Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the high-resolution display device consisting of low- resolution liquid crystal light valves by providing N-set of liquid crystal projection devices which form images on a screen one over another and providing each of the liquid crystal projection device with pixels which are 1/N as many as pixels that the formed image on the screen requires. CONSTITUTION:The projection lights from six liquid crystal projection devices 1-6 provided behind the screen 7 are put one over another to form one image. Liquid crystal light valves of the six liquid crystal projection devices 1-6 have resolution 1/6 as high as the resolution on the formed image on the screen 7 requires. The lights from the respective liquid crystal projection devices 1-6 are projected, pixel by pixel, successively in order. Consequently, the projection image on the screen 7 has desired resolution. The projection devices can be put in one housing including the screen by using plural mirrors so that the projection lights from the liquid crystal projection devices are not projected directly on the screen.

2. Description of the Related Art A light beam emitted from a light source is separated into three primary color components of green, blue and red by a dichroic mirror, and an optical shutter (light valve) for changing the transmittance of liquid crystal according to the luminance information of a video signal is passed through each of them. A liquid crystal projection television is known in which a dichroic mirror is combined and an image is formed on a screen via a lens.

In order to achieve the above object, the present invention has a screen and N (N is an integer) number of liquid crystal projection devices for superimposing images on the screen to form an image. Each of the liquid crystal projection devices is characterized by having one-Nth of the number of pixels required for the image formed on the screen.

FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the present invention. Reference numeral 7 denotes a screen on the back of which the projection lights from the six liquid crystal projectors 1 to 6 are superimposed on each other so that one image is formed. Image on. Each of the liquid crystal light valves of the six liquid crystal projectors 1 to 6 has a resolution (pixel number) that is ⅙ of the resolution (pixel number) required for the image formed on the screen 7, and FIG. The pixel arrangement of the projection light from six liquid crystal projectors 1-6 is shown. Each number indicates a pixel in the projection light from the liquid crystal projection device of the same number.

At this time, in this embodiment, the number of liquid crystal projection devices is N = 6, but in general, it is easy to divide m in the horizontal direction and n in the vertical direction to N = m × n. It can be analogized. Further, in the present embodiment, a plurality of liquid crystal projection devices are shown as if they were separate housings for the sake of drawing representation. Instead of directly projecting onto the screen, by using a number of mirrors and projecting the reflected light onto the screen, it is possible to store the screen including the screen in one housing.
