Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the damage or failure of a thermal head from occurring by a method wherein when an electric current flowing through the thermal head in a non-printing time is detected by the voltage drop of a resistance provided in a supply power source of the thermal head, the supply power source is turned OFF. CONSTITUTION:A detection means is provided for detecting an electric current flowing through a resistance 8 in a non-printing time. When a voltage drop of the resistance 8 causes an electric potential at a point A to fall to be lower than a Zener voltage of a Zener diode 10, a light emitting diode 9 is turned OFF. This is sensed by a phototransistor 11 and outputted to a CPU 16 as a detection signal. When an electric current flowing through the resistance 8 in a non-printing time is detected, the CPU 16 operates a switch 2 to turn OFF a supply power source 1 and makes an indication part 15 indicate a message 'thermal head failure' or 'abnormal thermal head condition' to warn an operator.

The detection means is for detecting the current flowing through the resistor 8 outside the printing time, and when the potential at the Δ point becomes lower than the Zener voltage of the Zener diode 10 due to the voltage drop caused by the resistor 8, one light emitting diode 9 is turned off. The phototransistor 11 senses this and outputs it to the CPU 16 as a detection signal. Then, when it is detected that the current is flowing through the resistor 8 outside the printing time by the above operation, the CPU 16

Therefore, normally, a failure due to burnout of the thermal head 5 is caused by S.
For some reason, the TB signal continues to enter outside of printing time.
This is caused by the current flowing through the thermal head 5 from the power supply 1, so by providing the above detection means, it is possible to prevent the thermal head 5 from burning out.

The main part of the operation of the above embodiment will be explained with reference to the flowchart of FIG. Before printing, the CPU 16 should count the black rate for each block of divided printing 5-1) and set the time width of the STB signal suitable for the black rate of that block S-2). Printing is performed on the recording paper by causing the heating resistor 6 to generate heat (S-3). Outside of this printing time, the detection means detects the voltage drop caused by the resistor 8, that is, whether or not current is flowing to the thermal head 5, and if no current is detected (S-4). No), the thermal head 5 is normal, so the next print is made, and if the detection means detects that current is flowing outside of the printing time (S-4: YES), the thermal head 5 does not do anything. Since this is the abnormal state, the switch 2 is turned off to turn off the power supply 1 (S-5). Display section 1 at the same time
5 indicates that the thermal head 5 is abnormal or broken (S-6).
