Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize high-quality data transmission and high-speed transmission by transmitting important sentences with image data and transmitting the other characters with a recognized character code at the character recognizing device equipped with a data transmitting function. CONSTITUTION:This device is composed of an image read part 1, memory part 2, character segmenting part 3; character recognizing part 4, image compressing part 5, transmitting data memory part 6, MODEM transmission part 7 and control part 8. The image data read by the image read part 1 are stored in the image memory part 2, and the characters are segmented one by one at the character segmenting part 3 and recognized by the character recognizing part 4. When there are specified characters in the recognized characters, an image area sandwiched by the specified characters is compressed. These data are stored in the transmitting data memory part 6 and successively transmitted to an outside terminal by the MODEM transmission part 7.

As described above, in the conventional character recognition device having the transmission function, the entire sentence is converted into the character code and transmitted. For this reason, if the character recognition is incorrect, the important part is often transmitted with the wrong character code as it is, and the important sentence part is often misrecognized, resulting in low reliability of data transmission.

In the present invention, a character pattern and pattern data having an extremely high recognition rate are inserted to the left and right of the important sentence portion.
When the character recognition unit recognizes and detects this, the control unit stores the image data corresponding to the important sentence portion designated by the character and pattern data in the transmission data memory unit as it is and transmits it. As described above, the extremely important text data is transmitted as image data, so that high-quality data transmission can be realized without erroneous recognition and the like.
In addition, since other sentences are transmitted by the recognized character code, high-speed transmission is possible (even if there are some erroneously recognized characters in a normal sentence, the sentence can be almost understood).

First, the image reading unit 1 reads image data from a book, magazine or the like (step 1 in FIG. 3). The read data becomes binary data and is stored in the image memory unit 2 (step 2). Next, in the character cutout unit 3, character cutout is performed for each character from the upper left corner of the image memory of the image memory unit 2 (step 3). The cut-out image data is recognized character by character by the character recognition unit 4 and converted into a character code (step 4). When the character code is the specific code registered in advance and is at the beginning, it is determined that the specific character code exists, and the specific flag is set (steps 5 and 6).
In addition, the following character area is compressed as image data until the next specific character code is detected,
The data is stored in the transmission memory unit 6 (step 7). If it is a specific character code, but it is not at the beginning, the specific flag is reset (see subroutine in FIG. 4), and thereafter, normal character recognition is performed until the next specific character code is detected, and the recognized character code is transmitted to the transmission memory. Store in part 6. If it is not the specific code, the recognized character code is sequentially stored in the transmission memory unit 6. The above operation is repeated until the recognition of all image data is completed. After the recognition is completed, the contents of the transmission memory unit 6 are sequentially transmitted to the partner terminal.
