らの照射光を入射させ、前記液晶表示パネルを透
過したカラー画像光を投影レンズにより拡大して
スクリーン面に投影する投影型液晶表示装置にお
いて、赤、緑、青の三原色のうちの1色の画像を
表示する液晶表示パネルと、他の2色の画像を表
示する液晶表示パネルとの2枚の液晶表示パネル
を備え、かつ一方の液晶表示パネルはP偏光光を
使用して表示を行なうものとし、他方の液晶表示
パネルはS偏光光を使用して表示を行なうものと
するとともに、前記一方の液晶表示パネルは前記
光源に対向させて配置し、この一方の液晶表示パ
ネルと前記光源との間に、前記光源からの照射光
のうちP偏光光は透過させて前記一方の液晶表示
パネルに入射させS偏光光は側面に向けて反射さ
せる光分離用偏光ビームスプリツタを配置し、前
記一方の液晶表示パネルと前記投影レンズとの間
には、前記一方の液晶表示パネルを透過したP偏
光光は透過させて前記投影レンズに入射させ側面
から入射するS偏光光は前記投影レンズに向けて
反射させる画像合成用偏光ビームスプリツタを配
置するとともに、前記光分離用偏光ビームスプリ
ツタの側面と前記画像合成用偏光ビームスプリツ
タの側面とにそれぞれ斜めに対向させてミラーを
配置して、このミラーにより前記光分離用偏光ビ
ームスプリツタの側面から出射する前記S偏光光
を前記画像合成用偏光ビームスプリツタにその側
面から入射させるS偏光光路を構成し、このS偏
光光路に前記他方の液晶表示パネルを配置したこ
