Strain gauge
The present invention relates to engineering structures made of steel or concrete, such as bridges, buildings,
For strain gauges for ips, plants and the like, especially as strain sensing elements
The present invention relates to a strain gauge having an optical fiber.
Consisting of optical fiber, approximately 0.1 to 10 meters, especially 0.1
Strain gauges with a size of 1 meter are capable of straining large engineering structures.
Particularly useful for detecting and monitoring. However, for such purposes optical fiber
One important problem with using fibers is that the fiber is not damaged and
Costly and time consuming method of installing fiber on the surface of a closed structure
Supports the fiber on the structure so that it is affected by the strain in the structure without the need for
It is to be.
According to the present invention,
a) located or can be located on the surface of the structure and spaced from each other on a portion of the surface
A plurality of supports for optical fibers arranged at
b) at least wrapped around the support so as to be stretched between the supports
The length of a single optical fiber that is stretched between the supports is
An optical fiber fixed to the support so that it changes according to the strain on the surface of the structure
An optical fiber strain gauge for an engineering structure is provided.
In the strain gauge according to the present invention, the optical fiber is wound around the support many times.
Has advantages. This requires complex installation procedures such as metallization and welding
Without the need for one or more optical fibers to be affected by strain on the surface of the structure
Allows one or more optical fibers to be more easily held by the support
To In addition, the strain gauge according to the invention has a smaller dimension than the area of the structure to be monitored.
It has a significantly larger length of optical fiber. This increases design flexibility, for example
Area of monitored structure with dimensions smaller than the resolution of the device can be used for monitoring
It works.
Light passes in both directions along the section of optical fiber that is stretched between the supports.
As such, optical fibers typically include one or more reflectors. As mentioned above
E.g., the length of the fiber where light is transmitted along the fiber and reflected back to the detector
Changes are measured by the reflectometer method, which changes the time until light is detected at the detector.
The increase may be measured. Such detectors were formed in mirrors, fibers
Bragg gratings, or, in the broadest aspect of the invention, merely
It may be formed by the cleaved end of the fiber. Such devices include reflectors and existing
The advantage that any additional elements that can be installed can be located away from the support
If the monitored structure is affected by very high temperatures or
Wraps around that part of the optical fiber or around the support
Only each optical fiber that is fired needs to be located in that environment. Or optical fiber
BA is stretched between supports with sensitive reflectors to strain like Bragg gratings
Fiber portion. For example, for a Bragg grating, the grid spacing is
It changes according to the strain of the surface. As mentioned above, light with a broad wavelength spectrum
Can be launched into the optical fiber, and the wavelength of the reflected light depends on the surface distortion
It changes. Instead, a bra whose lattice spacing varies along its length
It may be appropriate to use a grating and emit monochromatic light into an optical fiber.
In this case, the position along the optical fiber where the grating spacing matches the wavelength of light is
It changes according to the strain, and the optical path length of the light changes accordingly.
The optical fiber may simply be wrapped around the support as a whole, or
May be wound on the individual support more than once. This is a low optical fiber
At least allows it to be held on the support mainly by friction, but with some additional
It may be appropriate to provide an adhesive form.
The optical fiber should be tightly wound around the support. However
In many cases, however, the fiber will be in an extended state even when the surface of the structure is not distorted.
Desirably, some tension is applied. In this way, between the supports
As the separation distance decreases, the strain gauge records the degree of compressive strain on the surface of the structure
It is possible to Normally, the optical fiber is 0.2 to 0.2 at zero structural strain.
Stretched to be 5% elongation.
The support for the fiber can be of any suitable type, but protrudes from the surface of the structure
It is desirable to have a protrusion around which the optical fiber is wound
. The support comes into contact with the optical fiber and causes microbending to damage the optical fiber
It is desirable to have no corners or edges that would cause loss. In addition, the support is macro
At least 30 mm to prevent loss of light from the fiber due to bending
It is desirable to have a curvature of the radius of the needle. The support is, for example, a cylinder of circular cross section
It may be formed as a protruding portion. However, in some situations, the protrusions may not be visible.
Have a decreasing lateral dimension in the direction projecting from the surface (perpendicular to the surface)
Preferably, for example, the protrusion may be frusto-conical
. Such a shape of the support may be such that if the fibers are covered as described below,
If placed in a capping element, the placement of the optical fiber on the support and its
It facilitates removal of the optical fiber from here. In addition, such supports may be
If the fiber is held in a loop, the fiber loop will face the surface of the structure.
Provides an easy way to stretch an optical fiber because it is pushed onto the support and stretched
I do.
In its simplest structural form, the strain gauge is an optical fiber that is integrally formed with the surface of the structure.
It has a support for fiber. However, always take the structure at a convenient time.
Preferably, the strain gauge is formed separately from the structure so that it can be attached. An example
For example, the support may be on a bottom plate that can be attached to the structure by welding or bolting.
May be arranged.
The optical fiber may be hand-wrapped around its support by hand, but construction
More rugged to withstand normal abuse expected in the field and during use
It is desirable to collectively accommodate optical fibers in the device. For this reason, optical fiber
It may be provided in a cover part located on the support. If the support is frustoconical
Or if tapered, the extent to which the lid component is pressed onto the support
Determine the extent to which the optical fiber is stretched when the bar is installed.
The strain gauge may include any suitable number of supports. If the strain gauge has two supports
With a carrier, the optical fiber is stretched in one direction between the supports, thus simply
Detects strain in only one direction. Strain generated by optical fiber in two directions on the surface
The strain gauge comprises three or more supports arranged on the surface as affected by
You may. For example, the support may be such that the optical fibers are on a part of the surface in a direction perpendicular to each other.
Arranged to form the vertices of a triangle, preferably a right triangle, to be stretched
Is done. For example, a strain gauge has four supports arranged at the corners of a rectangle,
It is possible to stretch the fiber between adjacent supports along a rectangular edge
. In this case, if one of the supports is separated from the surface of the structure, it will be adjacent
Will maintain a constant separation from the supporting substrate. Stretch along the edge of the rectangle
The optical fiber passed through and contacting the support is heated without being affected by the strain on the structure surface.
Can be used for degree compensation.
The strain gauge according to the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings by taking several shapes as examples.
Explain to:
Figure 1 is a partially cutaway perspective view of one shape of a strain gauge;
FIG. 2 is a schematic plan view of a second shape of the strain gauge, and
FIG. 3 is a schematic plan view of a third shape of the strain gauge.
Referring to the attached drawings, FIG. 1 shows a length that can be fixedly attached to a metal structure.
1 shows a strain gauge 1 having a square base plate 2 (for example, a strain gauge is
Can be welded to the structure along the edges 4 and 6, the point on the bottom plate 2
Track strain on structures. The pair of protrusions 8 and 10 stand up from the bottom plate 2.
It serves as a support for the optical fiber strain sensing element of the baring strain gauge 1. Protrusion
The sections 8 and 10 are provided to prevent optical loss of the optical fiber due to macro bending.
Each having a circular truncated conical shape with a circular cross section of a minimum diameter of 60 millimeters
And each is located in one end region of the bottom plate 2.
The strain gauge constitutes a strain sensing element and is guided away from the bottom plate 2 into the steel pipe 14.
Before being wound three times around the protrusion. Plain description
For simplicity, only three loops of optical fiber are shown, but in practice,
The fiber is wrapped around the protrusion several more times, for example fifty or one hundred times.
It is. Further, the thickness of the optical fiber is much smaller than shown in the figure. Optical fiber is an example
For example, it may have a coating of a polymer formed from an acrylic polymer,
About 125 micrometers (including the cover). Or the optical fiber is carbon coated
Or it may have a metallization, the metallization showing less creep, e.g.
Made of Luminium or Gold, giving the fiber a higher degree of protection, fiber diameter
And thus increase the number of optical fiber loops if desired.
And enable.
The projections 8 and 10 and the optical fiber 12 are also roughly rectangular in shape with the bottom plate 2.
Are housed in steel cover parts 16 of the same size. Projections 8 and 10 and
Apart from the fiber and the optical fiber 12, the interior of the cover part 16 is made of, for example, polyurethane,
Filled with acrylic polymer or equivalent potting compound 18
.
The strain sensor includes a bottom plate having protrusions, an optical fiber 12 and a potting member.
Manufactured as two parts of an assembly of the lid part 16 including the
Delivered to the construction site. The cover part of the strain gauge is the same as the protrusions 8 and 10.
Optical fiber around the shaper, or perhaps a mold with a very small diameter
The fiber 12 is wound as many times as necessary, and a cover is formed on the forming device and the optical fiber 12.
The potting compound 18 is filled with the product,
Manufactured by curing the setting compound. Potting
After the compound 18 has completely cured, the former is removed.
To attach the strain gauge, the bottom plate 2 is attached to the surface of the structure, for example by welding.
The cover assembly can reduce the optical fiber 12 by a small amount, e.g.
. 5%, pressed sufficiently over two protrusions 8 and 10 to stretch
. The appropriateness of the extension of the optical fiber 12 is determined by, for example, one of the bottom plate or the cover part assembly.
Is secured by providing a stopper on the
Push over the protrusion by hammering in until it is stopped by the hopper
Put on. The cover part 16 is fixed by the screw 20 received by the screw hole 22 of the protrusion.
Held on the bottom plate
In use, the length of the optical fiber varies depending on the separation of the protrusions 8 and 10,
The total length of the fiber changes by 2n times the separation of the protrusions, where n is the optical fiber
It is the number of times that it is wound around the protrusion. Potting compound 18
Proper selection of the coating material for the optical fiber 12 and the
Prevent or at least significantly reduce slippage of the fiber around the part
Will. Strain in structures is monitored by one of the following methods:
1) A pair of reflections, such as a Bragg grating, on the part of the optical fiber away from the strain gauge
Using a reflectometer method to monitor changes in the total length of the optical fiber
;
2) By providing a Bragg grating in the optical fiber portion affected by elongation,
Monitor changes in the wavelength of light reflected by the child; or
3) Monitor changes in fiber-specific properties such as propagation constants.
Figure 2 can monitor distortion in two orthogonal directions A and B as shown
An outline of a second shape of the strain gauge according to the present invention is shown. This strain gauge is the one shown in FIG.
And has a bottom plate 2 and three projections 8, 9 and 10;
The projection 9 is at an angle of 90 degrees. Two separate optical fibers 12 and 12
′ Means that each optical fiber is predominantly parallel to one of directions A or B and predominantly in the other direction.
Wrap around protrusions 8 and 9 and protrusions 9 and 10 respectively so that they lie at right angles
Have been.
FIG. 3 shows a temperature-compensated book that can monitor strain in two orthogonal directions.
3 shows an outline of a third shape of the strain gauge according to the invention. This strain gauge is also shown in FIG.
The same general structure as that described above, but with four projections 8, 9, 10 and 11
The bottom plate 2 has a generally square bottom plate 2 with one protrusion each in the area of each corner of the bottom plate 2.
Having a part. The four optical fibers 12, 12 ', 13 and 13' are generally each
A pair of adjacent protrusions is provided so that the optical fiber is stretched along one side of the bottom plate.
Wound around, optical fibers 12 and 13 are optical fibers 12 'and 1
Like 3 ', they are arranged along parallel sides on both sides. Bottom plate, two of bottom plate 2
A weld 20 extending along adjacent sides 21 and 22 provides
Welded to the surface, but along other adjacent sides 23 and 24
No (however, if desired, the weld 20 is within the area of the protrusions 9 and 11)
Can extend along some of the sides 23 and 24). In this way, the projections 8, 9
And 11 are fixed to the surface of the structure, and the protrusion 10 is separated from the surface and
Except for the above, a constant distance from the protrusions 9 and 11 is maintained. Optical fiber 12
And 12 'are thus strain sensing elements in directions A and B, respectively.
Operate with optical fibers 13 and 13 'used to compensate for temperature effects
Can be.
