A highly selective (K<SP>+</SP> ) sensitive cell suitable for use in the presence of a large excess of (Na<SP>+</SP>), as in blood, comprises a "liquid membrane" formed by a solution in decane of a phospholipid e.g. lecithin, as a surface active agent with certain macrocyclic antibiotics, VIZ. VALINOMYCIN; NONACTIN, MONACTIN, DINACTIN, TRINACTIN, or a macrocyclic polyether known as DICYCLOHEXYL-18 CROWN 6. A suitable measuring cell is shown schematically in Fig. 1, using two standard "half cells", e.g. Calomel or silver-silver chloride, immersed in reference and sample solutions which are separated by the liquid membrane contained between two porous sheets, e.g. of 'cellophane'. The output voltage is measured by a potentiometric recorder. Constructional details of such a cell are illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), with modifications to take a continuously flowing sample Figs. 8 ... 11 (not shown). Alternatively the cell may be arranged as a "DIPSTICK CELL" Fig. 18 (not shown) having one half-cell, reference solution and membrane, which can be dipped into a beaker with a standard half-cell Fig. 19 (not shown) or used in a suitable "flow block" Figs. 14... 17 (not shown).
