2. Description of the Related Art First, the principle of compression coding of moving picture information will be briefly described. One frame of a moving image is divided into predetermined large blocks, and the large blocks are further divided into smaller blocks. Each small block is orthogonally transformed, and a transform value obtained by the orthogonal transformation is quantized. Perform compression encoding. Further, a difference from the preceding or subsequent image is obtained, the orthogonal transform and quantization are performed on the difference value to perform compression encoding, and further, inverse quantization and inverse orthogonal transform are performed on the compression code of the difference value. Then, the current image is predicted by returning to the original difference value and adding the previous or subsequent image.

The high-frequency components of an image cause distortion during quantization, and the distortion is accumulated when predicting an image.
Visually increase image degradation. In order to reduce this, for example, a spatial low-pass filter of a matrix as shown in FIG. 4 is provided in the loop. This low-pass filter is calculated from the pixels around the target pixel at the center, and is obtained by performing weighted averaging based on the count assigned to each pixel.
By applying such a low-pass filter to an image, high-frequency components can be removed, distortion generated during quantization can be suppressed, and image degradation can be reduced.

However, when the above-mentioned low-pass filter is turned on, the entire large block is filtered and the filter intensity is constant, so that the target image is not affected. In some cases, the entire image is blurred and the image is degraded. For example, natural images and the like have many high-frequency components, and if the low-pass intensity is increased, the degree of blurring of the image becomes remarkable.

The moving picture compression apparatus performs compression coding by quantizing a transform value obtained by orthogonally transforming a moving picture for each predetermined small block, and also calculates a difference between a preceding picture and a succeeding picture. Then, the difference value is subjected to the orthogonal transformation and quantization to perform compression coding, and further, the compression code of the difference value is subjected to inverse quantization and inverse orthogonal transformation to return to the original difference value. Alternatively, it is possible to perform a basic compression operation such as predicting the current image by performing addition with the subsequent image.

Then, in addition to the basic compression operation, the following characteristic operation is performed. In other words, at the time of pre-scanning as a stage before compression-encoding a moving image, the transform coefficient pattern of a predetermined small block obtained by orthogonal transform is compared with a preset transform coefficient pattern for comparison. Based on the result, the number of small blocks having the same conversion coefficient pattern is counted. Then, the count value counted in the large block composed of the small blocks of the frame specified by the time code input together with the moving image is stored.

At least two or more types of low-pass filters having different functions of removing high-frequency components of an image are stored in the filter group storage means. At the stage of compressing a moving image, the size of a frame of a predetermined time code is reduced. The count value corresponding to the block is read, one low-pass filter is selected from the filter group storage means based on the read count value, the selected low-pass filter is applied, and the high-frequency component of the moving image is removed.

By applying a low-pass filter to an image, high-frequency components can be removed and distortion generated at the time of quantization can be suppressed. However, as described above, the low-pass filter is applied to the entire large block. In addition, since the strength of the filter is constant, the entire image is rather blurred depending on the target image, thereby deteriorating the image.

On the other hand, in the case of the moving picture compression apparatus of the present invention, the frequency characteristic of the moving picture to be compressed is determined based on the degree of coincidence between the transform coefficient pattern obtained by the orthogonal transformation and the transform coefficient pattern for comparison. It is possible to estimate and use a low-pass filter having an appropriate strength according to the frequency characteristic. In other words, the strength of the low-pass filter can be actively adjusted according to the frequency characteristics of the target image while using the low-pass filter effective for removing the high-frequency component of the image, so that image deterioration can be appropriately prevented.

The low-pass filter means may apply, for example, a low-pass filter capable of executing weighted averaging processing using a matrix-type coefficient allocated to a target pixel at the center and pixels around the target pixel, on the moving image. It is conceivable to configure. In the case of this type of filter, as a basic property, the larger the coefficient value and the larger the matrix, the higher the low-pass capability. Therefore, a filter having a high low-pass capability is used for an image whose frequency characteristics are biased toward the low frequency region, and a filter having a low low-pass capability is used for an image whose frequency characteristics are biased toward the high frequency region. Good. Note that the term “filter with low low-pass capability” includes the case where there is no low-pass capability. That is, the same case as not applying the low-pass filter may be included.

There are first and second switches 8 and 9 for switching the data input path between the subtractor 10 and the DCT converter 4 and between the subtractor 10 and the adder 11. . The first and second switches 8 and 9 are controlled by the control unit 1 to be switched to a position a when performing intra-frame encoding of an image and to a position b when performing inter-frame encoding. . That is, the first
When the second switch 8 and the second switch 9 are set to the position a, the data input from the video input unit 2 through the low-pass filter 13 is input to the DCT conversion unit 4 without passing through the subtraction unit 10, and There is no exchange of data with the adder 11. On the other hand, when it is set to the position b,

Therefore, the subtraction unit 10 is used in the case of performing inter-frame coding, and calculates the difference between the current image and the previous image or the subsequent image. At this time, since the first switch 8 is at the position "a", DCT transformation and quantization are also performed. The adder 11 is also used in the case of performing inter-frame coding, and performs inverse quantization and inverse DCT on the transform coefficient value of the difference to return to the original difference value.
At this time, since the second switch 9 is set to the position "a", by adding the image before or after the input, it contributes to predicting the current image.

The matching pattern stored in the pattern memory 17 can be freely set by the control block 1. Similarly, the control unit 1 can set a threshold value stored in the threshold value storage unit 18 described above. The slice circuit 19 obtains a transform coefficient from the DCT transform unit 4 during the compression encoding, compares the transform coefficient with the threshold value stored in the threshold value storage unit 18 to determine the magnitude of the value. The pattern is compared with the set matching pattern in the pattern memory 17, and when the pattern matches, a match signal is sent to the counter section 15. Then, as described above, the data is sent from the counter unit 15 to the control unit 1.

As described above, according to the moving picture compression apparatus of the present embodiment, at the time of pre-scanning as a stage before compression coding of a moving picture, the transform coefficient pattern of a predetermined small block obtained by DCT transform is used. Is compared with a preset conversion coefficient pattern for comparison, and the number of small blocks having the same conversion coefficient pattern is counted based on the comparison result. Then, the count value counted in the large block composed of the small blocks of the frame specified by the time code input together with the moving image is stored. The filter group 21 stores at least two or more types of low-pass filters having different functions of removing high-frequency components of an image. When the moving image is compressed, it corresponds to a large block of a frame of a predetermined time code. The count value is read, one low-pass filter is selected from the filter group 21 based on the read count value, and the selected low-pass filter is applied to remove a high-frequency component of the moving image.

On the other hand, in the case of the moving picture compression apparatus according to the present embodiment, the frequency characteristic of the moving picture to be compressed is determined based on the degree of coincidence between the transform coefficient pattern obtained by DCT and the transform coefficient pattern for comparison. Is estimated, and a low-pass filter having an appropriate strength according to the frequency characteristic can be used. In other words, the strength of the low-pass filter can be actively adjusted according to the frequency characteristics of the target image while using the low-pass filter effective for removing the high-frequency component of the image, so that image deterioration can be appropriately prevented.
