PURPOSE:To detect initial abnormality of a mechanical seal by providing a construction made up of the mechanical seal wherein at least either a fixed seat or a rotary ring is made of carbon, a turbidity sensor arranged on a shaft seal chamber or a shaft oscillation liquid pipe line system, and a turbidity display device. CONSTITUTION:When obstruction occurs on a mechanical seal and carbon of a fixed seat 3 or a rotary ring 4 is abnormally abraded, the carbon is dissolved into shaft seal liquid 6 to increase the turbidity of the liquid 6. Output of a turbidity sensor 11 is changed accordingly. When the value thereof exceeds a certain value, a turbidity display device 12 lights an abnormality warning lamp 15 to notice the abnormality occurrence of the mechanical seal. The initial abnormality of the mechanical seal can be detected at the stage where the abnormal abrasion of the fixed seat 3 or the rotary ring 4 starts.
