PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To exterminate effectively various bacteria and other microorganisms in cooling water and to prevent environmental deterioration due to pollution in refrigerating equipment or the like by constituting a packing material for a cooling tower out of an antibacterial material. SOLUTION: A cooling tower 1 has a cooling water spray pipe 2, a blower 3, an outdoor air intake port 4, an exhaust port 5, an eliminator 6 and a packing material 7 for air-liquid heat exchange, and a large number of plates made of a synthetic resin material, which are assembled with an appropriate space between them, are used for the packing material 7. In this case, the packing material 7 is constituted of the one having antibacterial properties. The antibacterial properties are given to the packing material 7 by a method wherein an antibacterial material is kneaded in the synthetic resin material before molding and then the plates are molded or wherein the antibacterial material is sprinkled on the plates immediately after the molding and made to stick thereon with hardening of the resin material or wherein the surfaces of the plates are coated with the antibacterial material, or others.
