In such networks, the ends of the cables are staggered between the cables and the external rods or plates, or alternatively between two or more cables to provide a robust mechanical and electrical connection. It is known that it is necessary to connect with. Cables used in power distribution networks typically have a copper or aluminum strand core or a solid core and are generally of a relatively large diameter and relatively difficult to handle. Have difficulty. It is also known to provide a cable clamp that can be used, for example, to form the end of a cable to a busbar, the cable clamp having a tail and an integral, partially cylindrical head. And a female jaw having a tail portion and an integral yoke that partially constitutes a cylindrical socket. The head of the male jaw is received in the socket and is capable of mutual pivoting between the male and female jaws. A cable receiving opening extends diametrically through the head and a cable receiving opening extends radially through the yoke. These openings are aligned in the open and pivoted positions of the male and female jaws so that the cables can be inserted through the openings and are not substantially aligned in the closed and pivoted position of the male and female jaws to clamp the cables. Tighten. The tails are clamped together to hold the male and female jaws in the closed position. This form of cable clamp is not limited to the recently filed British patent application, but also Cornell U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,357,068, 4,479,694 and 4,548,462. And No. 4,898,551. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention includes a first jaw having a first cable clamp fastening portion and a first tail portion, and a second jaw having a second cable clamp fastening portion and a second tail portion. The second jaw so as to move between a cable receiving open position in which the cable is inserted between the cable clamping parts and a cable clamping closed position in which the cable is clamped between the cable clamping parts. Provide an improvement on a pivotally mounted type of cable clamp. According to the present invention, the first opening is provided in one tail portion, and the raised protrusion is provided in the other tail portion, and is positioned so that the male and female jaws are fitted into the first opening when the jaws are in the closed position. To be done. The raised protrusion comprises a threaded opening and a screw fastener is mounted within the threaded opening. The screw fastener is shaped to exert a closing force on the one tail by rotating the screw fastener within the screw opening. These closing forces will move the male and female jaws to the closed position. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the connector is provided with two pairs of male and female jaws for connecting the two cables to each other. The two female jaws are formed back-to-back as a unitary elongated unit whereby the connector in use lies substantially along the longitudinal axis of the two end-to-end connecting cables. Also, this embodiment has two male jaws, one engaging each of the female jaws. Separate securing means may be provided for each pair of male and female jaws, or separate securing means may be configured such that a single securing means acts to secure two or more pairs. Therefore, a suitable series connector is provided for a cable of the type described above, which is simple and easy, requiring no special tools and a slight manipulation of the cable ends to be connected. Can be installed on. The cable clamp described below has a high degree of cable pullout resistance and low electrical resistance. The raised ridges extend towards the opposite tail, so that a short screw fastener or bolt can be used to pre-squeeze the cable into the connector before engaging the bolt to close the cable clamp in many applications. Can be used without the need. In this way, the installation is simpler, the need for special caulking or press-fitting tools is reduced or eliminated, and the profile of the closed connector is reduced. This low profile feature allows the bolt end protrusion to be eliminated when the clamp is closed and allows the clamp to be used in series insulation or in other situations. Also, the advantages of this low profile are important for many other applications where space is limited, such as switchgear devices, switchboards, underground erection of insulating tubes and the like. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the connector provides the further advantage of being able to disconnect and reconnect when needed. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In order that the invention may be better understood, preferred embodiments of the invention are described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings. FIG. 1 is a partial sectional view of a cable clamp according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a preferred gripping mechanism included in the cable clamp of FIG. FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 3a is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 3a-3a in FIG. FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 4a is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4a-4a in FIG. FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of a preferred gripping mechanism configured to clamp a relatively large cable. FIG. 6 is a view corresponding to the gripping mechanism of FIG. 5 for a gripping mechanism configured to clamp a relatively small cable. FIG. 7 is a sectional view of a second preferred embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENTLY PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS FIG. 1 is a partial cross-sectional view of a first preferred embodiment 10 of the present invention, which allows the ends of two cables 2, 2'to be It can be electrically and mechanically connected to each other. In some embodiments, the ends may be configured differently, but as can be seen in FIG. 1, this cable clamp 10 with the same gripping mechanism at each end is symmetrical, about which Will be described in detail later. Although one end of the clamp 10 and the grip portion of the cable 2 on one side will be described, it is understood that the operation and structure of the other end are the same. 2 is a perspective view of the first end of the clamp 10 of FIG. 1 showing the gripping mechanism. As shown in FIG. 2, the gripping mechanism has a male jaw or member 12 and a female jaw or member 14. The male jaw 12 is shown in greater detail in FIGS. 4 and 4a, with the male jaw 12 having a cylindrical head 16 that defines a cylindrical surface 18 centered about a cylindrical axis 20 (FIG. 2). A first tail 22 extends radially away from the head 16 and the male jaw 12 is symmetrical with respect to a plane of symmetry 24 (FIG. 4) containing the cylindrical axis 20. The male jaw 12 has a first cable receiving opening 26, which is oriented in the direction of the tilt angle A with respect to the first tail 22 and the plane of symmetry 24, as shown in FIG. The cable receiving opening 26 is adapted to receive the distal portion of the cable, the opening 26 opening from both sides of the first tail 22 in a window 28 which extends completely through the tail 22. The tail portion 22 defines a free end 30 and a pair of first surfaces 32 adjacent to the free end 30 that face each other in parallel at a distance. Both of these first surfaces 32 are parallel to the plane of symmetry 24. A fastener receiving opening 34 extends completely through the first tail 22 to receive the fastener as described below. 2, 3 and 3a provide a detailed view of the female jaw 14, which is generally C-shaped and which receives a cylindrical head 16 for pivoting about a cylindrical axis 20. It has a head receiving portion or yoke 36 which forms a sized partial cylindrical socket 37. The yoke 36 is integrally connected to a second tail 38 which is positioned to reach the window 28 when the first tail 22 and the second tail 38 are clamped together. Have. The second cable receiving opening 42 is positioned to extend through the yoke 36 and align with the opening 26 when the male and female jaws are in the open position for receiving cables, at which time the first tail 22 and the second tail 38. And are separated from each other. The second tail 38 comprises an intermediate portion 44, an end portion 45 and two opposing parallel second faces 46. A screw boss or key 48 is secured in the opening 44 through the intermediate portion 44 of the second tail 38 and aligned with the opening 34 when the first tail 22 and the second tail 38 are clamped together. As a result, the opening 34 fits over the upright portion of the boss 48. Alternatively, the boss 48 may be projected as a protrusion on the first tail 22 and subsequently machined to its final shape. As a matter of fact, this setup is currently selected. 5 and 6 show how the gripping mechanism is closed by a fastener 52 that clamps the cable. Fasteners 52 clamp first tail 22 and second tail 38 together to hold jaws 12, 14 in the closed position for clamping the cable. In use, fastener 52 is first removed and male jaw 12 is rotated until first tail 22 and second tail 38 reach an open position (not shown) away from each other. The end portion 54 of the cable 2 is then passed through the cable receiving openings 26, 42 and inserted until the end portion abuts the end of the window 28. The male jaws 12 are then rotated towards the closed position shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 and the fasteners 52 are used to clamp the first and second tails 22, 38 together. As a result, the protrusion 40 enters the window 28, and the cable 2 is gripped at four points indicated by arrows in FIG. As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, male jaw 12 and female jaw 14 can be assembled in two different orientations to grip cables of two different diameters. In FIG. 5, the male jaw 12 is at an angle B in a first orientation that separates the open and closed positions. In FIG. 6, the male jaw 12 has been rotated by 180 ° about an axis of symmetry contained in the plane of symmetry 24 and perpendicular to the axis of cylinder 20. Due to the tilt angle A shown in FIG. 4, in this alternative position, the angular separation between the open and closed positions of the male jaw 12 is B + 2A, thus assembled as shown in FIG. The gripping mechanism at this time is operated to grip a thinner cable. In this regard, the gripping mechanism functions in a manner similar to the cable clamp described in detail in the Cornell patent above. The fastener 52 is in the form of a bolt 52 that passes through the opening 24 in the tail 22 of the male jaw 12 and engages a threaded hole in the boss 48. As shown, a washer 53 may be included if necessary or desired. It is desirable that the bolt 52 should not protrude from the boss 48 to minimize the frontal morphology of the assembled connector. During installation, the tail must be closed by some external force sufficient to allow the bolt 34 positioned through the opening 34 to reach and engage the threads of the opening of the boss 48. After such engagement, the tail is further closed by tightening the bolt. Having an upright boss 48 means that for a given length of bolt 52, the tail does not have to be closed as much as it would be without the boss 48 before being screwed. . Alternatively, the shorter bolts 52 can be used to fully close the tail by being able to close a certain amount by the available external force. In particular, the bolt 52 should be dimensioned so that it does not protrude from the closed tail. As is apparent from the drawings, the preferred configuration is to provide a boss 48 above the plane of the tail 38 that projects an amount approximately equal to the thickness of the tail 22, and a screw shank length approximately equal to the combined thickness of the two tails. Is to use a bolt having a height. As mentioned above and as is apparent from FIG. 1, the clamp 10 according to this embodiment comprises two gripping mechanisms, as described in detail with reference to FIGS. 2 to 6. Each of the male members can then be used in a separate one of the two directions mentioned above, whereby the connector can connect two cables of different diameters. The cable receiving openings of one or both of the two gripping mechanisms may be suitably shaped to specifically receive and grip one core of a 119 ° solid fan cable. Such cable receiving openings are described in the recently filed UK patent application no. The clamps are described in detail in the issue. As will be appreciated, the cable clamp 10 provides a simple yet highly effective method for connecting cables. It simply requires stripping the cable end insulation, inserting the cable end into the cable receiving opening of the gripping mechanism, and clamping the pair of jaws together. Of course, such cable clamps should preferably be insulated in many applications. This insulation can be done simply by wrapping an automatically amalgamating insulating tape around the assembled cable clamp. The application of such an insulating coating can be facilitated by rolling the ends of the female jaws of the connector, as indicated by 62 in FIGS. 2 and 3a. Also, such rounding of the ends allows the clamp to be attached to certain tubes and spaces that are limited in size by electrical codes, regulations, and practices. In another embodiment, the cable clamp of the present invention may have more than two gripping mechanisms as described above, wherein the first jaw of each gripping mechanism is an integral unit with the first jaw of the other gripping mechanism. Formed as. This allows the connection of two or more cables. In clamp 10, jaws 12 ', 14' form a mounting structure for mounting jaws 14 to cable 2 '. The mounting structure may take other forms, such as a further opening 70 "(FIG. 7) in the tail of one of the jaws 12", 14 ". Such further opening may be jaws 12", 14 ". It is possible to receive fasteners for fixing the "" to the busbar etc. Of course, such an additional opening may also be provided in the tail of one of the jaws 12, 14, 12 ', 14'. , The cables can be connected not only to each other, but also to busbars, etc. The components of the cable clamp 10 are preferably made of an aluminum alloy with an electrical conductivity of 40% or more of the international annealed copper standard. The cable receiving opening should preferably be made approximately 110% the size of the largest cable to be clamped, with all major components of the connector having a substantially constant cross-sectional shape. In these cases, these components are preferably machined from extruded forging metal pieces. The connector of the preferred embodiment of the present invention can handle voltages up to 132 kilovolts. Of course, it should be understood that a wide range of modifications and variations to the preferred embodiment described above can be made, for example different clamping configurations can be adapted and, if desired, from the structure shown above. In fact, the present invention can be readily adapted for a wide range of conventional cable clamping structures, and thus the foregoing detailed description is provided by way of illustration and not limitation. It is contemplated that the following claims are intended to cover all equivalents and such Content, it should be understood that intends to define the scope of the present invention.
