TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a brake fluid for automobiles, and in particular to a high boiling point brake fluid for automobiles that has low sensitivity to moisture and improved viscosity-temperature characteristics. In general, brake fluids for automobiles are required to have a high boiling point in consideration of the paper lock temperature during moisture absorption, and good viscosity-temperature characteristics in consideration of brake responsiveness in a temperature range from low to high temperatures. Currently, polyalkylene glycols and polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers are mainly used as brake fluids for automobiles.
Although these have good viscosity characteristics and rubber swelling properties, they have the disadvantage that their boiling point drops significantly when they absorb moisture because they are inherently highly hygroscopic.
This causes not only the paper lock phenomenon but also corrosion and sludge, which significantly reduces safety. In the United States, in 1972, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
The DOT4 standard was established and the boiling point upon moisture absorption was specified for the first time for automotive brake fluids. Meanwhile, in Japan, JIS4 was established in 1977 as a standard equivalent to DOT4. However, it is extremely difficult to produce automotive brake fluids that meet the strict DOT4 standards (especially wet equilibrium reflux boiling point) using polyalkylene glycols and polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers, which are conventional raw materials for automotive brake fluids. It was hot. Many efforts have been made to prevent the occurrence of this paper lock phenomenon. The present inventors have demonstrated that an automotive brake fluid containing an ester polymer obtained by reacting a mixture of boric acid, polyalkylene glycol, and polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ether has a high wet equilibrium reflux boiling point and excellent viscosity-temperature properties. I discovered something. That is, the present invention has the general formula (However, R 1 and R 2 are C 1 to C 4 alkylene groups, R 3 is C 1 to C 4 alkyl groups, X and Y are numbers from 1 to 4, and n is a number from 10 to 100. The present invention provides a high boiling point brake fluid for automobiles containing 5 to 40% by weight of an ester polymer represented by: In the ester polymer of the general formula, R 1 and
R 2 is a C 1 to C 4 alkylene group, and X and Y are 1
-4, and outside this range, the viscosity properties deteriorate, which is not preferable. The ester polymer of the general formula is obtained by directly esterifying a mixture of boric acid, polyalkylene glycol, and polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ether at a temperature of 50 to 200°C under normal pressure or reduced pressure. for example, The compound was prepared by heating a mixture of 530 g (5 moles) of diethylene glycol, 820 g (5 moles) of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and 309 g (5 moles) of orthoboric acid in a flask equipped with a fractionating tube under reduced pressure (5 mmHg) at 80 to 150°C. It is obtained by heating to continuously remove water. In order to investigate the molecular weight distribution of the obtained product,
As a result of gel permeation chromatography using a column filled with polystyrene gel, the average molecular weight w = 14000 and the average degree of polymerization n = 50.
It turned out to be. This ester polymer is 0.5 of the total weight.
% of water, it is not preferable to use it directly as a raw material for automobile brake fluid. Therefore, it is preferable to add an excess of polyalkylene glycols or polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers to the ester polymer to remove water azeotropically. The main purpose of the polyalkylene glycols or polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers used in this process is azeotropic removal of water, but it also serves as a diluent for the highly viscous ester polymer. The present invention is a high boiling point brake fluid for automobiles containing an ester polymer (formula 1 below) consisting of polyalkylene glycol, polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ether, and boric acid.
It is essentially different from the automotive brake fluid composition shown in No. 105676, which contains a boric acid ester polymer (quadratic formula) consisting of a diol and boric acid. Furthermore, as shown in the Examples and Comparative Examples described later, the product of the present invention is characterized by having a higher wet equilibrium reflux boiling point and excellent viscosity-temperature characteristics than Comparative Examples. These characteristics make the brake fluid of the present invention
DOT3 standard (wet equilibrium reflux boiling point 140℃ or higher, -
It simultaneously complies with both the DOT4 standard (wet equilibrium reflux boiling point 155°C or higher, kinematic viscosity 1800cSt or lower at -40°C) (kinematic viscosity at 40°C 1500cSt or less),
In the automobile brake fluid composition shown in JP-A-53-105676, the kinematic viscosity upper limit at -40℃ of the DOT3 standard
1500cSt cannot be satisfied. Examples of polyalkylene glycols and polyalkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers preferable as raw materials for the ester polymer represented by the general formula include diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1,4-butylene glycol, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, Examples include diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, triethylene glycol monoethyl ether, triethylene glycol monobutyl ether, and tetraethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The ester polymer used in the present invention has a large effect of increasing the boiling point when absorbing moisture, but has a high viscosity, so the amount used should be in the range of 5 to 40% of the total weight of the automotive brake fluid. is preferred. Next, examples of the present invention will be shown. Example 1 A mixture of 530 g (5 mol) of diethylene glycol, 820 g (5 mol) of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and 309 g (5 mol) of orthoboric acid was placed in a flask equipped with a fractionating tube, and the mixture was heated under reduced pressure (5 mm
Hg) and heated to 80-150°C to distill off 260g (14.4 mol) of water to obtain an ester polymer (). As a result of analyzing the average degree of polymerization of the ester polymer () by gel permeation chromatography,
The average degree of polymerization was found to be n=50. Since this ester polymer () contains 0.5% water by weight, 410 g (2.5 mol) of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether was added to 1390 g of the ester polymer () and the water was azeotroped at 150 to 170°C under reduced pressure (5 mmHg). As a result of distillation, 1700 g of a final product with a water content of 0.05% by weight was obtained.
This final product is an ester polymer () 81.7% by weight, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether
Consisting of 18.3% by weight. Three types of brake fluids were formulated using this final product (Examples 1, 2, and 3). Example 2 Diethylene glycol 530g (5 moles), tetraethylene glycol monomethyl ether 1040g
(5 mol) and 309 g (5 mol) of orthoboric acid was heated under reduced pressure (5 mmHg) in the same manner as in Example 1 at 80° C.
The reaction was carried out at ~170°C to obtain 1580 g of an ester polymer () having an average degree of polymerization n=40. In order to remove water contained in the ester polymer (), 520 g (2.5 mol) of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether was added to 1,580 g of the ester polymer () and the mixture was heated under reduced pressure (5 mol).
As a result of azeotropic dehydration at 100 to 150°C under (mmHg), 2100 g of a final product containing 74.8% by weight of the ester polymer () and 25.8% by weight of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether was obtained. Four types of brake fluids were formulated using this final product (Examples 4, 5, 6, and 7). Example 3 A mixture of 450 g (3 moles) of triethylene glycol, 486 g (3 moles) of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, and 186 g (3 moles) of orthoboric acid was heated in the same manner as in Example 1 under reduced pressure (5 mmHg) to 80 to 150 g.
The reaction was carried out at .degree. C. to obtain 945 g of an ester polymer () having an average degree of polymerization n=80. To remove water contained in the ester polymer (), add 260 g of polyethylene polypropylene glycol monomethyl ether with an average molecular weight of 220 to 945 g of the ester polymer ().
(1.18 mol) and under reduced pressure (5 mmHg),
As a result of azeotropic dehydration at 180℃, ester polymer ()
85.9% by weight, polyethylene polypropylene glycol monomethyl ether (average molecular weight 220)
1100 g of final product containing 14.1% by weight were obtained. Three types of brake fluids were formulated using this final product (Examples 8, 9, and 10). Example 4 A mixture of 380 g (5 mol) of propylene glycol, 820 g (5 mol) of triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, and 309 g (5 mol) of orthoboric acid was heated in the same manner as in Example 1 under reduced pressure (5 mmHg) to a temperature of 60 to 120 g.
The reaction was carried out at .degree. C. to obtain 1200 g of an ester polymer () having an average degree of polymerization n=30. To remove water contained in the ester polymer (), 240 g (2 moles) of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether was added to 1200 g of the ester polymer () and the pressure was reduced (5 mmHg).
Below, as a result of azeotropic dehydration at 120-150℃, the final product contains 87.0% by weight of ester polymer () and 13.0% by weight of diethylene glycol monomethyl ether.
1380g was obtained. Two types of brake fluids were formulated using this final product (Examples 11 and 12). The compositions (blending ratios) of Examples 1 to 12 in Examples 1 to 4 are shown in Table 1, according to US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.
The measured performance based on 116DOT3 and DOT4 is shown in Table 2.
