Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent toner from fixing firmly, to control temperature according to a recording material, and to obtain a sharp image for long time by disposing a temperature detecting element in the vicinity of the end part of a fixing roller. CONSTITUTION:The temperature detecting element 5 is disposed so as to abut on the fixing roller 1 outside a region 4 which abuts on the recording material 3 on the outer periphery of the fixing roller 1 and a means is provided with detects the width of the recording material 3. Thus, toner, etc., does not firmly fix on the temperature detecting element 5 and the surface of the fixing roller 1 is not damaged even when it is used for long time. Besides, even if the width of the recording material 3 is different, temperature is controlled so as to make the center part of the fixing roller 1 optimum temperature. せず)によってヒーター50を断続的に作動させること

という問題があった。そこで、上記温度検知素子を定着
ローラ端部に移動させることで上記の問題を解決してい
た。

った温度分布を示す傾向にあるため、上記のように温度
検知素子を配設した位nで最適な温度を維持するように
制御すると、第5図に示すように定着ローラの中央部で
の温度かバラついて最適な温度を維持できなくなってし
まった。第5図には、幅の異なる三種類の記録材A、B
、C(大きさはA>B>Cの順となっている)を使用し
た場合の温度分布を示しである。最も小さいサイズの記
録材Cの場合には、上記中央部での温度が下がり定着不
良を生じ、また、予め記録材Cに合せて温度を設定した
場合には、最も大きいサイズの記録材Aにおいて、上記
中央部の温度か高くなりすぎて高温オフセットを生じる
という問題があった。

置において、上記温度検知素子は、定着ローラの長手方
向での上記記録材とにおける上記現像剤像の領域幅の範
囲外で上記定着ローラに当接しており、上記温度検知素
子が当接している位置での表面温度を、異なる幅の複数
の記録材に対し定着ローラの中央部での表面温度か定着
に必要な温度となるような、異なった温度に維持する制
御手段を宥する、 ことによって達成される。

示されるように、中央部の表面温度を定着に必要な温度
Tfに維持した場合、温度検知素子が配設されている定
着ローラ1の端部付近では、記録材の幅によってそれぞ
れ異なった値を示すことか確認された。つまり、最も幅
広サイズの記録材Aでは低目の温度Taに、中程度のサ
イズの記録材Bではほぼ定着に必要な温度Tfと同等な
Tbに、最も小さいサイズの記録材Cでは高目の温度T
cになることが分った。

表面温度は180℃に維持することとし、各記録材使用
時における温度検知素子の配設された付近の表面温度す
なわち、第2図におけるTa、Tb、Tcはそれぞれ、
記録材Aにあっては170℃に、記録材Bにあっては1
82℃に、記録材Cにあっては195℃に設定すること
とした。

度を制御したため、記録材によらずに定着ローラ1の中
央部の表面温度Tfを180℃付近に維持することかで
き、定着不良も高温オフセットも生じないということが
確認された。また、温度検知素子は、最も大きいサイズ
の84を用いた場合にも、定着ローラと記録材とか当接
する領域の外側にあるので、20万枚以上プリントして
も定着ローラlを傷つけることがなく、画像上にも黒い
スジは生じないことか確認された。

温度検知素子が配設されているために、トナー等が固着
することがないので、定着ローラ1に損傷を与えること
はない。さらに、前述の第一実施例に比べて定着ローラ
1の長さを短くできるので装置の小型化か可能である。
