Abstract

PURPOSE:To preserve a cut flower by immersing the cut end of the cut flower in the aqueous solution of a cut flower preservative containing 4- or 5- fluorotryptophan as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A preservative for cut flowers contains 4- or 5-fluorotryptophan as an active ingredient. Cut flowers are preserved with the cut flower- preservative containing the active ingredient in a concentration of 0.1-1000ppm (preferably 0.2-600ppm). The aqueous solution for the preservative can be mixed with a surfactant (e.g. an alkylbenzene sulfonic acid salt), a polar solvent such as ethanol, nutritive sources such as nitrogen, phosphorus and sucrose, fine amounts of nutritive elements such as iron and zinc, a plant growth regulator such as B-nine, etc. The method for preserving the cut flowers includes a method in which the freshness of the cut flowers is preserved while immersing the cut flowers in the preservative aqueous solution and a method in which the cut flowers are immersed in the preservative solution for a set time to preserve the freshness thereof (after harvested, the cut flowers are immersed in the aqueous solution for a set time and then shipped).

Typical examples of preserving cut flowers according to the present invention include a method in which freshness is maintained while immersed in an aqueous solution of 4- or 5-fluorotryptophan, and a method in which freshness is maintained thereafter by immersing flowers for a certain period of time. The former includes so-called post-processing, such as when cut flowers are sold in containers such as buckets at stores, or when cut flowers are arranged in vases at home or at exhibitions, and the latter includes, for example, post-processing when flowers are harvested. There is a so-called pre-treatment in which the producer then performs chemical treatment for a certain period of time before shipping. In this way, the present invention can be used in many situations.
