(Background of the Invention)
The present invention generally relates to a power line communication system that transmits ballast dimming levels to an electronic ballast.
The present invention particularly relates to a power line communication system that transmits ballast dimming levels to an electronic ballast with improved noise immunity.
Electronic ballasts are used to generate and control the amount of power consumed by gas discharge lamps. The ballast dimming level determines the power output of the electronic ballast and thus the light quantity of the lamp. The ballast dimming level is communicated to a power line receiver associated with the electronic ballast. The power line receiver receives a ballast control signal having dimming level information and generates a dimming level signal corresponding to the desired ballast dimming level. This dimming level signal then causes the electronic ballast to generate an AC lamp signal to the lamp according to the desired dimming level. In this way, the user can control the power consumed by the lamp.
In many cases, it is preferable to communicate the dimming level of the lamp through an AC power signal that provides power to the electronic ballast. A power line controller can be used to insert information on the AC power signal that conveys the desired dimming level to the power line receiver. The power line controller generates a ballast control signal and inserts the ballast control signal into the AC power signal. The power line receiver then extracts this information from the AC power signal and generates an appropriate dimming level signal. This dimming level signal is generally transmitted to an inverter control circuit that controls the amount of power generated by the ballast to the lamp.
There are several prior art solutions that convey information to an electronic ballast via an AC power line, including those that use power line modems, high frequency injection codes, and line voltage modulation codes. However, the equipment required to insert information into an AC power signal and retrieve that information with a ballast is expensive. These systems are also particularly sensitive to noise and require a ballast control signal with a high signal level to convey the desired ballast dimming level over the power line. This is especially true when the system communicates simultaneously with multiple electronic ballasts.
Therefore, there is a need for a power line communication system that inserts information into an AC power signal that is more cost effective and more resistant to noise.
(Summary of the Invention)
The present invention relates to a power line communication system for transmitting a ballast dimming level to an electronic ballast by an AC power line. The system includes a power line controller and a power line receiver connected to an AC power line. The power line controller generates a ballast control signal and inserts this signal into the AC power signal transmitted over the AC power line. The power line receiver receives the AC power signal, extracts a ballast control signal from the AC power signal, and generates a dimming level signal corresponding to a desired ballast dimming level. The power line receiver may be integrated with the electronic ballast or may be an independent device that communicates with the electronic ballast.
The power line controller according to the present invention includes a signal pattern circuit that generates a ballast control signal. This ballast control signal corresponds to a predetermined communication code for transmitting the dimming level to the electronic ballast. This communication code is just one way of representing the dimming level of the electronic ballast, which allows the power line receiver to convert this information into an appropriate dimming level signal. The desired ballast dimming level delivered by the power line controller is embedded in the ballast control signal as a signal pattern associated with this desired ballast dimming level.
In order to insert the ballast control signal into the AC power signal, the power line controller comprises a transformer connected to the signal pattern circuit. The secondary winding of this transformer is connected in series with the AC power line and inserts a ballast control signal into the AC power signal.
This AC power signal is transmitted to the electronic ballast. In order to extract the ballast control signal from the AC power signal, the power line receiver includes a resonant circuit connected in series with the AC power line. The resonant circuit is tuned to pass the ballast control signal and remove the AC power signal. Then, the dimming level detection circuit detects the signal pattern of the ballast control signal and generates a dimming level signal corresponding to the desired ballast dimming level.
(Detailed description of the invention)
Referring first to FIG. 1A, the power
In order to control the
The power
Referring now to FIGS. 1A and 1B, for example,
The bandwidth is generally defined as a frequency range in which a frequency signal component of a response curve of a signal or a circuit is larger than an amplitude threshold value. The standard amplitude threshold that defines the bandwidth is typically half the maximum value of the signal, or -3 dB. However, the meaning of the bandwidth of the present application is not limited to the case where the threshold value is half of the maximum value, that is, -3 dB. The bandwidth should correspond to a particular application of the present invention. For example, if the
1A and 1B again, the
Next, FIGS. 2 and 3 show the operation of an embodiment of the
For example, the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 of the
In order to generate a series of high-
The primary winding 50 of the transformer TX_1 is connected to the
For example, a DC filter Cb may be coupled between the
In order to insert the
In the embodiment shown in the figure, the
In any case, the
On the other hand, if the power line receiver does not include a device that converts the digital format of the dimming
When the dimming
Next, FIG. 1B, FIG. 4A, and FIG. 4B illustrate the operation of one embodiment of the
As described above, the
The dimming
The dimming level signal 72 is transmitted to an
