Then, foreign substances such as products generated by corona discharge, dust existing inside the image forming apparatus, and floating toner adhere to the corona discharge wire. Then, due to the adhesion, discharge unevenness of the corona discharge wire occurs, which causes deterioration of image quality. Therefore, conventionally, in order to solve such discharge unevenness of the corona charging device, a cleaning means for automatically cleaning the surface of the corona discharge wire is provided, and the cleaning means can be regularly operated at predetermined intervals. Proposed. However, when the cleaning means is regularly operated in this way, it is not possible to prevent the discharge unevenness of the corona charging device because the dirt speed of the corona discharge wire varies depending on the environment.

By the way, as described above, foreign matter such as products generated by corona discharge, dust existing inside the image forming apparatus, and floating toner adheres to the corona discharge wire 11. Then, if foreign matter adheres to the corona discharge wire 11, discharge unevenness of the corona discharge wire 11 occurs and the image quality deteriorates. Here, when foreign matter adheres to the corona discharge wire 11, the corona discharge wire 11 vibrates during corona discharge. Then, due to this vibration, the distance between the corona discharge wire 11 and the photoconductor 1 and the shield plate 12 changes. Then, when the power supply is constant current controlled so that a constant current always flows like the constant current power supply 16, the applied voltage changes as shown in FIG. 3 due to the change in the distance. Therefore, the degree of contamination of the corona discharge wire 11 can be detected by detecting the change in the applied voltage. In this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 2, the variation width ΔV 1 of the applied voltage is detected by the well-known voltage variation width detecting means 17, and a signal is sent to the well-known control circuit 18.
The control circuit 18 compares the variation width ΔV 1 of the applied voltage with a preset reference variation width ΔV 0, and when ΔV 1 becomes larger than ΔV 0 , sends a drive signal to the drive motor 19 and outputs the corona discharge wire 11 Have them be cleaned. In this embodiment,
When the reference fluctuation width ΔV 0 was set to 500 V and an experiment was conducted, it was possible to carry out cleaning at an appropriate timing without causing excessive or excessive cleaning.

Next, a second embodiment of the present invention will be shown. The second embodiment differs from the first embodiment in that a new timing is added as the cleaning timing of the corona discharge wire. That is, in the first embodiment, the corona discharge wire 1
When the speed of the amount of foreign matter adhered to 1 is small, the cleaning interval of the corona discharge wire 11 becomes long. However, when the cleaning interval of the corona discharge wire 11 becomes long, the adhesion force of the foreign matter may become strong due to the longer discharge time even if the foreign matter adhesion amount is small. This easily occurs in a high temperature and high humidity environment. When such strong adhesion occurs, the cleaning member 13 cannot be used for cleaning. Therefore, in order to prevent such a strong adhesion of foreign matter to the corona discharge wire, it is only necessary to add a timing for cleaning at a predetermined interval. Therefore, in this embodiment, even when the variation width ΔV 1 of the applied voltage does not exceed the reference variation width ΔV 0 as shown in FIG.
The cleaning operation is performed when the number of times of image formation since the last cleaning reaches a preset reference number of times of image formation. As a result, the cleaning operation can be performed at a more appropriate timing corresponding to the usage environment.
In the above embodiment, the cleaning operation is performed every predetermined number of times of image formation. However, the same effect can be obtained even when the cleaning operation is performed every predetermined time.

Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be shown. The third embodiment differs from the first embodiment in that a configuration for displaying the corona discharge wire replacement timing is added.
That is, as the discharge time increases, the corona discharge wire 11 accumulates dirt and deteriorates. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 5, as the discharge time of the corona discharge wire increases, the number of times that image formation can be performed from the end of cleaning until the next cleaning is required decreases. And finally, it reaches the end of its life in which the charging performance is not recovered even after cleaning. Therefore, in this embodiment, as shown in FIG. 6, when the variation width ΔV 1 of the applied voltage becomes larger than the reference variation width ΔV 0 ,
The number of times of image formation since the last cleaning is compared with a predetermined lower limit number of times of image formation, and when the number of times of image formation after the last cleaning becomes less than the lower limit of number of image formation, the corona discharge wire 11 Display a message prompting replacement. As a result, it becomes possible to display the proper replacement time of the corona discharge wire 11.
