Foamed products made of expandable polystyrene beads have excellent cushioning and heat insulation properties, and are lightweight, so they can be used as packaging materials,
Widely used in insulation materials, containers, etc. These foam molded products are often colored to further increase their commercial value. The following three methods are commonly used to obtain colored expanded polystyrene moldings. That is, a method of applying or spraying a paint etc. to an expandable polystyrene molded article, a method of dissolving a dye or pigment in a styrene monomer during the production of expandable polystyrene beads, or a method of impregnating expandable polystyrene beads with a dye;
This method involves attaching dyes or pigments to the surface of expandable polystyrene beads. The present invention relates to one of these methods. Comparing these three methods, method (1) requires drying after coloring and is very complicated, so it is rarely used. In this method, coloring is carried out in the plant for manufacturing expandable polystyrene beads, and if uncolored or colored expandable polystyrene beads are co-produced in the same plant, the colored particles remaining in the plant will be removed. Expandable polystyrene beads tend to get mixed in, making it necessary to clean the inside of the plant, which poses problems for continuous production. The method involves coloring the surface of the expandable polystyrene beads after production, and conventionally the expandable polystyrene beads were colored by mixing a coloring agent such as a dye or pigment with the expandable polystyrene beads.

The production of foamed polystyrene molded products involves filling a mold with pre-expanded particles of expandable polystyrene beads that have been primarily foamed by steam heating or other methods.
It is obtained by thermally fusing pre-expanded particles by reheating. Therefore, if only the surface of the expandable polystyrene beads is colored, no uncolored portions will be exposed on the surface of the foam molded product. Moreover, colored expandable polystyrene beads can be obtained very simply by simply mixing expandable polystyrene beads and a coloring agent. However, in the conventional method, the expandable polystyrene beads and the powdered colorant are simply mixed and processed, and therefore, the expandable polystyrene beads and the colorant tend to separate.

The molding process of expandable polystyrene beads basically consists of (i) a step of pre-expanding the expandable polystyrene beads, (ii) a step of curing the pre-expanded particles, and (iii) a step of molding the cured pre-expanded particles. . In each of these processes, the colored expandable polystyrene beads of the conventional method described above have a separated coloring agent attached to equipment, piping, etc., and then in the same process, expandable polystyrene beads that are uncolored or colored in other colors are molded. When processing, equipment and piping are contaminated by colorants that have adhered to them. Therefore, after molding the colored expandable polystyrene beads produced by the above method, it was necessary to thoroughly clean the equipment and piping. As a method to improve the drawbacks of these methods, there is a method in which a powdered binder such as stearic acid monoglyceride is mixed with the colorant in advance in order to prevent the colorant from separating from the expandable polystyrene beads. The effect cannot be said to be sufficient. In addition, as seen in Japanese Patent Publication No. 52-41303, a method has been proposed in which the dye is dissolved in a mixed system of solvent and water, and the expandable polystyrene beads are immersed in this solution for coloring. It is not practical because it is complicated due to the addition of a drying process.

The organic pigment used for coloring (hereinafter simply referred to as pigment) is mixed in advance with an organic liquid coloring agent having a certain degree of compatibility with the expandable polystyrene beads to form a paste toner. In the present invention, organic liquid vehicles having a certain degree of compatibility with expandable polystyrene beads include plasticizers, drying oils,
The paste-like pigment-containing toner easily and uniformly adheres to the surface of the expandable polystyrene beads using a low-volatile solvent, etc., and the adhered toner does not peel off, thereby contaminating equipment, piping, etc. It has a degree of compatibility and affinity with expandable polystyrene beads. It should be noted here that color vehicles with excessive compatibility, such as those that dissolve expandable polystyrene beads, should be avoided as they may cause beads to aggregate or stick, but other color vehicles with low compatibility should be avoided. It can be used by mixing with.

For 100 parts by weight of expandable polystyrene beads,
Usually, paste toner containing pigment is 0.1 to 1.0
Part by weight, particularly preferably 0.3 to 0.5 part by weight, is added and mixed. If it is less than 0.1 part by weight, it is insufficient for uniform adhesion, and if it exceeds 1.0 part by weight, it may drip from the beads, which is undesirable.

Uniformly colored expandable polystyrene beads are obtained by mixing the paste toner obtained by mixing the pigment and organic liquid coloring agent with expandable polystyrene beads.
In this mixing step, it is not preferable to mix the pigment and the organic liquid color vehicle non-uniformly, or to add and mix them separately, as this will cause non-uniform coloring of the surface of the expandable polystyrene beads.
