Multi-slice excitation pulse sequence
In nuclear magnetic resonance tomography, keeping the measurement time as short as possible is generally
Purpose. For that purpose, for example, a "fast" pulse sequence is used
In a high-speed pulse sequence, the repetition time of the pulse sequence
Short so that the dynamic equilibrium is adjusted. A typical example of this form is the so-called "
FISP "sequence, described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,769,603.
I have.
Another attempt to reduce the measurement time when acquiring data from multiple slices is the first slice.
Excite at least one other slice within the repetition time of the sequence of slices
It is in. At that time, the repetition time of one sequence depends on the excitation of the nuclear magnetic resonance signal.
The fact that the time between readouts is usually significantly longer than the so-called echo time
Used. At that time, the data acquisition time in one slice is
The time between subsequent excitations is used to excite adjacent slices and scan there.
Used. Such multi-slice technologies are, for example, L.E.
146, p. 123 (1983). However, when does this multi-slice technology
But it cannot be used, for example, the repetition time TR
Is very short and near the minimum possible value for imaging from a single slice
Cannot be used. This means, for example, that fast gradient echo sequencing
This is true in the case of
e 6, pp. 364-371 (1988), with excitation pulses having a multifrequency excitation spectrum.
Therefore, it has been proposed to simultaneously excite a plurality of slices. At that time,
Only one echo occurs at a time in all the sources. But different slices
Since these signals have different phases, it is difficult to separate these signals.
It is possible. However, with this device, at least to inspect each slice
It requires a large number of measurements, and consequently no measurement time advantage is obtained.
The multi-slice method is further described in the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging,
1, page 531-538, IE Bishop et al. However, this method does not
It is susceptible to non-uniformity and magnetic permeability. High-frequency pulses shall be separate individual pulses
It is formed.
The measuring time is particularly critical in so-called single point imaging methods.
This is described, for example, in SMRM Abstracts 1993, page 1215. That
Various methods allow for image formation with non-uniform magnetic fields, with readout
The gradient has been replaced by a phase encoding test. But that

, Only one point per scan is obtained in k-space, so that for one slice
For a repetition time TR of a square raw data matrix of size N, N ×
It takes N × TR measurement time. For multiple slices, the measurement time may be longer
It becomes.
An object of the present invention is to reduce measurement time when acquiring data from a plurality of slices.
And there.
According to the present invention, this object is achieved by each of the requirements of claim 1.
In one alternative configuration, this is solved by the features of claim 5. Slightly
Within a scan that can be shifted, multiple excitations or multiple
The caching clearly reduces the measurement time. Each echo signal is
Each echo signal can be separated without any problem because they occur at different times.
. The advantage in measurement time is that the “single point” imaging suitable for inhomogeneous magnetic fields
In this case, it is particularly significant. Compared to normal multi-slice technology,
The advantage of obtaining a very large measurement time is that the echo time TE (excitation and the corresponding
(Time between the time and the time) is larger than TR. Excitation and reform
Since each slice gradient intensity is the same during cutting, each selected slice
Have the same curvature, so that the method employs each base field inhomogeneity and
It is relatively unaffected by each permeability.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the respective dependent claims.
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. At that time, the drawing

The nuclear spin is excited using the irradiated first high-frequency pulse RF1. high frequency
A plurality of pulses RF1 are irradiated under the action of each slice selection gradient GS1.
It is formed from the sum of selected individual high-frequency pulses. Individual high-frequency pulses

, Since the frequencies are shifted accordingly, each individual high-frequency pulse
Excite the slice.
As shown in FIG. 2, the positive portion GS1 of the slice selection gradient GS
After excitation to rephasing the nuclear spins dephased by
, The slice selection gradient GS is inverted (GS2). This gradient
Works in the same way as the pulse GS2, but after the second high-frequency pulse RF2, in the positive direction.
A gradient pulse in the same amplitude time plane acts.
In the very next period, the nuclear spins will drop relative to each other, as shown in FIGS.
In two direct directions, each phase encoding gradient GS1 and GS2
Is phase encoded. Each phase encoding gradient is
, Step by step, as indicated by the subdivision lines and arrows in FIGS.
In this way, switching can be continued.
In the very next period, the nuclear spin is re-formed by the second radio-frequency pulse RF2.
It is cashing. Therefore, the flip angle of the second high-frequency pulse RF2 is
In this embodiment, it is 180 °. The second high-frequency pulse RF2 also has n selective pulses.
It is formed from the sum of the individual high-frequency pulses, and each individual high-frequency pulse
It is irradiated under the action of the chair selection gradient GS3 and has a time shift τ.
ing. With a corresponding choice of the frequency spectrum of each individual pulse,
Each slice is again individually refocused.
Both high frequency pulses RF1 and RF2 are formed by additive superposition of each individual pulse
Have been.
By the refocusing, a nuclear magnetic resonance signal is formed within the readout period n.
The nuclear magnetic resonance signal has the same interval as each individual high-frequency pulse in the excitation pulse RF1.
occurs at τ. Therefore, each signal from each slice must be individually identified
Can be.
Each individual echo signal S needs to be rephased in the slice selection direction.
Yes, that is, the gradient signal must be 0 in the slice selection direction.
It is necessary. For this purpose, a rephasing pulse G is applied between each individual signal S.
SR is applied in the slice selection direction, and this rephasing pulse GSR is
Are selected so that the gradient integral value of the becomes zero. This rephasing path
Due to Lus GSR and the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field acting during this time, nuclear spins
Is rephased in the slice read each time, but each adjacent slice
Is dephased, so that only the signal from one slice is
Measured.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 5, the phase encoding gradients GP1 and GP2
The phase encoding takes place in two directions, but
No gradient is applied. In the usual way, the nuclear magnetic field under the readout gradient
Reading out the resonance signal
Thus, in the value domain in k-space, or in other expressions, one row data matrix
Here, only one individual point is measured in k-space while a complete row in
Is done. Therefore, this image forming method is also called a “single point” method.
. By eliminating each readout gradient, each readout gradient can be
In the direction, distortion due to inhomogeneity of the magnetic field can be avoided. Each readout gradient
Depending on the entry, in the ideal case, the position x in the frequency encoding direction and the nuclear scan
A linear relationship between the corresponding resonance frequency of the pin should be achieved. However
Due to the inhomogeneity of each magnetic field, this relationship becomes non-linear. this is,
A linear readout gradient is superimposed on a gradient showing the inhomogeneity of the base magnetic field.
Due to being folded.
On the other hand, depending on the magnetic field inhomogeneity in the phase encoding direction,
Under the assumption that the magnetic field during the delivery period is constant, no distortion occurs. When
This means that in this case, mainly, each successive phase encoding step
This is because the signal difference between the taps is important.
The main disadvantage of the single point method, which is suitable for inhomogeneous magnetic fields, is the long measurement time
Is attributed to This is because, as mentioned, only one point per scan is in k-space.
It is not measured within. On the other hand, inhomogeneous magnetic fields
Pulse sequence is important because the requirement for magnetic field inhomogeneity is small.
In other cases, the magnetic field device can be made extremely inexpensive and compact.
It is. Furthermore, such magnetic field devices can have an "open" construction type
That is, for patients, for example, for MR applications for intervention, the approach
And comfort for the patient is improved. Special applications, such as MR-
Such a magnetic field device is also well suited for mammography.
According to the pulse sequence described with reference to FIGS.
The measurement time for data acquisition can be significantly reduced. To say that
This makes it possible to measure each k-space point from multiple slices within one scan.
Because it can be. For each slice, one data point still remains
Is not measured. Between each individual pulse of the high frequency pulses RF1 and RF2 and
The time lag τ between each echo signal S is mainly due to the fact that each echo signal S
It is specified so that it is in a state where it can be separated. The read interval is exactly
Very short for each erroneous readout gradient for the single point method
Therefore, the echo signal S is also very short, and the time shift τ can be shortened.
The more the non-uniformity of the base magnetic field, the smaller the time shift τ should be
Can be. To say
This is because the co signal decays relatively quickly. Linear magnetic field inhomogeneity BinhomTo
Then the following equation holds:
τ ≧ 4π / γBinhom= τmin
At this time, if the main maximum values do not overlap, the two echo signals can be separated.
And
For example: Binhom= GS・ DS
(GS= Slice gradient, dS= Slice thickness)
The time lag between the two slices can be arbitrarily selected (τ ≧ τminIn
It is not necessary to be constant for all slice intervals.
Naturally, use fast pulse sequences to achieve short measurement times
It is also important. At that time, the equilibrium state of the magnetization is adjusted. Either way, for that
After each scan, the nuclear spin phase encoding is reset again
Need to be This means that after reading out the nuclear magnetic resonance signal S,
This is achieved by the coding gradients GP1 'and GP2'. Each
First phase encoding gradients GP1 and GP2 and their respective phases
Between the gradients GP1 'and GP2', respectively.
Since the 180 ° high frequency pulse is located, each phase encoding gradient
And each rephasing gradient have the same polarity but work in the opposite direction.
Use, and thus seeing about scans, cancel each other out.
Regarding the shape of the magnetic field, instead of making it completely uniform in all spatial directions,
In some cases, it may be more effective to set a state where there is a predetermined magnetic field inhomogeneity. 1 sky
In the middle direction, such a state where the magnetic field is inhomogeneous has a permanent gradient.
Corresponding. As shown in FIG. 7, this inhomogeneity of the magnetic field
It can be used as a chair selection gradient GS. Advantageously, this magnetic field
The uniformity may be linear. Otherwise, the slice thickness is
This is because it changes depending on the source position. However, non-linear magnetic field inhomogeneities
Can be used as a permanent gradient (however, this magnetic field
The homogeneity is known, and the bandwidth of the high-frequency pulse is
When a slice is changed to be excited and relocated at a constant slice thickness
). In the case of a permanent gradient GS in the slice selection direction,
The gradient must be switched each time in the chair selection direction. Also slice
Rephasing of nuclear spins in the selected direction (in the embodiment of FIG. 2, separate rephasing
Gradient GRS) in the embodiment of FIGS.
Operated by the permanent gradient GS
You. Only for the time interval τ, the gradient integration value within this time interval
Must be selected to be sufficient for Each phase encoding graph
Switching between the gradients GP1 and GP2 is performed as in the embodiment of FIGS.
Another embodiment is shown in FIGS. Unlike the embodiment of FIGS.
Here, only one phase encoding gradient GP is switched in one direction.
It is. For this purpose, the nuclear magnetic resonance signal S is generated in a second direction perpendicular to that direction.
During reading, one reading gradient GR is applied each time. So
In this case, a pre-phasing pulse is generated between the high-frequency pulses RF1 and RF2.
It is applied in the read direction. Under the first pulse in the read direction, the first pulse
Nuclear magnetic resonance signals are read out, and successive bipolar pulses in the readout direction
Under each positive partial pulse of, another nuclear magnetic resonance signal S is read out. that time,
The gradient pulse sequence in the readout direction shows that the nuclear spin
It is formed so as to be rephased in the reading direction. Therefore, the conventional
As in the method, one complete row of the raw data matrix is obtained per scan.
Based on the multi-slice excitation according to the invention, here a small time shift τ
One row is obtained for each row data matrix of several slices. magnetic field
Readout due to non-uniformity
The distortion in the direction can be compensated for using known methods.
In the case of the pulse sequences of FIGS.
It is formed as a spin echo based on the high frequency pulse. But refor
Eliminates the high-frequency pulse RF2 and the associated slice selection gradient GS3
By doing so, a gradient echo can be formed,
Zing pulse GSR eliminates the reversing action of refocusing high-frequency pulse RF2.
Therefore, it is necessary to make the direction negative.
Such a change is, in particular, the method of FIGS.
It is advantageous. Thus, for example, performing a chemical shift imaging method
The resonance frequency obtained in that way is the slice frequency for each pixel.
The chair is determined to be selective. One application example is fat-water-discrimination.
In another embodiment, the pulse sequences of FIGS.
By eliminating the selective gradient GS3, the high-frequency refocusing pulse R
F2 can be changed to be non-selective. Therefore, various slices
Thus, various echo times TE can be adjusted. At that time,
The spin echo signal from the chair has a column sequence opposite to the column sequence at the time of excitation.
Is formed. Unselected riff
When the focusing RF pulse RF2 is used, the echo time can be reduced.
In the case of a sequence that is repeated at high speed, the total measurement time can be reduced.
Wear. This is because the time of the non-selective refocusing pulse is relatively short.
is there.
Another embodiment of the method of the present invention is shown in FIGS. At that time, the excitation height
The frequency pulse RF1 is non-slice selective, and the refocusing high frequency pulse
RF2 is slice-selective. Otherwise, this embodiment is similar to FIGS.
5 corresponds to the fifth embodiment. Using non-slice selective refocusing high frequency pulse
In this case as well, the time position of the refocusing high-frequency pulse RF2 is
Adjust different echo times TE for each slice as determined
can do. Read prephasing gradient in readout direction
And the switching takes twice as long as in the variant of FIGS.
. This is because the interval between each nuclear magnetic resonance signal is τ (each high-frequency pulse-refocuser).
(Interval between the single pulses RF2) to 2τ. Therefore, the read gradient
Of each gradient switching time
Can also be reduced. Furthermore, by using non-selective excitation pulses,
As compared with the embodiments 11 to 15, the minimum echo time can be further reduced.
FIGS. 16 to 20 show that the non-selective excitation high-frequency pulse RF1 has a readout gradient.
Shown together with GR. However, the combination with the single point method of FIG.
Both are possible as well.
The embodiment of FIGS. 21 to 25 differs from the embodiment of FIGS.
The sequence is reversed during refocusing, i.e. the first excited
The chair is finally refocused. By doing so, each slice
Different echo times are obtained. Further, the interval between each nuclear magnetic resonance signal S
τ (interval between two excitation or refocusing high-frequency pulses) changes from τ to 3τ
And the time available for reading is extended with respect to the time interval τ.
It is. Therefore, the readout pulse for the original readout pulse or rephasing pulse can be read.
It is also possible to select a relatively small gradient amplitude for the gradient GR.
As a result, the requirements on the gradient amplifier are relatively small.
