光ファイバに加えられる応力検出器
本発明は・光ファイバに加えられた応力における変化を検出するための装置およ
びその方法に関し、特にそれだけに限定されるものではないが、生じた変化例え
ば光通信システムにおけるそのようなファイバに分岐引出しを形成することを試
みることによって、そのようなファイバに加えられた応力を検出するための装置
および方法に関する。本発明は、そのような装置を伴う、またはそのような方法
を利用するシステムに関する。
通信システムの認知されない分岐引出しは、商業のおよび金融上の利益に関係す
る問題である。最初は光フアイバシステムが展開された時、ファイバにおける光
信号に秘密に接近することが事実上不可能であると考えられた。ファイバ処理に
おける最新の発達およびファイバとの間の光信号を注入および抽出技術は、シス
テムのオペレータがすぐにそれに気イ」くことなしに、光分岐引出しが可能であ
るようになっ丁きている。
本発明の目的は、そのような試みを検出するための装置およびその方法を提供す
ることである。したがって、光ファイバに加えられる応力における変化を検出す
るための方法が提供され、それは次のステップを含む。
すなわち、それは、単一モードにおいてデータ搬送光ビームを伝達するよう構成
される光フアイバ通信リンクを介して複数のモードにおいてファイバか伝播を行
う波長を有する電磁信号を伝達し、
前記モードの相互作用によってファイバの出力で生成される干渉パターンにおけ
る変化を検出するステップを含む。
本発明の第2の見解にしたがって、光ファイバの運動を検出するための監視装置
が提供され、それは、単一モードにおいてデータ搬送光ビームを伝達するよう構
成される光フアイバ通信リンクに複数のモードにおいてファイバが伝播を行う波
長を有する電磁信号を結合するよう構成された結合手段と、前記モードの相互作
用によってファイバの出力で生成される干渉パターンにおける変化を検出する手
段とを含む。
第1図は、本発明の動作の典型的な原理を示した実験的配置の概要図である。
第2図は、本発明にしたがったデータ通信システムの概要図である。
多数のモードのファイバは、ファイバに沿って通過する光エネルギが多数の光学
バスまたは“モード′間に分配されるので、そのように呼ばれる。一つのモード
から別のモードへの伝達がジヨイント、結合、湾曲部でファイバの周囲の状況に
よって与えられた応力から発生可能であるので、モード間のエネルギ分配はファ
イバ内の移動距離に依存する。本発明の方法は、1以上の光モードの伝達を与え
るファイバから現れ出る干渉パターンの全部または一部の監視に基づくものであ
る。特定波長バンドにおける単一モード動作をさせようとするファイバは、その
導波特性が1以上の伝播モードを与える短い波長で監視される。多数のモードの
波長において、ファイバは2個から数百までの個々のモードを通過することがで
きる。
ファイバからの出るとき、各種モードの相対位相は、可視光を使用する時レンズ
によってスクリーン上にそれを映すことによって、認知されることができる干渉
パターンを生成する複雑な方法において構造的にまたは破壊的に干渉する。その
ように生成された干渉パターンは、時々斑点パターンと呼ばれている。斑点パタ
ーンはまた、非可視電磁放射線によっても生成される。
斑点パターンは、スクリーン上の分布がファイバ中の妨害に応じて変化する高い
および低い強度が交互にランダムに生じているものである。全体のエネルギは一
定を保持するが、視野の選択された部分(その他の部分が選択され得たとしても
例えば10%)においてエネルギは、ファイバに与えられる応力の変化に応じて
増加または減少することが当該出願人によって見い出されている。例えば適当な
増幅を有するシリコンまたは■−v族化合物PINダイオードのような光検出器
は、典型的な時間平均値を有するノイズ信号として現れる光エネルギを示す。伝
送バスのある点から信号を抽出しようとする時、監視されるファイバの部分が応
力の変化にさらされる場合に、ファイバの形式上の平衡は変化され、および斑点
パターンは変化する。監視されるパターン領域において、平均ノイズ信号は突然
増加または減少する。試みられた分岐引出しを示すそのような変化は検出器によ
って表され、システムのオペレータに注意するように配置される。
この適用における光学とは、光フアイバ導波体によって導かれることができる任
意の電磁信号を意味し、特に肉眼で見ることができる波長に限定されない。
第1図を参照にすると、レーザlからの光はレンズ3を使用するファイバ2に結
合される。例えば半導体または結晶またはその他の型もまた可能であるがこの例
においてはヘリウムネオンガスのレーザが使用された。ファイバ2を通過した後
、−光の出力は第2のレンズ5を使用してスクリーン4上に映される。ファイバ
2が例えば触られることによって妨害される時、干渉パターンの光の分布は突然
の変化を受ける。この簡単な実施例において、レーザ1は可視波長を放射するの
で、変化は肉眼によって容易に検出される。
第2図を参照にすると、操作上の光通信システムにおいて監視される波長λ2は
可視光より上の赤外線であることが好ましく、上述された型の光検出器または別
のものが必要とされるであろう。この例において、監視する信号λ2はレーザ送
信器1によって形成され、波長マルチプレクサ5によってファイバ2に多重化し
て送信される。その後それはファイバ2に沿って通過し、受信端子で波長デマル
チプレクサ6によって抽出される。斑点パターンの部分は、像レンズを含む監視
受信器7によって監視され、光検出器は上述されたように像の受信部分に配置さ
れる。
ファイバが信号の波長λ、で多重のモードのファイバである伝送された信号の使
用を含むことで、その他の構成方法もまた可能とされる。
試みられた干渉とは異なった各種の要素、例えば熱膨張および収縮と輸送道路の
ような環境によって生じた振動はまた、ファイバに変化をもたらす。これらの要
素による変化の原因を除去するために、斑点パターンは温度と交通状況における
変化、および外部状況または以下の予測できるパターンに関するその他の変化を
考慮に入れた基準値を変える監視受信器7の一部分を形成するマイクロプロセッ
サによって、監視されても良い。例えばこれの周囲温度の増加は、温度変化がマ
イクロプロセッサまたは任意の関連するセンサから離れた伝送ラインの部分で生
じる場合に必要とされるように、直接に監視されることができ、またマイクロプ
ロセッサは比較的ゆっくりとおよびしっかりと検出されたノイズレベルの変化を
考慮し、温度変化パターンのようなこれを認知し、基準値を訂正するであろう。
さらに運輸によって生じた振動パターンは、日の予想レベルの時間および移動の
大きさの両者から認知されることができるであろう。これと反対に、ファイバ伝
送ライン内に分岐を形成するために、ファイバを分岐して引き出すようにそれと
結合するためにファイバをさらすことは必要とされる。この動作は、導管がファ
イバパッケージを支持するので単なる振動よりもずっとより大きい範囲までファ
イバを必然的に乱すことになる。ファイバパッケージは、それ自身で開けられな
ければならない。この型の妨害は、認知できまたは予想される通常のパターンの
結果として起こるのではなく、マイクロプロセッサは通信チャネルを遮断するよ
うに構成され、例えば可視または可聴の警報を生じる通常の変更を表示するその
他の表示を与える。幾つかの配置において、実際の処理なしにファイバに近付く
ことによって生じる振動パターンは、注意する状況を起こすために通常の周囲の
状況とは十分に異なる。
今までのところ説明されたシステムにおいて、監視する信号はデータと同じファ
イバに沿って伝送されている。実際に幾つかの分離光ファイバを含むように伝送
ラインパッケージは通常形成され、これらのパッケージは密封されるので、全パ
ッケージは部品のファイバまでの接近がされるとき乱され、パッケージ内の1個
のファイバによって搬送される監視信号は全パッケージ用の監視を行っている。
この技術はまた、データ伝送なしに妨害監視として使用され得る。ある例におい
て、高い感度はファイバの一部分の周りでパッケージする範囲を減少することに

Claims (5)
- 1.単一モードにおいてデータ搬送光ビームを伝達するよう構成される光ファイ バ通信リンクを介して複数のモードにおいてファイバが伝播を行う波長を有する 電磁信号を伝送し、前記モードの相互作用によってファイバの出力で生成される 干渉パターンにおける変化を検出するステップを含む光ファイバに加えられる応 力における変化の検出方法。
- 2.前記干渉パターンが、 前記干渉パターンの映像を形成し、 前記干渉パターンの部分のエネルギにおける変化を測定することによって監視さ れる請求項1記載の方法。
- 3.干渉パターンの10%以下が監視される請求項2記載の方法。
- 4.単一モードにおいてデータ搬送光ビームを伝達するよう構成される光ファイ バ通信リンクに複数のモードにおいてファイバが伝播を行う波長を有する電磁信 号を結合するよう構成された手段と、前記モードの相互作用によってファイバの 出力で生成される干渉パターンにおける変化を検出する手段とを含む光ファイバ の変化を検出するための監視装置。
- 5.前記手段が、 前記干渉パターンの少なくとも一部の映像を形成する映像手段と、 映像化された干渉パターンの一部のエネルギの変化を検出する検出手段とを含む 請求項4記載の監視装置。
