Abstract

PURPOSE:To use the EL display device in a transparent state as a window normally and to emit light in emergency and to display necessary information by providing a display part consisting of a thin film EL element to a glass window and applying a voltage to the display part. CONSTITUTION:A couple of electrodes 2 and 6 made of transparent conductive films are provided on a glass substrate 1, and double insulating layers 3 and 5 and a light emitting layer 4 of ZnS containing a trace amount of Mn are laminated between the electrodes 2. When the AC voltage is applied between both electrodes 2 and 6, the light emission layer 4 develops yellowish orange color. The electrodes 2 and 6 form a number, a character, a figure, or a matrix- shaped pattern and displays various pieces of information. Consequently, various displays are made with simple constitution. Further, the device is normally transparent, so it functions as a glass window in a room or passage and displays necessary information in emergency.
