着色鏡用樹脂裏当て及び鏡 発明の分野
本発明は、鏡上のもののような薄い金属被膜を腐食分解から保護することが可
能な、改良された親水性の安定塗料に関する。さらに詳細には、本発明は、水性
または非水性媒体中の有機樹脂ポリマーと、可溶性塩及び汚染物を含まない酸化
防止性捕捉剤顔料との組み合わせからなる鏡裏当て用改良塗料に関する。鏡用水
性塗料(ペイント)は、本発明の開発まで得られなかった。したがって、本発明
は、鏡裏当てとして、水性塗料またはペイントを提供するものである。発明の背景
鏡は、800Å〜1,500Åの厚さの種々の金属、好ましくは銀及び銅の被
膜を、湿式化学メッキ法または真空蒸着法によって、ガラスまたはポリカーボネ
ート等のプラスチックの適切な基体上に連続的に付与し、引き続き、鏡裏当てと
して一般に知られているペイント塗装を行うことによって製造される。
金属層は、三つの一般的方法、1)電気メッキ、2)化学的析出及び3)電気
化学的(ガルバニック)析出の内の一つによって、ガラス基体に付与される。電
気化学的析出が現下のより抜きの方法であり、現在広く用いられている。一般に
、銀層を付与し、そして銀層上に銅層を析出させる。銅層は、銀層に裏当てを良
好に接着させるために重要である。本発明は、電気化学的析出系を使用する。
「裏当て」塗料によって保護された場合でさえ、家庭環境に存在する水分、大
気中の汚染物質、塩、硫化水素、アンモニア、及び塩化物類に暴露された場合に
、鏡上の反射性銀層は、腐食分解に極めて敏感であることが知られている。スチ
ールまたはアルミニウム上の保護下塗り中に、腐食防止剤として一般に付与され
る硫酸亜鉛またはジカルボン酸の亜鉛塩が、予期に反して、鏡裏当て塗料中で十
分に作用せず、また、実際に銀層に腐食作用を及ぼすことも知られている。
有機樹脂と顔料との混合物からなる塗料を含む種々の鏡裏当て塗料が、従来技
術によって提案されている。例えば、エバンス等の米国特許第4,707,40
5号は、有機被膜形成樹脂及び非鉛金属のシアナミド塩とからなる鏡裏当て塗料
を開示している。このシアナミド塩は、カルシウム、亜鉛またはマグネシウム等
のIIA族またはIIB族金属の塩であり、好ましい塩は、カルシウムシアナミドで
あるといっている。カルシウム及びマグネシウムシアナミドは、塗料系の有機物
質の硬化プロセスに有害に支障をきたす水溶性で、高アルカリ性「非顔料」物で
あるので、これらは、共に成功しなかったと思われる。さらに、これらは、銀に
対し最低の腐食防止活性しか示さない。これは、代表的な工業銘柄のカルシウム
シアナミド類が、不純物としてかなりの量の可溶性硫化物(例えば、1%のCa
S2)を含んでいることから予測される。したがって、従来知られていた亜鉛シ
アナミド類は、商業的に受け入れられなかった。
原米国特許出願第07/754,898号及び第07/902,206号にお
いて、非鉛顔料を用いる優れた耐食止性鏡裏当てを提供する発明が記載されてい
る。
本発明は、新規の樹脂配合物を利用する、鏡銀反射層の優れた長
期耐食保護を可能とする鏡裏当て用の改良ペイント、または塗料配合物を提供す
るものである。発明の概要
したがって、本発明の目的は、銀及び銅などの薄い金属被膜を腐食分解から保
護する、改良ペイントまたは塗料を提供することにある。
本発明の他の目的は、シアナミド系酸化防止性顔料を含む水性塗料からなり、
加水分解安定性を示しながら、薄い金属被膜を化学分解から保護することができ
る、改良した鏡裏当て用ペイント塗料を提供することにある。
本発明のさらに他の目的は、酸化防止性顔料と共に効果的な耐食性鏡裏当てを
提供する新規の樹脂裏当てを提供することにある。
本発明の他の目的及び効果は、説明を展開して行くに従って明瞭になるであろ
う。
上記目的及び効果を達成するために、本発明は、水性または非水性媒体中に含
有された樹脂ポリマーと、1種またはそれ以上の精製したシアナミド系酸化防止
性捕捉剤顔料との組み合わせからなる保護鏡裏当て配合物を提供する。一実施態
様において、顔料は、本質的に塩を含まず、また、本質的に汚染物を含んでいな
い。可溶性酸化防止性捕捉剤であるシアナミド顔料は、鉛、亜鉛、ニッケル、コ
バルト等の金属に基づくものであってよく、特にこれらの金属のいずれかと、シ
アナミド類及びジシアナミド類との錯体を含む。
また、本発明は、鏡等のガラスまたはプラスチック製品の裏側に含まれる薄い
金属被膜を保護する方法であって、水性または非水性媒体中に含有された樹脂ポ
リマーと、本質的に塩及び汚染物を含ま
ない金属シアナミド顔料等の1種またはそれ以上の可溶性シアナミド系酸化防止
性捕捉剤顔料との組み合わせからなる改良ペイント、または塗料をそこに付与す
ることを特徴とする方法を提供する。好ましい実施態様の説明
本発明の一態様によれば、その上に保護被膜を含む鏡の金属(例えば、銀)反
射層が、被覆系の顔料成分に通常伴う微量の可溶塩汚染物の存在に対して、顕著
な不寛容性を有することを見出した。このことは、水性媒体中でイオン種の解離
を生じうる顔料で、特に問題である。微量のこれらの可溶性塩汚染物の存在が、
鏡裏当て用途におけるある種の市販の顔料銘柄品の劣った腐食防止性能に対して
責任があることを見出した。
本発明の別の実施態様によれば、その上に保護被膜を含む鏡の金属(例えば、
銀)反射層が、金属含有シアナミド系酸化防止性顔料と共に優れた非腐食性鏡裏
当てを提供するメラミン系樹脂配合物を使用することによって、実質的に改良さ
れることを見出した。
従来技術において、公知の製造手順は、窒素下または減圧して、最初は135
〜200℃で酸化亜鉛を過剰の尿素またはジ−シアナミドで処理し、それから6
00〜800℃で2時間か焼することによって、亜鉛シアナミド等の顔料を提供
している。このエネルギー集中法の欠点は、低い比表面積及び多孔度を特徴とす
る比較的「密な」組織の、したがって、反応性の低下した生成物を生じることで
ある。か焼によって生成した亜鉛シアナミドは、鏡裏当て系に必要な高度の腐食
防止活性を示さないので、鏡に適用するための「顔料」銘柄品と考えることはで
きない。
可溶性亜鉛塩を、水素シアナミドの水溶性の通常はアルカリの塩
と、以下に示すように反応させる、沈殿によって亜鉛シアナミドを製造する湿式
製造法も知られている(米国特許第1,948,106号及び3,039,84
8号)。

反応の可溶性副生物が系に出現することは、これらの手順の大きな不利である
。それらを排除するために、高価な洗浄を必要とし、それによって、大量の包含
廃水を生じる。より重要なことは、可溶性塩汚染物の完全な排除は、一般に不可
能であるので、そのような手順によって製造された顔料銘柄の亜鉛シアナミドの
品質が、微量の一般に腐食促進剤である可溶性副生物の存在によって、影響され
ることである。
溶解したカルシウムシアナミドをH2SO4またはCO2と反応させて水素シア
ナミドの水溶液を最初に製造し、その後、中間生成物を20℃で1〜12時間、
酸化亜鉛スラリーと反応させることによって、塩基性モノ−亜鉛シアナミドを製
造することができることも、英国特許第905,959(1962)号及びソビ
エト特許第327,783号から知られている。この反応は、次の通り進行する

生成物を濾過、乾燥した後、この生成物は、典型的に83〜85%の亜鉛シア
ナミド、13〜15%の酸化亜鉛及び2%の水を含んでいる。この製造法の欠点
の一つが、水素シアナミドを製造する工程に関連して考えられる。その結果とし
て、最終生成物が、かなりの量の炭酸及び硫酸を可溶性の形で含有する。カルシ
ウムシアナミドを製造する方法の通常の原料である工業銘柄の炭化カルシウムの
1〜2%に相当する硫黄含有不純物が、水素シアナミド中に可溶性硫化物種が出
現することに対して責任がある。明白な理由で、この
方法によって製造した顔料銘柄の亜鉛シアナミドは、鏡裏当て配合物中への適用
性がかなり制限される。
本発明によって、水性または非水性鏡裏当て塗料を実現させる未精製、並びに
塩及び汚染物を含んでいない顔料が提供される。これらの塗料は、顕著な耐食及
び耐久特性を有しており、長期にわたる保護に有用である。従来、水溶性塩は、
親水性不安定及び金属薄膜との不相容性を引き起こして、化学的分解及び破損を
生じたであろう。本発明の未精製の及び精製した、例えば、塩及び汚染物を含ん
でいない酸化防止性シアナミド顔料塗料と共に、新規の樹脂配合物を使用するこ
とによって、塗料と基体との化学結合に関し、さらなる性能特徴が提供される。
本明細書において、「塩を含まない」という表現は、顔料が、薄い銀/銅金属
被膜等と不相容性の水溶性塩及び不純物(汚染物)を約0.5重量%以下で含ん
でいることを意味する。「酸化防止性」は、顔料または顔料類が基体または金属
層の酸化を防止し、かつ被膜のけん化を防止することを意味する。「捕捉剤」は
、腐食工程中に生成または存在する遊離硫黄及び塩素イオンを中和する能力を効
果的に発揮する顔料または顔料類のことを意味する。
顔料は、ペイント及び塗料系、特に保護塗料中の腐食防止成分として機能する
ために有していなければならない種々の物理的及び化学的特性がある。例えば、
顔料は、水性または非水性のいずれかの有機媒体に対する分散性、比較的低い吸
油性、低い水溶性、水溶性塩または無機汚染物の不存在下に中性または僅かにア
ルカリ性での加水分解性、及びより重大には、保護表面に生じる特定の腐食促進
電気−化学工程と相互作用して、それを規定する能力を有していなければならな
い。顔料銘柄品のこの能力は、その化学的組成構造に
由来する。しかし、保護塗料中に現れるその腐食阻止活性は、その水溶性によっ
て決定されるに違いない。
可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んでいない酸化防止性捕捉剤顔料は、その最適な水溶
性及び加水分解pHのために、鏡裏当て塗料中におけるような保護塗料の腐食防
止成分として機能する。しかしながら、顔料の腐食促進工程との相互作用の間に
可溶化によって生じる生成物のその硫化水素捕捉剤能力、より具体的には、シア
ナミド成分の酸化防止性における特性が、与えられる保護活性に対して責任があ
ると仮定することは理にかなっている。
本発明の一態様によれば、長期間にわたって耐久性及び良好な外観を示す鏡裏
当て組成物の製造を可能とする、可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んでいない顔料が提供
される。本発明によれば、鏡裏当て用の優れた品質の顔料である可溶性塩、及び
汚染物を含んでいない金属シアナミド顔料懸濁液が提供される。
本発明の別の態様において、米国特許第4,707,405号、米国特許第1
,948,106号、米国特許第3,039,848号、英国特許第905,9
59号、及びソビエト特許第327,783号に開示されているシアナミド顔料
等の精製されていないか、または塩を含んでいなくはない金属シアナミド顔料類
を使用することができる。本発明の新規の樹脂配合物は、優れた腐食防止性を有
する鏡裏当て用顔料として、いかなる金属シアナミド顔料も有効に使用すること
を可能とする。
金属シアナミド類は、塩基性シアナミド塩でも、また、1つまたは2つあるい
はそれ以上の金属を組み合わせて含む錯塩でもよく、また、混合物またはブレン
ドでもよい。金属は、周期律表のIIA及びIIB族のいずれの金属でもよいが、鉛
、亜鉛、ニッケル、コバルト、
またはそれらの混合物であるのが好ましい。
特に好ましい物質は、水素シアナミドと錯体を形成した2つの金属分子を含有
するシアナミドの錯塩であり、中性モノ−亜鉛シアナミド、ニッケルビス−シア
ナミド、コバルトビス−シアナミド、亜鉛ニッケル−ジシアナミド、亜鉛コバル
ト−ジシアナミド及びそれらの混合物、並びに同等の物質がある。
中性モノ−亜鉛シアナミドは、次の通り表わされる:

この種の塩及び汚染物を含んでいない顔料は、米国ウイスコンシン州ミルウォ
ーキーのウエイン・ピグメント社から本発明で使用するために入手した。また、
これらは市販されている。

本発明の鏡裏当て用組成物は、水溶性(水性)または溶剤溶解性(非水性)の
いずれかである有機被膜形成樹脂からなる。有機被膜形成樹脂は、薄い金属被膜
に対し相容性であり、かつ被膜の劣化及び変色を促進しないものであるべきであ
る。例えば、樹脂は、金属に対して反応性である官能基を含むべきではない。好
ましい有機被膜形成樹脂は、さらに、アクリル変性アルキド樹脂、ポリウレタン
油、ハロゲン化ビニル重合体または共重合体、エポキシ樹脂、尿素樹脂、非油系
ウレタン、フェノール−ホルムアルデヒド樹脂を含みうるアルキド樹脂またはア
クリル樹脂に基づくものである。金属シアナミド顔料が、本質的に塩及び汚染物
を含んでいないものではない場合、被膜形成樹脂は、架橋のためにメラミン樹脂
を含んでいなければならない。得られた樹脂は、自然乾燥、焼成によって硬化可
能であるか、あるいは紫外線硬化性であり、また、可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んで
いない酸化防止性顔料と相容性である他のいずれかの樹脂である。水性樹脂用の
適切な溶剤には、種々のグリコールエーテル類、アルキルアルコール類及び他の
水混和性溶剤があり、それ
らは全て当業界で知られている。
本発明の特別な特徴は、ここに記載したように、鏡用の水性塗料を提供するこ
とにある。出願人の知るところでは、そのような鏡用水性塗料は、これまでに知
られていなかった。
非水性系において、各成分は、以下の量で存在すべきである。

シアナミド酸化防止性顔料が、顔料固形分に基づいて、組成物の約3〜約65
重量%、好ましく約7〜30重量%の量で、樹脂塗料中に含有されているのが好
ましい。また、顔料が、約0.25ミクロン未満の粒径であるのも好ましい。
また、組成物は、乾燥剤、流動性調整助剤、沈降防止剤、分散助剤等の他の成
分または添加物、及びそれらの混合物を含んでいてもよい。
このような顔料に特に好ましい塗料配合物は、メラミン樹脂と共に特別に配合
したアルキド樹脂またはアクリル樹脂の混合物と、溶剤、添加剤、及び顔料との
混合物からなる。他の成分と組合せたアルキド樹脂またはアクリル樹脂とメラミ
ンとの混合物は、0.5%
を越える可溶性塩を含んでいる顔料を含むいかなる顔料と共に、鏡裏当てとして
優れた非腐食特性を与える樹脂配合物を提供することが、本発明によって見出さ
れた。樹脂配合物の成分が、混合物中で架橋を形成して、鏡の非常に硬い裏当て
を形成するのは明らかである。この樹脂裏当ての硬さが、通常、大抵の樹脂裏当
てに遭遇する腐食作用を妨害する。したがって、この樹脂配合物は、いかなる金
属シアナミド酸化防止性顔料と共に使用することができる。
好ましい樹脂配合物は、次の量を含んでいる:

この配合物は、当業界に公知のように、通常、充填剤及び増量剤と共に使用さ

アルキド樹脂は、脱水ひまし油、あまに油、フェノール樹脂、グリセリン、無
水フタル酸、及び芳香族溶剤の混合物である変性アルキド樹脂組成物であるのが
好ましい。
アクリル樹脂は、当業界で知られているように、いかなるアクリル酸、メタク
リル酸、エステル、またはそれらの混合物である。好ましいアクリル樹脂系は、
ドック・レジンズ社からTA55−2の商品名で得ることができる。
この種の特に好ましい配合物は、次の通りである:

塗料を使用するための本発明の方法は、本発明の組成物を薄い金属被膜好まし
くは鏡等のガラス基体上のそのような被膜に付与することからなる。本発明の組
成物は、塗布、ロール塗布、カーテン塗布、または噴霧等のいかなる通常の方法
によっても、薄い金属被膜に付与することができる。組成物は、約0.5ミル〜
約3.5ミルの厚さで薄い金属被膜に付与するのが好ましい。組成物は、単なる
自然乾燥、強制加熱乾燥または焼成によって鏡上で硬化される。
以下に実施例を挙げて、本発明を説明するが、本発明は、それらに限定される
と考えるべきではない。実施例において、部は、別に指示しない限り重量基準で
ある。実施例I

:
以下に記載するように、ウエイン・ピグメンド社から得た可溶性塩、及び汚染
物を含んでいないシアナミド顔料を以下の各表に列挙した樹脂または樹脂類と混
合することによって、鏡裏当て用ペイント配合物を製造する。最初の鏡裏当て用
塗料配合物分散物を、6+nsヘグマン(Hegman)まで粉砕して、室温で一晩放
置する。非水性物質を溶剤(キシレン)で希釈し、そして、水性物質を脱イオン
(D.I.)水で希釈して、3番G.E.ツァーンカップ(Zahn Cup)によっ
て35秒の付与粘度にし、次に、3ミルのバード引き落とし棒(Bird draw down
path bar)を用いて、予め金属(銀/銅)メッキした12×12インチ×1/4
インチのガラス板上に引き落として、室温で2分間フラッシュ乾燥させる。次に
、被膜を350°Fで4分間焼成して、1.5ミルの乾燥被膜を得る。次に、鏡
を24時間熟成し、その後、4辺全てから各3インチを切除し、6×6インチの
試験用パネルを得る。次に、この切断パネルを45度の角度で塩噴霧室に入れ、
湿度100%で95°Fの20%塩溶液に暴露し、暴露150時間ごとに合計3
00時間評価した。パネルの縁を縁クリープ(金属分解/変色)について評価し
、ミリメートルで表示する。鏡の面もフィールドスポッティング(field spotti
ng)、ピンホール、曇り、及び金属分解について評価する。
以下の表は、本発明の鏡裏当て用組成物として、水性及び非水性ペイント/塗
料配合物の両方を示すものである。実施例1

表1Aの非水系鏡裏当て系を、20%塩に150〜300時間それぞれ噴霧暴
露した後評価した。可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んでいない酸化防止性顔料は、銀/
銅層の腐食に対する阻害剤としてうまく作用し、最終的に金属の分解を防いだ。
表1Bの水系鏡裏当て組成物を、20%塩に150〜300時間それぞれ噴霧
暴露した後、評価した。可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んでいない酸化防止性顔料は、
銀/銅層の腐食に対する阻害剤として作用し、金属の腐食分解を防ぐことになっ
た。可溶性塩及び汚染物を含んでいない顔料の水溶性及び相容性のために、水性
状態での銀及び銅金属の湿式化学メッキに関して、さらなる性能特徴が認められ
た。金属付与工程におけるように、代わりにアミンを利用して、塗料が金属に「
食い込む」ことを可能とする水性メッキの応用は、水
性塗料の理想的な条件を提供する。したがって、全組成に基づいて9%までの高
濃度の亜鉛シアナミドを含有する組成物が、良好な耐食保護をすることになる。
さらに、亜鉛シアナミドを2〜50%の濃度でニッケルビス−シアナミド、コバ
ルトビス−シアナミドまたは鉛シアナミドでドープする場合、この顔料系の腐食
妨害性能が高められ、相乗効果が得られた。実施例III
