内交換機においては、発呼電話機が外線又は内線からの
ものであるかによって、呼出信号(ベル信号)の鳴動パ
ターンを相違させているものがあったが、この鳴動パタ
ーンにより応答者は外線からか又は内線からの呼出しで
あるかだけの情報を得ること以外の使用目的はなかっ
た。また電話局のアナログ電話網に接続された電話機
は、着信時に呼出信号(ベル信号)を受信すると、受信
したその呼出信号の鳴動パターンそのままのパターンで
鳴動音を出力するだけであった。
