Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal display device which has high resolution and high brightness by emitting lights the three primary colors in order by a back light source for color display and supplying pixel signals to transparent pixel electrodes in synchronism with the light emission times of the respective colors. CONSTITUTION:The back light source 28 is arranged behind a liquid crystal panel 26 and used for color display. On a substrate 19, red, green, and blue LEDs 30, 31, and 32 which emit the light of the primary colors and a driving part 33 which makes them to illuminate in specific order, for example, field by field, for a specific time are provided. A transmission and diffusion plate 34 is arranged between the liquid crystal panel 26 and back light source 28 and makes the light of the back light source 28 uniform and planar. Then pixels supplied to the transparent pixel electrodes are varied in transmissivity in synchronism with the illumination times of the respective primary colors of the back light source 28, and a developed color and its brightness are determined by the transmissivity of the three successive primary colors; and a multi- colored display is made by one pixel, which can displays one color display dot. Therefore, a display with high resolution and high brightness can be made.

Next, the operation will be described. White light emitted from the white fluorescent lamps 24 a and 24 b becomes a white uniform surface light source by the light guide plate 22 and the reflection plate 23. This white light is separated into light of each color by red, green, and blue filters 15a, 15b, and 15c.
Passes through and becomes red light. Red, green and blue filters 15
Since a, 15b, and 15c are arranged as shown in FIG. 4, three pixels form one dot in color display, and three pixels represent one color. In this case, it is the potential of the transparent pixel electrode 2 of each pixel that controls the transmitted light intensity of each color component. Each transparent pixel electrode 2 is connected to the drain electrode 11 of the switching thin film transistor 4,
While the high level potential is applied to the gate electrode 5 from the gate bus wiring (not shown), the source electrode 10 and the drain electrode 11 are electrically connected, and the source bus wiring (not shown) leads to each transparent pixel electrode 2. The pixel signal is transmitted, the transmitted light intensity of each pixel is controlled, and a color corresponding to the pixel signal is expressed.

Since the conventional liquid crystal display device is constructed as described above, three pixels of red, green and blue are required to display one dot of color display, and the resolution is low. In addition, since the transmittance of the color filter is not so high, the light quantity of the backlight light source cannot be effectively used, and the display brightness is lowered. The present invention has been made to solve the above problems, and an object thereof is to provide a liquid crystal display device having high resolution and high brightness.

On the other hand, the backlight source 2 for color display
As shown in FIG. 5, red, green, and blue LEDs 9 are sequentially driven in one field as shown in FIG. 5, and the three primary colors red, green, and blue are sequentially emitted as shown in FIG. As shown in FIG. 4, the set gate signal 50 is set to 3 of the backlight light source 29.
Since the light emission time of each primary color is synchronized, the voltage corresponding to the pixel signal is simultaneously applied to each pixel during each light emission time of each color. The applied voltage controls the orientation of the liquid crystal of each pixel, changes the transmittance, displays a color determined by the intensity of the three primary color components, and displays one pixel in multiple colors.
One pixel can display one dot of color display,

Example 5. Further, in the above embodiments, the backlight source for color display which sequentially emits the three primary colors is provided on the back surface of the liquid crystal panel, but instead of the backlight source for color display, white light is emitted. A backlight light source for black and white display may be disposed on the back surface of the liquid crystal panel. In this case, in particular, the backlight light source for black and white display is turned on in the same manner as the backlight light source for color display, It is not necessary to perform OFF control, one pixel can display 1 dot of black and white display, and a liquid crystal display device for high resolution black and white display can be obtained.

As described above, according to the present invention, the three primary colors of the backlight source for color display which emits the three primary colors are sequentially emitted, and the transmittance of one pixel is changed according to each color. Therefore, one pixel can display multiple colors and one pixel can display one dot of color display, the resolution is high, and the light amount of the backlight light source can be effectively used without loss of light amount due to the color filter. The display brightness becomes high. Further, by using a backlight light source for black and white display that emits white light in place of the backlight light source for color display, a liquid crystal display device for black and white display having high display brightness and high resolution can be obtained. .
