Abstract

PURPOSE:To know the residual lifetime of a sheet transporting roller certainly and replace roller at proper time. CONSTITUTION:A black part 2 is provided on the surface layer of a sheet transporting roller 1 in such an arrangement that the depth does not exceed the allowable value for wear as (d)mm. A sensor 3 to sense this black part 2 is furnished to serve judging the replacement timing for sheet transporting roller 1 from change in the signal given by the sensor. Accordingly the lifetimes of sheet transporting rollers, in particular feeding roller, can be sensed individually, which enables replacement of feeding rollers at respective proper times.

2. Description of the Related Art Paper conveyance rollers, especially paper feed rollers of image forming apparatuses, have the function of separating stacked papers, and therefore need to be made of a material with a high coefficient of friction, such as a rubber material. . However, in general, rubber materials with a high coefficient of friction are disadvantageous in terms of wear. Furthermore, the conditions under which the paper feed roller is used for handling paper are severe, and strict requirements are placed on the paper feed roller against wear in order to feed the paper accurately. In order to meet such demands, it is common for devices with high printing speeds or devices with long lifespans to periodically replace the paper feed roller. In this case, the timing of regular roller replacement is often managed based on the number of prints. When there are multiple paper feed slots, the amount of wear on the paper feed rollers at each paper feed slot is usually different because the paper is not necessarily fed evenly from each paper feed slot. However, it is difficult to manage the number of sheets fed for each paper feed port. Furthermore, the amount of wear on the paper feed roller varies depending on the size of the paper being fed.

Conventionally, the above-mentioned variation in paper feed roller wear is ignored, and the replacement period is often set based on the total number of prints assuming the worst-case conditions. Another method is to replace the paper after a paper feeding failure occurs such as multiple paper feeding or non-feeding.

[Problems to be Solved by the Invention] The paper feed roller replacement timing is set based on the total number of prints as described above.
This is because the lifespan of the rubber itself cannot be detected, but due to variations in wear, replacement is performed earlier than the original lifespan, forcing the user to waste money. Furthermore, replacing the paper after a paper feeding failure actually occurs will inevitably cause inconvenience to the user. in this way,
Conventionally, it has been extremely difficult to replace the paper feed roller in a timely manner during the life of the roller.

[Means for Solving the Problems] According to the present invention, the surface layer of the paper transport roller has a portion whose color is different from that of the surface layer, and the depth of this portion is approximately the same as that of the paper transport roller. This problem is solved by ensuring that the wear amount is within the allowable amount of -ra.

[Operation] The different colored portions provided on the surface of the paper conveyance roller, especially the paper feed roller, wear out as the roller surface wears down. Since the depth of this portion is approximately the allowable amount of wear on the paper feed roller surface, when this portion disappears, it means that the wear of the paper feed roller has exceeded the allowable value. By detecting the disappearance of the different colored portions using, for example, a sensor, it is possible to know when to replace the paper feed roller. .

In FIG. 1, the color of the paper feed roller 1 is gray.
A plurality of portions 2 of a color different from gray are provided on the surface layer. The paper feed roller 1 rotates around an axis AA'. The portions 2 are disposed discontinuously on the outer periphery of the paper feed roller 1 at regular intervals in the direction of rotation thereof. The portion 2 can be molded in black on the surface layer of the paper feed roller 1, for example, by multicolor molding. A reflective photointerrupter 3 is provided to detect these portions 2, and its optical axis 4
points toward the rotation path of part 2.

When the paper feed roller 1 rotates during operation of the paper feed device, if the wear amount of the paper feed roller 1 is still within the allowable value, the gray color and portion of the surface of the paper feed roller 1 will change. 2 and black appear alternately on the optical axis 4 of the photointerrupter 3. At this time, since the reflectance of gray is high while the reflectance of black is low, the signal from the photointerrupter 3 has a waveform in which Hi and Lo appear alternately, as shown in FIG. .

When the wear of the paper feed roller 1 progresses and the amount of wear exceeds the allowable value dmm, the depth of the portion 2 becomes dmm.
Therefore, the portion 2 and hence its black color disappear from the surface of the paper feed roller 1. Therefore, the surface of the paper feed roller 1 is only gray, and the signal from the photointerrupter 3 is only Hi, as shown in FIG. By displaying this signal change as a warning sign or sound,
It is possible to know when to replace the paper feed roller 1.

[Effects of the Invention] According to the present invention, it is possible to detect the lifespan of the paper conveyance roller, especially the paper feed roller, so that the paper feed roller can be replaced in a timely manner. There is no longer any need for unnecessary expense or inconvenience. Also, the paper feed roller
By providing a sensor that automatically detects the wear of the paper feed roller, even the user can clearly know the lifespan of the paper feed roller, making maintenance of the paper feed apparatus extremely easy.
