本願は、光学系と、レーザ駆動光源を利用する方法とに一般的に関し、より具体的にはレーザ駆動拡張光源を利用する光ジャイロスコープに関する。
1976年のヴァリ(Vali)およびショートヒル(Shorthill)による光ファイバジャイロスコープ(FOG)の最初の理論的かつ実験的実証以来、光ファイバジャイロスコープ(FOG)は最も商業的に成功したファイバセンサとなり、いくつかの大手製造業者が年間数万ユニットを世界中に出荷している。
本明細書中に記載されるある実施形態は、第1の線幅を有する第1のレーザスペクトルを有する光を生成するように構成されるレーザを備える光学系を提供する。光学系は、ノイズ波形を発生するように構成される波形生成器をさらに備える。光学系は、レーザと光学的に通信しかつ波形生成器と電気的に通信する電気光学位相変調器をさらに備える。電気光学位相変調器は、第1のレーザスペクトルを有する光を受光し、ノイズ波形を受信し、かつ第1の線幅よりも広い第2の線幅を有する第2のレーザスペクトルを有する光を発生するように光を変調することによってノイズ波形に応答するように構成される。
光ファイバジャイロスコープ(FOG)の性能等級は一般的に、ノイズ、ドリフト、およびスケールファクタ安定性という3つの尺度によって決まる。FOGは、戦術上の性能のグレード内ではほぼ排他的に商業的成功を収めており、この場合、それらは船舶および海面下慣性航法、プラットホームの安定化および位置決め、ミサイル誘導に用いられる。慣性グレードFOGの適用例は、航空機、潜水艦、または宇宙船の航行を含み得るが、慣性グレード性能を有するFOGはほとんど実証されておらず、現在はリングレーザジャイロスコープ(RLG)技術が航空機航法市場で優位である。市場でのFOG技術の限界は、一般的に、(たとえば、航空機航法に望まれ得るような百万分の5(ppm)を下回る)高いスケールファクタ安定性を得ることに関連付けられる困難に由来している。従来のFOG設計では、センサは、エルビウムドープファイバ光源からの広帯域超蛍光光によって応答指令信号を送られる(interrogated)。そのような光源は一般的に平均波長安定性が劣っているため、FOGのスケールファクタ安定性が劣ってしまう。広帯域光源の別の欠点は、ドープされたファイバでの増幅された自然放出に関連付けられる根本的な過剰なノイズであり、これは、従来のFOGのノイズおよびARWの大部分を占めている。
図1Aは、本明細書中に記載されるある実施形態に従う光学系10を概略的に示す。光学系10は、第1の線幅を有する第1のレーザスペクトルを有する光22を生成するように構成されるレーザ20を備える。光学系10はさらに、ノイズ波形32を発生するように構成される波形生成器30を備える。光学系10はさらに、レーザ20と光学的に通信しかつ波形生成器30と電気的に通信する電気光学位相変調器40を備える。電気光学位相変調器40は、第1のレーザスペクトルを有する光を受光し、ノイズ波形32を受信し、かつ第1の線幅よりも広い第2の線幅を有する第2のレーザスペクトルを有する光42を発生させるように光22を変調することによってノイズ波形に応答するように構成される。
これらの2つの成分のみの各々から結果として生じるFOGノイズσ(Δν)およびドリフトφ(Δν)を、後方散乱および偏光結合のモデルを用いる例示的なFOGのコイル長および半径を用いて算出されるそれらのそれぞれの線幅ΔνcおよびΔνbから算出することができる。たとえば、図3Aおよび図3Bは、後方散乱モデル(たとえば、エス・ダブリュ・ロイド(S.W.Lloyd)、エム・ジェイ・エフ・ディゴネット(M.J.F.Digonnet)、およびエス・ファン(S.Fan)、「任意の線幅の光源のための光ファイバジャイロスコープにおけるコヒーレント後方拡散誤差のモデリング」("Modeling Coherent Backscattering Errors in Fiber Optic Gyroscopes for Sources of Arbitrary Line Width")、ジャーナル・オブ・ライトウェイブテクノロジー(J. Lightwave Technol.)、第33巻、第13号、2839−2847ページ、2015年7月1日を参照)を用いて、コイル長L=1085メートルの例示的なレーザ駆動FOGについての線幅の関数としてのノイズおよびドリフトの例示的なプロットをそれぞれ示す。図3Aのノイズプロット中の破線は、算出された後方散乱ノイズに基づく外挿である。図3Aは、ある実施形態では、偏光結合ノイズがはるかにより低い場合、レーザ駆動FOG中のノイズが後方散乱ノイズによって排他的に占められることを示す。後方散乱ノイズは、100kHzよりも大きい増大していく線幅については単調に減少する。図3Bは、ある実施形態中のドリフトが、狭い線幅では、後方散乱によって占められ、このドリフトが、100kHzよりも大きな線幅については急速に減少することを示す。ある実施形態中の偏光結合は、1MHzよりも大きな広い線幅でドリフトを占め、100MHzよりも大きな線幅になった後は、それも単調に小さくなる。究極的に、図3Aおよび図3Bは、最も低いノイズおよびドリフトを最も広い線幅で達成することができることを示し、このことは、他の手段によってアクセス可能な程度を超えてレーザ線幅を拡張する必要性を際立たせる。
図5Aは、本明細書中に記載されるある実施形態に従う例示的なFOG光学系10を概略的に示す。光源20はレーザ(たとえば、ルーセントD2525Pなどの10MHz線幅レーザ)を備えることができ、その出力光22は、Vπ=4.7Vで光変調器40(たとえば、Photline MPZ-LN10などの12GHzのEOM)の光学的入力に与えられる。光変調器40は、ノイズ源30(たとえば、Noisewave NW10-G)または別の種類の非ガウスノイズ源からの(たとえば、帯域幅BW=11GHzを有する)広帯域ガウスノイズ32によって駆動されることができる。ノイズ源30の低レベル出力ノイズ32は、少なくとも1つの増幅器34によって(たとえば、RF増幅器チェーンによって;Minicircuits ZX60-14012Lなどの3つの14GHzプリアンプおよび最終的にSHF100CPPなどの12GHz増幅器によって;3つの12GHzプリアンプ35および最終的に18GHz増幅器36によって)増幅可能であり、これについては2Vsat=12.6Vである。十分な帯域幅を与えてノイズ32を増幅するように、少なくとも1つの増幅器34のうちの増幅器を選択することができる。可変RF減衰器35を用いて、増幅器チェーン中でRF信号レベルを調整することができる。RF減衰の微調整は、ノイズ源30の後ろにある第1の前置増幅器に対する供給電圧を調整することによって達成することができる。
さらに、さまざまな変調方式を用いたPRBS変調光スペクトルのモデルは、スペクトルが、光搬送波に加えて、PRBSビットレートに対応するグリッド上で離間される搬送波の高調波の群をほぼ常に有し、これらの高調波が光パワーの大きな部分を搬送することを示した(たとえば、以上で引用したケアン−ポ・ホ(Keang-Po Ho)他を参照)。これらの高調波はFOGでは問題となる可能性がある。なぜなら、それらの線幅は非常に狭く、したがって後方散乱ノイズおよびドリフトを誘導するからである。たとえば、PRBS変調を用いた搬送波および搬送波高調波の含有量の抑圧に対する限界は、以前、わずか−8dBであると測定された。比較して、図6は、本明細書中に記載されるある実施形態に従うGWN位相変調を用いると、11GHzのノイズ帯域幅の倍数または光スペクトル中の他のどこかには、検出可能な搬送波高調波が存在しないことを示す。さらに、図7は、ある実施形態では、単独の搬送波成分の抑圧が−45dB程度に強くなることができる、すなわち、PRBSの場合からの37dBの向上である、ことを示す。
Claims (23)
- 光学系であって、
第1の線幅を有する第1のレーザスペクトルを有する光を生成するように構成されるレーザと、
ノイズ波形を発生するように構成される波形生成器とを備え、前記波形生成器は、少なくとも1つのノイズ源と、前記少なくとも1つのノイズ源からの源ノイズ波形を増幅して前記ノイズ波形を発生させるように構成される少なくとも1つの増幅器とを備え、前記少なくとも1つの増幅器は飽和電圧レベルVsatを有し、さらに
