Description
The present invention relates to an image processing apparatus that performs image formation by an electrophotographic process using laser light, and a control method thereof.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, so-called electrophotographic image forming apparatuses such as a laser beam printer and a copying machine that form an image by scanning a laser beam on an image carrier are known. In general, an electrophotographic image forming apparatus forms an image through a plurality of processes such as charging, exposure, development, transfer, fixing, and cleaning.
Here, a general electrophotographic process will be described. First, the charging unit uniformly charges the photoconductor as the image carrier, and then the exposure unit exposes the photoconductor to a laser beam corresponding to the image signal, thereby forming an electrostatic latent image on the photoconductor. At this time, the direction in which the laser beam scans is referred to as a main scanning direction, and an electrostatic latent image is formed while sequentially rotating the photosensitive member in a sub-scanning direction orthogonal to the main scanning direction. Thereafter, the developing means develops the electrostatic latent image on the photoconductor to form a toner image on the photoconductor. At that time, after the developing unit charges the toner, the toner is supplied to the photoreceptor using a developing roller that rotates at a substantially constant speed, and the toner is attached to the electrostatic latent image to form a toner image. Then, the toner image on the photosensitive member is transferred onto a recording medium and fixed to form an image. The transfer residual toner remaining on the photoreceptor is collected by a cleaning unit.
In such an image forming apparatus, there is a problem that horizontal stripes (hereinafter referred to as banding) due to shading occur in an image formed due to various causes, and the quality of the image is significantly impaired.
For example, when the rotational speed of the photoconductor varies, the interval at which the exposure unit performs main scanning on the photoconductor (hereinafter referred to as a scan interval) varies, and banding occurs. When the rotational speed of the photosensitive member is high, the scanning interval becomes large, so that the exposure amount per unit area is reduced. Accordingly, the image formed at this time becomes lighter than the density of the image originally intended to be formed. In addition, when the rotational speed of the photosensitive member is low, the scanning interval becomes small, so that the exposure amount per unit area increases. Accordingly, the image formed at this time becomes darker than the density of the image originally intended to be formed.
As another example, banding may occur when the rotation speed of the developing roller varies. When the rotation speed of the developing roller is low, less toner is supplied. As a result, less toner adheres to the electrostatic latent image, and the formed image becomes lighter than the density of the image originally desired to be formed. Further, when the rotation speed of the developing roller is high, more toner is supplied. As a result, more toner adheres to the electrostatic latent image, and the formed image becomes darker than the density of the image originally intended to be formed.
Accordingly, a method for correcting the exposure amount based on the reading result of the image formed on the intermediate transfer belt is disclosed. (Patent Document 1)
However, although the occurrence of banding varies depending on the gradation of the input image, the method described in Patent Document 1 corrects the image without considering the gradation of the input image. Therefore, appropriate correction according to the gradation of the input image cannot be performed, and banding may remain.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to appropriately perform a correction process according to the gradation of an input image to suppress a banding and obtain a good image.
In order to solve the above problems, the present invention is an image processing apparatus for forming an image using a device that periodically moves by electrophotography , and controls image formation by the device based on image data. Based on the phase acquired by the acquisition means, the phase acquisition means for acquiring the rotation direction phase in the device , wherein the processing target line in the image data is imaged via the device , Refer to correction table acquisition means for acquiring a correction table used for correcting the gradation of the processing target line in the image data from a plurality of correction tables corresponding to different phases, and the correction table acquired by the correction table acquisition means. , according to the gradation of the target pixel in the processing object line, correcting the tone of the pixel of interest corrected And having a stage.
As described above, according to the present invention, it is possible to appropriately perform the correction process according to the gradation of the input image and suppress the banding to obtain a good image.

The image forming process has been described above.
In an image forming apparatus that forms an image using the electrophotographic method as described above, banding occurs due to various causes. Here, banding caused by the developing roller will be described in detail. Hereinafter, the symbols a, b, c, and d associated with each image forming unit and the configuration of each image forming unit are omitted. For example, the image forming unit 100 indicates
In the developing process, it is desirable that the amount of toner supplied to the photosensitive drum 1001 by the developing
However, the toner supply amount may fluctuate due to various causes in the developing roller.
For example, there is a deviation of the rotation axis of the developing roller. FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram showing the deviation of the rotation axis of the developing roller. 2A shows a state where the developing roller surface and the photoreceptor surface are far away, and FIG. 2B shows a state where the developing roller surface and the photoreceptor surface are close. When there is a deviation in the rotation axis of the developing roller, the state of FIG. 2A and the state of FIG. 2B are alternately repeated in synchronization with the rotation cycle of the developing roller. As a result, the amount of toner supplied from the developing roller to the photosensitive member decreases in the former and increases in the latter.
Another example is uneven rotation speed of the developing roller. The uneven rotation speed is caused by uneven speed of the motor that drives the developing roller, a defective gear that connects the developing roller and the motor, or the like. The amount of toner supplied from the developing roller to the photoreceptor increases when the rotation speed of the developing roller is high and decreases when the rotation speed is low.
As described above, due to various causes in the developing roller, the density of the image changes due to the change in the toner supply amount, and banding occurs.
In this embodiment, banding correction processing is performed for banding that occurs in synchronization with the rotation period of the developing roller. At this time, since the banding characteristics differ depending on the gradation of the input image data, correction processing corresponding to the gradation is performed.
The banding correction process will be described below. FIG. 3 is a block diagram showing a configuration for performing banding correction processing.

Hereinafter, the banding correction process will be described in detail. The banding correction process performed by the present embodiment includes two processes: a correction table generation process and a corrected image data generation process.
(3) Correction table generation process First, the correction
In step S401, patch formation processing is performed.
FIG. 6 is a schematic diagram of a patch. The patch is composed of a plurality of solid portions having different gradations. In the patch shown in FIG. 5, solid portions having five different gradations are formed. Each solid portion is a rectangular image expressed with uniform gradation, and the length in the sub-scanning direction is designed to be longer than five times the cycle of the developing roller. Note that the length in the sub-scanning direction is not limited to five times or more the period of the developing roller. What is necessary is just to determine suitably according to the correction | amendment precision requested | required, the allowable processing time, and the memory capacity to be used.
The patch forming process is performed by primarily transferring the toner image formed by the image forming unit 100 to the
In step S402, patch reading processing is performed.
The
As the
The following step S403 and step S404 are performed for each solid section constituting the patch.
In step S403, density profile calculation processing is performed.
FIG. 7A shows an example of the density profile calculated in step S403. First, the banding
In step S404, a banding waveform calculation process is performed.
First, as shown in FIG. 7B, the banding
Further, smoothing processing and tilt correction processing in the sub-scanning direction are performed on the calculated banding waveform.
The smoothing process in the sub-scanning direction is a process for removing high-frequency banding components. A high-frequency banding component is likely to emphasize density unevenness when banding is not reproducible or when a phase shift occurs in correction processing. Therefore, it is preferable to remove high-frequency banding components by smoothing processing.
In the inclination correction process, the inclination of a straight line connecting the value of the start point (phase is 0) and the end point (phase is 2π) of the banding waveform is obtained, and the banding waveform is corrected so that the inclination becomes zero. As a result, the two values at the start point and the end point become equal. Since the correction table created based on the banding waveform is repeatedly used in the corrected image data generation process described below, it is preferable to perform an inclination correction process to ensure continuity between the start point and end point of the banding waveform.
The following steps S405, S406, and S407 are repeated for each phase of the developing roller. Here, the phases to be processed are all phases held by the banding waveform calculated based on the density detected by the
In step S405, banding characteristic acquisition processing is performed.

(3) Corrected image data generation processing Next, corrected image data generation processing is performed. FIG. 5 is a flowchart illustrating the corrected image data generation process.
In step S51, image data input processing is performed.

In step S52, gradation correction processing is performed.

In step S53, halftone image data generation processing is performed.
The image processing unit 1105 performs normal gamma correction processing and halftone processing on the color image data that has been subjected to gradation correction processing in step S52, thereby generating halftone image data. Then, the image processing unit 1105 outputs the generated halftone image data to the image formation control unit 113.
Here, details of the gradation correction processing performed in step S52 will be described.
In the tone correction processing of this embodiment, batch processing is performed on pixel groups (hereinafter referred to as lines) having the same position in the sub-scanning direction in the color image data of each color. Then, the process for each line is repeated for the number of pixels in the sub-scanning direction. For example, when the color image data of each color is 1000 pixels in the vertical (sub-scanning direction) and 800 pixels in the horizontal (main scanning direction), batch processing is performed on one line of 800 pixels in the horizontal direction, and this is processed for 1000 lines. repeat.
In step S521, a correction phase calculation process is performed.

In step S522, correction table acquisition processing is performed.

In step S523, image data correction processing is performed.
The processing here is performed for each pixel in the processing target line.
The corrected image
As described above, the processing from step S521 to step S523 is repeated for all the lines of the color image data of each color. When the process is completed for all lines, the corrected image data generation process is terminated.
As described above, according to the present embodiment, banding waveforms of a plurality of different gradations are acquired, and a gradation correction table for each phase of the developing roller is generated. Then, gradation correction is performed on all pixels based on the phase of the corresponding developing roller and the gradation of color image data representing the pixels. Thereby, appropriate banding correction can be performed according to the gradation, and a good output image can be formed.
In this embodiment, the processing for correcting the banding generated in synchronization with the rotation cycle of the developing roller has been described. However, the banding to be corrected is not limited to this. If the banding is caused by a device having periodicity and is generated in synchronization with the device phase, appropriate banding correction can be performed by performing the same processing as in this embodiment.

<実施例2>
<Example 2>
In the first embodiment, the method of generating the correction table corresponding to the input gradation for each rotation phase of the developing roller has been described. In the second embodiment, an example in which a correction table suitable for the rotation phase of the developing roller is selected from a plurality of correction tables prepared in advance will be described.
FIG. 13 shows a configuration for performing banding correction processing in the second embodiment. The same components as those in the first embodiment are denoted by the same reference numerals.
The correction table storage unit 1106 according to the second embodiment stores a plurality of correction tables in advance. FIG. 12 shows a correction table held in advance by the correction table storage unit 1106 according to the second embodiment. The correction table held in the correction table storage unit 1106 determines the correction gradation based on the input gradation and the density fluctuation ΔD. The density fluctuation ΔD is an error between the target density when outputting and the density when outputting. The density fluctuation ΔD is a constant interval. Here, when ΔD = 1.0, ΔD = 0.9,..., .DELTA.D = −1.0, each correction table is held. .
In the second embodiment, a banding waveform at a gradation k is calculated by forming and detecting a patch composed of a solid portion of a certain gradation k. Then, the density fluctuation ΔD at each rotation phase in the developing roller is calculated, and a correction table corresponding to each rotation phase is selected based on the calculated density fluctuation ΔD.
Hereinafter, the banding correction process in this embodiment will be described. The banding correction process includes two processes, a correction table selection process and a corrected image data generation process. Since the corrected image data generation process is the same as the corrected image data generation process in the first embodiment, only the correction table selection process will be described.
■ Correction Table Selection Process The correction table selection process is a process for determining a correction table corresponding to each rotation phase in the developing roller. FIG. 10 shows a flowchart of the correction table selection process in this embodiment.
In step S1001, patch formation processing is performed.
FIG. 11 is a schematic diagram of the patch forming process. The processing here is performed in substantially the same manner as step S401 in the first embodiment, but differs from step S401 in that the patch to be formed is composed of only a solid portion of gradation k. In the patch formation process, the roller
In step S1002, patch reading processing is performed.
The
In step S1003, density profile calculation processing is performed.
This process is performed in the same manner as step S403 in the first embodiment. First, the banding
In step S1004, a banding waveform calculation process is performed.
This process is performed in the same manner as step S404 in the first embodiment. The banding waveform is calculated by cutting out the density profile calculated in step S1103 by the banding
In step S1005, correction table selection processing is performed.
First, the correction table selection unit 1107 selects one of all phases that has not been subjected to the correction table selection processing, and sets it as a processing target phase. Next, the output density in the selected processing target phase is acquired from the banding waveform at the gradation k generated by the banding
The correction table selection process in the second embodiment has been described above. After the above processing, the same processing as the corrected image data generation processing in the first embodiment is performed, and the banding correction is completed.
In the second embodiment, a correction table corresponding to each rotation phase is selected from a plurality of correction tables held in advance based on banding that occurs when a solid portion of gradation k is printed. This
The number of steps for generating the correction table can be reduced, and banding can be more easily suppressed. Further, since the patch to be formed is simple, the toner to be used can be reduced, and the
