Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the connector which is reliable over a long period while precluding its corrosion due to moisture and water by providing a receptacle cover and a plug cover outside the optical connector and coupling the both together by screws through rubber O rings. CONSTITUTION:The receptacle covers 21 are fitted by screws to the case 11 of optical transmission equipment outside the receptacle 12 of a conventional optical connector. Further, the plug covers 22 and 23 are provided outside the plug 14. Then the plug cover 22 is coupled with the receptacle cover 21 by screws across the rubber O rings 24 and 25, and the plug cover 23 is fixed to the sheath of an optical cable 19. Consequently, even if an outdoor type optical transmitter and receiver is exposed to rain and wind, neither moisture nor water enters the equipment, so its corrosion is precluded and the equipment which is reliable over a long period is obtained.

Conventional technology Conventional optical transmission equipment is rarely used outdoors.
There was no optical connector suitable for outdoor use. FIG. 2 shows a conventional optical connector and an example of its attachment. There is a gap between the ferrule portions 6 of the receptacle 2 and the plug 4, so they are not in perfect contact with each other. Furthermore, the connection between the plug 4 and the fiber cord 8 is also not airtight. Therefore, when using the device outdoors, measures such as installing a large external case including the main body of the device to prevent rainwater etc. from directly hitting the optical connector have been taken.

Problems to be Solved by the Invention However, even in this case, although direct intrusion of rainwater could be prevented, intrusion of moisture etc. could not be prevented. There is also a problem in that rainwater hits the optical connector directly, and moisture and water enter the main body of the device through the gap between the ferrule and the receptacle, corroding the internal circuitry.

In addition, the plug cover on the outside of the plug has the risk of cutting the fiber if external force is applied to the connection between the conventional plug and optical cord, but this plug cover and optical cord secure the external optical fiber cable even stronger. This serves to protect the fiber from pressure applied to the connection between the plug and the fiber optic cable.
