It has 18 carbon atoms. Generally mixtures of free fatty acids derived from natural sources are used. A preferred fatty acid mixture is the coconut/tallow fatty acid mixture described above. As mentioned above, levels of trans fatty acids should be minimal. When fatty acids are "hardened", for example by hydrogenation, trans fatty acid levels increase, so simply hydrogenating to a lower degree is a convenient method for obtaining the desired fatty acids.

Below about 0.25%, the desired advantages mentioned above are not readily achieved. Even if it exceeds 5%, there is no benefit, it is economically disadvantageous, and it gradually shows a negative effect on the softening properties of bar soap. The preferred amount of free fatty acids is about 1% to about 3%.

The free fatty acid component is preferably used to prepare the solid composition and is mixed into the soap mixture prior to or concurrently with the high shear mixing step. Uniform distribution of free fatty acids in the finished soap bar is easily achieved by high shear action. The free fatty acids can be added after the high shear mixing step if other mixing means are subsequently used to uniformly distribute the free fatty acids throughout the interior of the soap mixture or bar.

Synthetic detergents of this type include water-soluble alkali metal salts of sulfuric esters of high molecular weight fatty acid monoglycerides, such as sodium and potassium salts of coconut oil M acid monoester of 1,2-hydroxypropane-3-sulfuric ester, monomyristoyl ethylene glycol sulfate. Sodium and potassium, monolauroyl diglycerol sulfate sodium and potassium.

Contains alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonic acid detergents having carbon atoms (i.e., water-soluble @ of alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonic acids). These sulfonates form the bar soap of the present invention having the desired lime soap or scum monodispersion properties and having the desired texture uniformity and appearance as described above. It can be processed to form a detergent bar soap composition. Preferably, these sulfonate salts constitute from about 5% to about 15% of the finished soap bar. These sulfonates can be prepared by first reacting the fatty alcohol with epichlorohydrin and reacting the alkyl chloroglyceryl ether thus formed with sodium or potassium sulfite. Preferred fatty alcohol sources used in the above reaction are coconut oil and similar alcohols. Alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonic acids are described in detail in US Pat. No. 2,898,547.

Fatty acid and salt levels are shown in the table. The soap with minor components is pumped into a high shear mixer to mix the fatty acids and soap, and the resulting mixture is placed into a scraped wall heat exchanger where the temperature is raised to about 215°C.
