As shown in the figure, the base film of the conventional thermal transfer ink sheet 10, that is, the base material l1, is made of a smooth-surfaced plastic film such as polyester, and a heat-melting ink layer 12 is coated thereon. . Hot-melt ink is a solid ink made by mixing a wax material with a coloring material. With the heat-melting ink layer 12 superimposed on the recording paper 13, the thermal head 14 is pressed against the surface of the base material 11 of the ink sheet, and the heating element of the thermal head 14 is pressed against the surface of the base material 11 of the ink sheet. The heat-melting ink layer 12
is selectively heated, a portion of the ink melted on the surface of the ink layer oozes out, and predetermined characters or patterns are transferred onto the recording paper 13.

In the figure, 21 is a sheet-like base material made of polyethylene tereftate film (PET) with a thickness of, for example, 5 μm, and 22 is an ink layer with a thickness of, for example, 9 μm. The ink layer 22 is a mixture of microcapsules 23 as shown in FIG. 2 and a transparent thermoplastic resin (heat distortion temperature: 40 DEG C.) 24, such as vinyl acetate resin, in a weight ratio of 4:6.

The content (liquid crystal) 32 is a transparent high melting point resin (heat deformation temperature: 130°C) such as phenol resin, which does not melt when heated by 4, and the content (liquid crystal) 32 is, for example, cholesteric resin having a structure as shown in FIG. It is a gamma liquid crystal. Examples of cholesteric liquid crystals include cholesterin chloride, cholesterin nonanoate, and cholesterin oleate. As a means for coating the ink layer 22 on the base material 21, the phenol resin forming the outer cover (transparent resin) 31 is resistant to general solvents, while the vinyl acetate resin is resistant to many solvents. Since it is soluble in a solvent, for example, a solvent coating method using acetone as a solvent is used.

When the portion is selectively heated based on printed information, the thermoplastic transparent resin 24 in the ink layer 22 melts and flows, thereby transferring the liquid crystal microcapsules 23 onto the recording paper 13. The liquid crystal portion 32 in the liquid crystal microcapsule 23 causes a change in helical pitch due to a temperature change, and the wavelength of the disrupted light changes, resulting in color change, resulting in a binary color change.
