Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the shape of a surface variable and to change refractive power without forming a mechanical constitution on the outside of a lens by providing the title element with a means for applying energy to high molecular gel of a high molecular gel layer formed on the inside of an elastic layer having an optical face.
CONSTITUTION: The high molecular gel layer 3 to be used also as an actuator of a lens element and a solvent layer 4 consisting of liquid adsorbed or discharged to/from the gel layer 3 are formed. The gel layer 3 can absorb or discharge solvent by voltage and consists of a lens part constituting material with high transparency. An interface between the gel layer 3 and an electrode 5 is joined with a conductive bonding agent and a holder 6 of the lens element keeps mechanical strength as the lens element at the time of changing the volume of the gel layer 3 and holds the outer peripheral parts of elastic layers 1, 2. Consequently, it is unnecessary to arrange a specific driving device on the outside and the change of curvature in the shape of the surface can be increased by the impression of small energy.
