音階は五線紙と音部記号と調号と音符を用いて表すことができる。(図1)ハ長調とイ短調は調号を用いない。(図2)鍵盤楽器では白鍵、黒鍵の並びで全音(長2度)、半音(短2度)の関係を理解できる。白鍵、黒鍵を区別せず、隣接する二つの鍵の間の音程は半音であり、白鍵、黒鍵を区別せず、連続する3つの鍵盤の最初と最後の鍵の間の音程は全音である(図3)。長音階は各音の関係が第1音から順に全音―全音―半音―全音―全音―全音―半音(図4)、短音階の自然短音階は第1音から順に全音―半音―全音―全音―半音―全音-全音となる(図5)。変化記号は変記号(フラット)は半音下げ、嬰記号(シャープ)は半音上げる。調号に用いる変化記号は一つの調性でその二つを混在させることはない。
通常、音階の各音は階名も音名も同じ表記がされていることが多い。

音部記号と調号と調性名、主音、音名の部分は使用する楽器、調に合わせて繰り返し書いたり消したりできる。

階名が各段に記載されているので、隣り合うMi-Faの間、Si-Doの間が半音であることがわかる。音名の文字表記を異なるものにすることによって階名(固定ド)でも音名(移動ド)でも音階の構成要素がわかりやすくなる。
