In recent years, the demand for non-aqueous electrolyte secondary batteries has been expanding as a battery of high energy density capable of storing electrical energy.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
First, the contents of the embodiment of the present invention will be listed and described.
The positive electrode active material for a sodium secondary battery according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a metal oxide having a layered O 3 type crystal structure, and the metal oxide is a first metal element that is occluded and released reversibly, And the second metal element. The first metal element is Na, the second metal element is a metal element other than Na, and contains a transition metal element. Transition metal elements include Ti, Ni and Mn .
The positive electrode for a sodium secondary battery according to another embodiment of the present invention includes the above-described positive electrode active material.
A sodium secondary battery according to another embodiment of the present invention includes the above positive electrode, a negative electrode, a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, and a sodium ion conductive electrolyte.
In a lithium secondary battery, a positive electrode active material having a high energy density of about 600 Wh / kg is also used. However, in the sodium secondary battery, no positive electrode active material compatible with high capacity and high voltage has been found, and there are extremely few positive electrode active materials having high energy density. Even when high energy density is achieved, it is difficult to ensure sufficient cycle characteristics due to the large structural change during charge and discharge.
According to the above embodiment of the present invention, the use of the metal oxide as described above as the positive electrode active material can increase the capacity of the positive electrode active material itself and can increase the average voltage of the battery. Further, since the compatibility of the constituent elements of the metal oxide can be enhanced, the constituent elements can be dispersed more uniformly, and the composition of the metal oxide can be stabilized. By stabilizing the composition of the metal oxide, it is possible to reduce the structural change at the time of charge and discharge, so that excellent cycle characteristics can be obtained.
The above-mentioned metal oxide has a layered O 3 type crystal structure. The layered O3-type crystal structure is a crystal structure belonging to the space group R3m. The layered P2-type crystal structure is a crystal structure belonging to the space group P6 3 / mmc.
A metal oxide having a layered O3 type crystal structure includes a layered structure of a MeO 2 layer composed of a transition metal element (Me) and oxygen, and at the time of discharge, sodium ions are occluded in the layers of the MeO 2 layer to charge the battery. Sometimes sodium ions are released between the layers of the MeO 2 layer. Then, at least in the discharge state, the hexacoordination octahedral site between the MeO 2 layers can have a structure occupied by sodium ions. The transition metal element Me corresponds to the transition metal element contained in the above-mentioned second metal element. The second metal element other than the transition metal is usually substituted at the site of the transition metal element Me in the above crystal structure.
The atomic ratio d of Mn in the second metal element is 0.27 ≦ d < 0. Ru 40 der. When the atomic ratio d is in such a range, a high average voltage is easily obtained, and the resistance of the metal oxide can be suppressed lower. In addition, the composition of the metal oxide is more easily stabilized, which is advantageous in enhancing cycle characteristics.
The atomic ratio c of Ni in the second metal element is 0 .. Ru 46 ≦ c ≦ 0.50 der. When the atomic ratio c is in such a range, it is advantageous in increasing the capacity, and the layered O3 type crystal structure is easily formed, so that the cycle characteristics can be easily improved.
The atomic ratio c of Ni in the second metal element is preferably 0.40 ≦ c ≦ 0.55, and may be 0.46 ≦ c ≦ 0.50. When the atomic ratio c is in such a range, it is advantageous in increasing the capacity, and the layered O3 type crystal structure is easily formed, so that the cycle characteristics can be easily improved.
The atomic ratio a of Na to the second metal element is preferably 0.86 <a ≦ 1.05. When the atomic ratio a is in such a range, the capacity of the metal oxide itself can be further increased.
The metal oxide according to the preferred embodiment has the following formula:
Na a Ti b Ni c Mn d M e O 2 ± α
(Wherein, a is the atomic ratio of Na to the second metal element, b is the atomic ratio of Ti to the second metal element, and c is the atomic ratio of Ni to the second metal element The element M is a second metal element other than Ti, Ni, and Mn, e is an atomic ratio of the element M in the second metal element, b + c + d + e = 1.00, and α is an oxygen deficiency amount Or an excess of oxygen). When such a metal oxide is used, a layered O3 type crystal structure is more easily formed. Thus, the capacity and cycle characteristics can be further enhanced.
Details of Embodiments of the Invention
Specific examples of a positive electrode active material for a sodium secondary battery, a positive electrode using the same, and a sodium secondary battery according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described below with reference to the drawings as appropriate. The present invention is not limited to these exemplifications, but is shown by the appended claims, and is intended to include all modifications within the meaning and scope equivalent to the claims. .
(Positive electrode active material)
The positive electrode active material according to the present embodiment contains the above-described metal oxide. Since the metal oxide can reversibly absorb and desorb (or insert and desorb) the first metal element Na (specifically, sodium ion), the positive electrode active material is a sodium secondary battery Suitable for use in Such a metal oxide is a material that develops a capacity by the Faraday reaction.
The metal oxide contains Na and a second metal element. The second metal element is a metal element other than Na, and includes a transition metal element (element Me described above). The transition metal element contains at least Ti, Ni and Mn, and may contain other second metal elements (element M).
The atomic ratio a of Na to the second metal element is, for example, 0.86 <a ≦ 1.05, and preferably 0.90 ≦ a ≦ 1.05 or 0.92 ≦ a ≦ 1.02. It is more preferable that 0.92 ≦ a ≦ 1.02 or 0.90 ≦ a ≦ 1.00. When the atomic ratio a is in such a range, it is advantageous to increase the capacity of the metal oxide itself. In addition, a high capacity can be easily obtained from the viewpoint that the layered O 3 type crystal structure is easily formed.
In addition, atomic ratio a is a value which reduces at the time of charge, and increases at the time of discharge, when the positive electrode active material which concerns on this embodiment is used for the positive electrode of a sodium secondary battery. The range of the atomic ratio a is preferably a value when the sodium secondary battery is fully charged.
A part of the first metal element may be substituted by an alkali metal element other than Na such as Li and K. The positive electrode active material containing the metal oxide containing such an alkali metal element is also included in this embodiment. However, the atomic ratio of alkali metal elements other than Na in the first metal element is preferably, for example, 0.05 or less.
The atomic ratio b of Ti in the second metal element is, for example, 0.05 ≦ b ≦ 0.45, preferably 0.10 ≦ b ≦ 0.40, and 0.13 ≦ b ≦ 0. More preferably, 37 or 0.15 ≦ b ≦ 0.35. When the atomic ratio b is in such a range, the constituent metals are easily dispersed in the metal oxide, and the composition of the metal oxide can be easily stabilized. Further, the mixing of impurities such as by-products can be suppressed. Therefore, the capacity can be further increased, and the cycle characteristics can be more easily improved.
The atomic ratio c of Ni in the second metal element is 0 .. More preferably, 46 ≦ c ≦ 0.50. When the atomic ratio c is in such a range, a layered O 3 type crystal structure can be more easily formed, the capacity can be increased, and the average voltage can be increased. By stabilizing the composition of the metal oxide, deterioration of the positive electrode active material can be easily suppressed even if charge and discharge are repeated.
The atomic ratio d of Mn in the second metal element is 0.27 ≦ d <0.40. The atomic ratio d is 0. If it is less than 27 , the average voltage is lowered and the conductivity of the metal oxide is also easily lowered, so the capacity is lowered. In addition, since the resistance of the charge / discharge reaction is high and side reactions such as decomposition of the electrolyte are likely to occur, the cycle characteristics are also likely to deteriorate. When the atomic ratio d is 0.40 or more, in addition to the difficulty in stabilizing the composition of the metal oxide, impurities such as by-products are easily mixed, and thus the capacity is reduced and the metal oxide at the time of charge and discharge As a result, the cycle characteristics are also degraded.
Examples of the element M other than Ti, Ni and Mn among the second metal elements include transition metal elements and typical metal elements other than alkali metals. Among the elements M, examples of transition metal elements include Sc, Y, lanthanoids, actinoids, Zr, V, Cr, W, Fe, Ru, Co, Cu and the like. Among the elements M, examples of typical metal elements include, in addition to alkaline earth metal elements such as Ca and Mg, Zn, Al, Sn, Sb and the like. The metal oxide may contain one kind of element M, or may contain two or more kinds in combination.
From the viewpoint of easily forming a layered O 3 type crystal structure, the atomic ratio e of the element M in the second metal element is preferably 0 ≦ e ≦ 0.10. 0 ≦ e ≦ 0.05. It is also good.
Preferred metal oxides are, for example, of the following formula:
Na a Ti b Ni c Mn d M e O 2 ± α
(Wherein, b + c + d + e = 1.00, α is an oxygen deficient amount or an oxygen excess amount. The elements M, a, b, c, d and e are the same as above). α is, for example, 0 ≦ α ≦ 0.05.
The positive electrode active material may contain one or more of the above-described metal oxides. In addition to the above-mentioned metal oxides, known materials which reversibly occlude and release sodium ions may be contained. However, from the viewpoint of easily securing high capacity and / or excellent cycle characteristics, the ratio of the above-mentioned metal oxide in the positive electrode active material is preferably, for example, 90% by mass to 100% by mass. The active material may be composed only of the above metal oxide.
