Metal may be used. The metal matrix composite is used in environments where resonant vibrations are present
Having. This material resolves unwanted resonant vibrations.
Background art
Currently, there are many devices that generate unpleasant noise. This unpleasant noise is two parts
It results from some kind of friction or rubbing contact between the material or two separate structures. this
Friction and rubbing contact can, for example, be transmitted to one or more other parts that come into contact with noise-generating parts.
Transmitted by violent vibrations, and one or more of them also produces unpleasant noise.

For example, in the case of a disc-type brake rotor, it is uncomfortable
It is well known that it generates a noisy noise. These unpleasant noises are generally

When propagated, unpleasant sounds will be greatly amplified.
A similar situation exists for drum rotors where the friction material contacts the brake drum.

In some cases, this can result in unpleasant noise propagation.
Similarly, in virtually every situation where moving parts come into contact with each other, undesirable resonant vibrations can occur.

All of these device parts are also an object of the present invention.

An important aspect of the invention is the prediction of unique behavior in certain composite materials.
This is an unexpected discovery. Specifically, a composite material having a matrix metal and another type of reinforcement

It was unexpectedly found that it behaves as a material. For example, granular reinforcement

Conceivable.
There are currently a number of techniques for making metal matrix composites. these
Much of the technology is based on the desired body of granular reinforcement present in the matrix metal of the composite.
It is believed that this can result in a product ratio. Here, sheet, fiber or whisker
For other reinforcements such as these, they are relatively low when mixed with the desired matrix
It should be understood that volume percent can provide the desired noise attenuation effect. here,
Two particularly preferred methods for making metal matrix composites are
PRIMEX ™ non-pressurized metal described in numerous patents filed by Side Technology
A process known as the infiltration process, and also
Self-generated vacuum processes described in numerous patents. These different kinds of patented
Process is a high-fill metal matrix composite with desirable mechanical properties
It allows the components of the fee to be created simply and economically.
The damping behavior of various metal matrix composites depends on the volume% of reinforcement.
It has been unexpectedly found that it changes dramatically with increasing. Identification shown in Figure 1
Referring to the example, the reinforcement is granular silicon carbide and the matrix metal is aluminum
The damping behavior of a metal matrix composite containing is shown. The composite shown in FIG.
The method used to measure the damping behavior of the specimen uses the bending resonance frequency zener bandwidth method.

The mixture is a mixture of 220 grit and 500 grit. Also, the aluminum matrix
Metals are aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloys. Examine Figure 1
Depending on the increase or damping of the internal friction, the volume percent of the particulate silicon carbide reinforcement is about 50%.
When the volume ratio reaches 60% by volume, the effect starts to increase.
It turns out that it is. As shown in Fig. 1, when the content of the reinforcing material increases, the internal friction also increases at first.
And then drop slightly to a silicon carbide content of about 50% by volume.
It can be seen that the rate increases sharply as the rate further increases. The cause of this behavior is not enough
Although not elucidated and not intended to be bound by any particular theory or explanation, this behavior is secondary.
Attributable to two competing effects. First, most of the damping is
The low volume fraction of the deformable metal matrix provided by Rix
It is expected that attenuation will steadily decrease when lowered. Ceramic such as silicon carbide
Many of the racks are known to be lower damping materials than metals. Therefore
This effect occurs when the silicon carbide content increases from about 10% to about 50% by volume.
Can result in reduced attenuation. On the other hand, the addition of reinforcement adds a considerable amount to the microstructure.
May result in disruption. The addition of ceramic reinforcement causes (1) damping at the boundary.
Between the particles and the matrix
Generated, (2) dislocations that can dissipate vibrational energy due to thermal expansion coefficient mismatch
And / or (3) an improvement in the grain size of the matrix is
To increase metal attenuation in various ways, such as
And Although these effects are not fully understood, the overall attenuation
It is clear that significant improvements will occur.
Thus, from the data of FIG. 1, the aluminum matrix metal and silicon carbide

Particularly suitable combinations of materials, especially for brake caliper pistons
Is a highly corrosion resistant aluminum alloy and aluminum oxide granular reinforcement.
This particular material combination provides a material with very high modulus and very low thermal conductivity
And the material achieves a very favorable noise damping effect. Alminium
The environment in which the system is used may not be important for corrosion resistance.
Although the invention has been described in detail with respect to particular embodiments, it will be appreciated that the noise attenuation
It will be possible for those skilled in the art to make various changes. Therefore, those changes
Any further modifications should be included in the scope of the claims.
