystyrene, or a rubber modified copolymer of styrene; and the term "container" is meant to include a wide range of receptacles suitable for packaging liquids, semisolids, and solid articles including drinks, foodstuffs, and dairy products. The lid sheet, of a thickness from 12À5 to 150 microns and usually referred to as a "film", can be made of unoriented, monoaxially, biaxially-oriented, or expanded, styrene polymer. The discharge applied to the sheet is normally of a high voltage, e.g. from 7,500 to 15,000 volts alternating at a frequency of from 1000 to 100,000 c.p.s. the discharge acting for 0À003 to 1 second. The discharge forms a layer of oxidized material between the lid and the rim, or flange, of the container which prevents a complete weld being formed. The lid of the container can bear printing and contain conventional additives.
