Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a biodegradable foamable compsn. rich in biodegradability and excellent in resistances to fungi, bacteria, water, and impact by compounding a starch polymer, vegetable fibers, metal ions, a blowing agent, and an aliph. polyester. CONSTITUTION: The compsn. comprises a starch polymer, vegetable fibers, metal ions, a blowing agent, and an aliph. polyester. A conventional starch-based foamable compsn, though having an advantage of being biodegradable, is inferior to a polystyrene-based foamable compsn. in resistances to water, fungi, bacteria, and impact. A foamed molding obtd. from the compsn. of the invention has not only a high biodegradability because of the starch contained therein but also excellent resistances to fungi, bacteria, water, and impact because of the metal ions, vegetable fibers, and aliph. polyester contained therein.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventional starch-based foamable compositions have the advantage of having biodegradability, but have a better water resistance, antibacterial property, mold resistance and impact resistance than styrene-based foamable compositions. Is also inferior. Therefore, there is a strong demand for the development of a starch-based foamable composition that does not have such drawbacks.
