Description
The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for compression molding production tools.
Compression molding systems are used to manufacture parts in a variety of industries. For example, in aerospace applications, compression molding systems are widely used to manufacture aircraft interior panels made from thermoset materials. However, the compression molding equipment components currently used to manufacture these panels are typically very large and heavy, so the manufacturing processes associated with these components can be inflexible, expensive, and inconvenient. For example, it is typically difficult to move compression die components from one location to another and to compress compression die components within a mold. Moreover, the time and expense required to manufacture conventional compression die apparatus is significant. A lighter weight compression die system that requires less time and money to manufacture would be highly advantageous for the manufacture of aircraft interior panels and other objects.

In some examples,

Additive manufacturing is rapidly gaining traction in many industries as a relatively low cost and rapid manufacturing method. Additive manufacturing can be used to form solid objects by additively building objects from 3D models. Additive manufacturing techniques typically layer raw materials and selectively bond the raw materials to form the desired object. The thickness of individual layers will vary depending on the particular additive manufacturing technique used. Exemplary techniques include selective laser melting (SLM), direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused deposition layering (FFF), wire-fed additive manufacturing, and electron beam melting (EBM), among others. Wire-fed additive manufacturing techniques may include wire laser additive manufacturing (WLAM), electron beam freeform manufacturing (EBF3), wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), and the like.

At
At
At
At
At
At
At
In some examples, the second shape of the second compression molded part is identical or nearly identical to the first formation of the first compression molded part. Thus, the second core member and cavity member can be identical or nearly identical to the first core member and cavity member. For example, if the first core member and cavity member were discarded at
At
At

ADVANTAGES, FEATURES, AND BENEFITS The various embodiments and examples of compression matched die apparatus described herein provide several advantages over known solutions for compression molding thermoset aircraft panels and/or other parts. For example, the exemplary embodiments and examples described herein allow compression die tool components to be manufactured at a relatively high rate and at a relatively low cost compared to conventional manufacturing methods, particularly when the compression die tool components are configured to compression mold parts having complex contours.
In addition, and among other advantages, the illustrative embodiments and examples described herein enable the production of compression die components (e.g., mutually interchangeable cavity and core members) having mutually interchangeable central portions that can be supported by a universal frame portion. Further, the exemplary embodiments and examples described herein allow compression die tools configured for molding various parts to be relatively quickly and easily manufactured and stored in relatively little space.
Additionally, and among other benefits, the exemplary embodiments and examples described herein allow compression die components, or portions thereof, to be treated as disposable. Because additively manufactured die components and/or die component midsections can be manufactured relatively quickly and inexpensively, in some cases the components (and/or component midsections) can be manufactured on demand and discarded after use rather than being stored.
Furthermore, and among other advantages, the illustrative embodiments and examples described herein allow compression die components to be cost-effectively manufactured even in situations where the compression die components are expected to be used to compression mold a small number of parts. For example, compression die components configured for compression molding a small number of replacement panels for aircraft models that are no longer in production can be manufactured. In contrast, conventional compression die components are very expensive and time consuming to manufacture, making them impractical for use in manufacturing components that are typically used only for molding a small number of parts.
Furthermore, and among other benefits, the illustrative embodiments and examples described herein allow compression die tool components to be manufactured with less material than would normally be wasted with subtractive manufacturing techniques.
Furthermore, and among other benefits, the exemplary embodiments and examples described herein enable the production of compression die tool components that are significantly lighter in weight than conventional components. Accordingly, compression die tool components according to the present disclosure provide greater flexibility in moving the manufacturing environment when manufacturing compression molded parts. For example, the interchangeable center portions of the compression die components can be easily moved from storage space to compression equipment and then returned to storage. The storage space can be a storage space remote from the compression device. The compression die tool components described herein can be used with lower power compression devices than required for conventional tool components, especially if the compression device is configured to lift one or more tool components.
No system or device capable of performing these functions is known. However, not all embodiments and examples described herein provide the same or comparable advantages.
