Abstract

PURPOSE:To well follow up the waviness of a medium surface by separating a cross rail from two pieces of both side rails and arranging it only at a central part. CONSTITUTION:The head slider consists of two pieces of rails 11 and 12 extending parallel to the running direction of a magnetic recording medium and a cross rail 21 located between them. A positive pressure is generated on the surface of the rails 11 and 12 and the cross rail 21 by an air stream along with the running of the magnetic recording medium and a negative pressure is generated on the level difference surface 40 of the rear end side of the cross rail 21. Since the cross rail 21 is separated from two pieces of parallel rails 11 and 12 and arranged only at the central part, the negative pressure is generally centralized and generated only in the central part of a floating head slider. Thus, a following-up performance against the waviness or the like of the medium surface can be improved.

Floating head sliders include those that generate only positive pressure and those that generate positive pressure and negative pressure. The force generated on the head on a rotating disk in the direction opposite to the medium is called positive pressure, and the force in the direction of the medium is called negative pressure. For the slider that generates only positive pressure as described above, the force to balance the positive pressure is
Since this external force must be applied from the outside and is constant, when the medium is not rotating, that is, when no positive pressure is being generated, the external force becomes excessive and has an adverse effect on the surface of the medium. For this reason, the slider is provided with a function of generating a negative pressure that causes the slider to approach the medium. This is the floating head slider that generates the above-mentioned positive pressure and negative pressure. Details are described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 59-98347.

As shown in FIG. 2, this type of conventional floating head slider has two rails l1 and 12 that extend approximately parallel to the running direction of the recording medium, and the longitudinal axis of the slider that is located between these rails and is approximately perpendicular to these rails. The cross rail 21 was arranged to connect the two rails 11 and 12.

The two parallel rails 11 and 12 and the cross rail 21 form the same plane, and are used as a surface for generating positive pressure, that is, levitation force. The two parallel rails 11
The area surrounded on three sides by l2 and the cross rail 21 is a step surface 40 that is recessed by about 1 to 10 μm from the plane formed by these three rails 11, l2 and 21, and the area is a stepped surface 40 that is recessed by about 1 to 10 μm from the plane formed by these three rails 11, l2 and 21. Acts as a surface that generates a suction force.

In the conventional floating head slider, as described above, negative pressure is generated on the stepped surface 40 having a wide area, and therefore, the ability to follow medium surface fluctuations is extremely poor.

Therefore, if there is a minute protrusion on the disk surface, or if dirt enters between the disk and the slider, it will easily collide with the protrusion, resulting in a head crash.

The floating head slider of the present invention includes two rails on both sides arranged substantially parallel to the running direction of a recording medium, and a cross section between them, the longitudinal axis of which is arranged substantially perpendicular to the two rails. In a floating head slider including a rail, the upper cross rail is separated from the two rails on both sides and arranged approximately at the center of the floating head slider, and the air outlet end of the cross rail is located at the center of the cross rail in the width direction. only the portion parallel to the outflow end of the slider.

The floating head slider of the present invention is composed of two rails 11 and 12 extending substantially parallel to the running direction of a magnetic recording medium (not shown), and a cross rail 21 located between these rails. Tapered portions 13 and 14 are formed on the front end sides of the two rails 11 and 12, and head elements 31 and 32 are formed on the rear end sides. Further, the surfaces of the rails 11 and 12, excluding the tapered portions 13 and 14, and the surface of the cross rail 21 are processed by lapping so as to form the same plane.

Further, both sides of the cross rail 21 are separated from the two parallel rails 11 and 12. Furthermore, only the center portion of the air outlet end of the cross rail 21 in the width direction is a base 25 that is parallel to the air outlet end 16 of the slider.
Both sides of the base 25 are oblique sides 26 and 27. With the above configuration, rails 11 and l2 and cross rail 2
Positive pressure is generated on the surface of the magnetic recording medium 1 due to the air flow accompanying the running of the magnetic recording medium. In addition, an attractive force, that is, a negative pressure, is generated in the step surface 40 on the rear end side of the cross rail 21 in the direction of the magnetic recording medium. As described above, the floating head slider of the present invention has two parallel rails 1l and 12 with a cross rail 2l.
The air outlet end of the cross rail 21 is arranged only in the center, and only the center part of the air outlet end of the cross rail 21 forms a bottom side 25 parallel to the air outlet end 16 of the slider.

Therefore, the negative pressure is also generated almost concentrated only in the center of the floating head slider. Therefore, the negative pressure generated in the floating head slider of the present invention has an effect similar to that of bipot support, and can improve the ability to follow undulations and the like on the surface of the medium.

In a floating head slider including rails on both sides of a book and a cross rail between them, the cross rail is separated from the two rails on both sides and placed only in the center, and the cross rail is placed in the center of the air outlet end of the cross rail. By configuring only the slider to be parallel to the air outflow end of the slider, it is possible to obtain a floating head slider that follows the undulations of the medium surface well and has a low risk of head crash.
