Electrode probe used in high temperature and high radioactivity water environment
Field of the invention
The present invention is directed to hot water, that is, water having a temperature of about 150 ° C. or higher.
Reduction of the corrosion potential of selected components. More specifically, the present invention
Electrochemical potential in water reactors, for example when hydrogen is injected into reactor water
About monitoring of files.
Background of the Invention
Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is used for structural components, piping and clamps exposed to high temperature water.
This is a known phenomenon that occurs in reactor components such as tools and welds. Reactor configuration
Elements include, for example, differential thermal expansion, operating pressure required for containment of reactor water,
Residue due to welding, cold working and other irregular metal treatments
It is subject to various stresses related to other causes such as stress. Furthermore, water chemistry,
Welding, heat treatment and radiation increase the susceptibility of metals in components to SCC
Sometimes
When oxygen is present in reactor water at a concentration of 5 ppb or greater, SCC
It is well known that it occurs at a high rate. SCC also increases in high radiation flux
In this case, oxidizing species such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and short-lived
Arising from Such oxidizing species can
Increases chemical corrosion potential (ECP). Electrochemical corrosion occurs on anodes on metal surfaces
From the area of the cathode to the area of the cathode. ECP has a corrosion phenomenon
A measure of the dynamic tendency that develops, for example, SCC, corrosion fatigue, corrosion film thickening
And a basic parameter in determining the general corrosion rate.
Grain boundary stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of susceptible material
One method that has been adopted to reduce the is the application of hydrogen water chemistry (HWC).
This alleviates the condition where the oxidation potential of the BWR environment is further reduced. This effect
The result is achieved by adding hydrogen gas to the reactor feed. Hydrogen is the reactor vessel
When it reaches, it reacts with oxidizing species formed in the radiation reaction to improve water. This
This reduces the concentration of the decomposed oxidizing species in the water near the metal surface.
304 type stainless steel IGSCC used in BWR is
By reducing the ECP of stainless steel to -0.230V (SHE) or less.
It has been shown that they can be summed. An effective way to achieve this goal is to use hydrogen
Into the water supply. The injected hydrogen is used in water such as decomposed oxygen
It reduces the level of oxidizing species and consequently reduces the ECP of metals in water.
To quantify the level of hydrogen injection needed to achieve IGSCC protection
The first method used was the BCP reactor water ECP in a particular area of interest.
Measuring
And Monitoring of electrochemical potential is traditionally mounted in recirculation piping
Or installed in an external vessel having a source of water from the reactor water in the recirculation piping.
Performs using a pair of electrochemical cell (half-cell) probes or electrodes
Is done. These electrodes are accessible to the external environment through packing-type
To When the electrode system of interest relates to the potential from the metal corrosion electrode, the metal salt
If the bond is chemically stable and appropriate thermodynamic data is available,
The sensing electrode can advantageously be an insoluble metal salt electrode. Therefore, this
Probe mounted as described above and configured as a reference electrode
The lobes may be based, for example, on a silver-silver chloride half-cell reaction. Once,
Once the Farns electrode half-cell is defined, it can be made of platinum or stainless steel.
It is completed with a sensitive battery part based on metal such as. Reference electrode
And / or validation of electrode pairs is thermodynamics combined with laboratory testing in known environments
It is performed by a suitable evaluation and an appropriate electrochemical calculation based on Nernst. Measured
When the calculated ECP matches the value calculated from thermodynamics, the reference electrode is detected.
Proof is made. Half-cell electrodes developed for use in the circulation piping of nuclear reactors are a tradition
Typically, metal housings, high temperature ceramic seals, and Teflon-branded polyteto
It has been constructed with a polymeric seal such as lafluoroethylene. These structures
Has operated properly in a more comfortable and essentially radiation-free environment with recirculation piping
.
Recently, researchers have been facilitated by irradiation as well as IGSCC (irradiation-
assisted) Effect of hydrogen water chemical control on mitigating stress corrosion cracking (IASCC)
For the purpose of studying or quantifying the flow of fluid near the reactor core itself
Efforts have been made to develop ECP monitoring procedures for unsafe environments. Inside the reactor core
Is that the monitoring electrode can be installed, for example, unused, or
It can be mounted in tandem with a mobile instrument probe, such as an output area monitor. these
Monitors have high temperatures (550 ° F.), high radiation (typically 109R
(Rads) gamma rays, 10 per hour13R neutrons) in a harsh water environment
Is placed. The early design probe structure is both from a material point of view and
Critical requirements to prevent leakage of radioactive material into the environment outside the vessel
