Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a biodegradable softening compsn. having stability by which superior softening property is provided during a rinsing step in washing of a fiber product by comprising a specified quaternary ammonium salt and a specified fatty acid or its salt. CONSTITUTION: A compd. having two 12-24C alkyl or alkenyl groups which are connected to the molecule via an ester link such as a quaternary ammonium salt expressed by formula I (R1 is selected from 1-4C alkyl, alkenyl and hydroxyalkyl; R2 is selected from 8-28C alkyl and alkenyl; T is formula II, formula III; (n) is 0-5) and a non-saponified fatty acid material or salt thereof comprising an 8-28C fatty acid that is mono-, di- or tri-carboxylic acid are blended at a weight ratio of 10:1- to 1:10. They are dispersed in water to obtain a fabric softening compsn. in the liq. form. The compsn. contg. the combined above components is used during a rinsing step in washing to provide extremely superior softening property on fiber products.

Improved STR0M as described in DEGRADATION
Tests compared the biodegradability of ester-linked quaternary ammonium materials to more commonly used quaternary ammonium materials, such as di-hardened tallow dimethylammonium chloride. This test essentially measures the amount of carbon dioxide evolved from a sample subjected to biodegradation as a percentage of the maximum calculated value.
