Description
The present invention relates to a microlens sheet, a backlight unit using the microlens sheet, and a display device having the backlight unit.
In recent years, liquid crystal display devices using TFT liquid crystal panels and STN liquid crystal panels have been commercialized mainly in color notebook PCs (personal computers) in the OA field, for example.
Such a liquid crystal display device employs a so-called backlight system in which a light source is disposed on the back side of the liquid crystal panel and the liquid crystal panel is illuminated with light from the light source.
The backlight units used in this type of backlight system can be broadly divided into multiple light sources such as cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) within a flat light guide plate made of acrylic resin with excellent light transmission. There are a “light guide plate light guide method” (so-called edge light method) and a “direct type method” that does not use a light guide plate.
As a liquid crystal display device on which a light guide plate light guide type backlight unit is mounted, for example, the one shown in FIG. 16 is generally known. As shown in FIG. 16, a
Recently, as shown in FIG. 17, a prism film (prism layer) 74 having a light condensing function is provided between the
However, in the apparatus illustrated in FIG. 16, since the control of the viewing angle depends only on the diffusibility of the
Further, in the apparatus using the prism film illustrated in FIG. 17, two prism films are required, so that not only the light amount is greatly reduced due to absorption of the film, but also the cost is increased due to an increase in the number of members. It was.
On the other hand, in the direct type, a display device such as a large liquid crystal TV in which the light guide plate is difficult to use is used.
As a direct liquid crystal display device, a device illustrated in FIG. 18 is generally known. As shown in FIG. 18, a
In order to increase the brightness, a brightness enhancement film 86 (Brightness Enhancement Film: BEF, a registered trademark of 3M USA) is disposed on the
BEF is a film in which unit prisms having a triangular cross section are periodically arranged in one direction on a transparent member. This prism has a larger size (pitch) than the wavelength of light. BEF collects light from “off-axis” and directs this light “on-axis” to the viewer, either “redirect” or “recycle”. To do. “On-axis” is a direction that coincides with the visual direction of the observer, and is generally on the normal direction side with respect to the display screen. BEF increases on-axis brightness by reducing off-axis brightness in this way.
When the repetitive array structure of prisms is arranged in only one direction, only the direction change or recycling in the parallel direction is possible. In order to control the luminance of the display light in the horizontal and vertical directions, two sheets are combined and used so that the parallel directions of the prism groups are substantially orthogonal to each other.
The adoption of BEF allows display designers to achieve the desired on-axis brightness while reducing power consumption.
A display employing a luminance control member having a repetitive array structure of prisms represented by BEF is disclosed in many patent documents as exemplified in
In the optical sheet using the BEF as a brightness control member as described above, the light from the light source is refracted and emitted at a controlled angle, thereby controlling the light intensity in the visual direction of the observer. can do.
However, at the same time, there is an unexpected light beam that is wasted in the lateral direction without proceeding in the visual direction of the observer. As shown by a broken line B in FIG. 21, the light intensity distribution emitted from the optical sheet using BEF has the highest light intensity when the observer's visual direction, that is, the angle with respect to the visual direction is 0 ° (corresponding to the on-axis direction). However, a small light intensity peak also occurs around ± 90 ° from the front. That is, there is a problem that light (side lobes) emitted from the lateral direction is increased. A luminance distribution having such a light intensity peak is not desirable. As shown by the solid line A in FIG. 21, a smooth luminance distribution having no light intensity peak around ± 90 ° is preferable. On the other hand, when only the on-axis luminance is excessively improved, the peak width of the luminance distribution curve is remarkably narrowed, resulting in an extreme luminance change. In order to realize a smooth profile, it is necessary to install another diffusion film on the prism sheet. This diffusion film is provided with a protective layer for protecting the prism sheet on the surface on the prism sheet side.
As described above, generally, a plurality of optical sheets using BEF are overlapped and used. However, if the number of optical sheets is large, the cost increases, the display assembly work becomes complicated, and problems such as miniaturization and thinning are hindered due to the influence of dust between the optical sheets.
Further, as market needs for liquid crystal display devices, there is a strong demand for reduction of environmental load by reducing power consumption, cost, and resource usage while maintaining display quality. Moreover, the panel transmittance of the liquid crystal panel of the color liquid crystal display device is much lower than that of the monochrome liquid crystal display device, and it is essential to improve the brightness of the backlight unit in order to obtain low power consumption of the device itself. .
Also, by driving the light source area by area, the light source where the bright image is displayed is emitted, and the light source where the dark image is displayed is turned off or the amount of light emitted is reduced, resulting in a large difference in brightness. Therefore, the contrast can be increased. Furthermore, if a light source capable of adjusting the emitted color is used, the color of the emitted light is adjusted and the displayable color range of the display device is expanded, so that the quality of the display image can be improved.
Further, as described above, it is possible to reduce the power consumption of the backlight unit and the display device because it is possible to reduce the driving power of the light source by turning off unnecessary light sources or reducing the light emission amount as described above. It becomes possible.
In order to reduce power consumption and cost, it is conceivable to reduce the number of parts. However, when a conventional prism lens is used, it is necessary to provide a diffusion film between the lens sheet and the liquid crystal panel in order to reduce the influence of the side lobe, which results in a loss of light, an increase in cost, and an increase in environmental load. Cause. Thus, conventionally, it has not been possible to sufficiently satisfy all the above-described requirements.
Further, in the conventional prism lens, when the area division driving of the light source is performed, the above-mentioned light / dark boundary and light leakage occur, and it has not been possible to sufficiently satisfy all the requirements.
An object of the present invention is a microlens having high light utilization efficiency, no side lobe, a desired light distribution, and no light / dark boundary or light leakage when a light source is driven by area division. It is an object of the present invention to provide a backlight and a display device having a large brightness improvement effect using the microlens sheet.

In the following, the upper direction in FIG. 1 is referred to as an observer side F, and the lower direction is referred to as a back side.

Here, examples of the light source 41 used in the present invention include the following.
The light source 41 is a linear light source, and a thin rod-shaped cold cathode tube is used for illuminating the liquid crystal display panel. Here, a cold cathode tube is used as the light source 41. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and any linear light source may be used.
Examples of the light source 41 include a normal fluorescent tube, a cold cathode tube, a hot cathode tube, an external electrode tube, a mercury-less rare gas fluorescent lamp, a light emitting diode (hereinafter referred to as an LED) arranged in a line, a semiconductor laser, and the like. In particular, a cold cathode tube, an external electrode tube, or a light emitting diode arranged in a row is preferable.
Also, a cylindrical or prismatic transparent light guide having a length equivalent to the parallel groove of the light guide plate is used, and an LED light source in which LEDs are arranged on the top and bottom surfaces of the light guide is used instead of the light source. Also good. Such an LED light source can emit LED light from the side surface of the light guide by entering LED light from the top and bottom surfaces of the light guide.
In the present invention, the distance between the centers of adjacent line light sources is preferably 15 mm to 150 mm, and more preferably 20 mm to 60 mm. By setting the above distance to the above range, the power consumption of the direct
In the above aspects, the distance between the centers of adjacent line light sources may be uniform in all locations or may be partially changed. Here, the case of partial change is, for example, a case where the distance between the point light sources is narrowed in the central portion of the direct type backlight device.
The line light source and the diffusion plate 25 are installed such that the shortest distance between the incident surface of the diffusion plate 25 and the center position of the line light source is 2 mm to 30 mm. More preferably, the dimension of the shortest distance between the incident surface of the diffusion plate 25 and the center position of the line light source is 5 mm to 25 mm.
The line light source preferably performs area division driving for each area.
By performing area division driving, the line light source where the bright image is displayed emits light, and the line light source where the dark image is displayed is turned off or the amount of light emitted is reduced to increase the difference between light and dark. Can be increased.
Furthermore, as described above, it is possible to reduce the driving power of the line light source by turning off unnecessary line light sources or reducing the amount of light emission, so that the power consumption of the backlight unit and the display device is reduced. It becomes possible.
When the light source 41 is a line light source, the number of the line light sources is not particularly limited. For example, when the direct
The light source 41 is not limited to a linear light source, and may be a point light source, and is preferably an LED that has a material structure that does not use mercury and that has good light emission efficiency.

In this system, pseudo white light emission can be realized simply by coating or covering the surface of a single color LED element, for example, a sealing glass, so that it can be produced by a simple manufacturing method.
The light source 41 used in the present invention is not limited to the above-described one, and may be one in which one single-color LED element is covered with at least one kind of phosphor. As a result, the color tone of light emission can be further expanded.

図3は、単色に発光する単色LED(赤色LED54、緑色LED55、青色LED56)を組み合わせて点光源ユニットとして構成したものである。

Further, the point light source is not limited to the above-described LED. For example, as shown in FIG. 4, the light of a monochromatic semiconductor laser (

Next, an arrangement mode of a plurality of point light sources will be described.
FIG. 5 is a plan view schematically showing the arrangement of a plurality of point
In the above-described aspect, the distance between the point
In the present invention, the distance between the centers of adjacent point light source units is preferably 15 mm to 150 mm, and more preferably 20 mm to 60 mm. By setting the above distance to the above range, the power consumption of the direct type backlight device can be reduced, the assembly of the device can be facilitated, and the luminance unevenness of the light emitting surface can be suppressed.
The dimension of the shortest distance between the center position of the point

The light incident on the diffusion plate 25 is diffused by the uneven structure of the incident surface of the diffuser plate 25, the refractive index difference between the diffusion region inside the diffuser plate 25 and the transparent resin, and the uneven structure of the exit surface of the diffuser plate 25.
The diffusion plate 25 is formed by dispersing a light diffusion region in a transparent resin.
As the transparent resin, a thermoplastic resin, a thermosetting resin, or the like can be used. For example, a polycarbonate resin, an acrylic resin, a fluorine acrylic resin, a silicone acrylic resin, an epoxy acrylate resin, a polystyrene resin, a cycloolefin polymer , Methylstyrene resin, fluorene resin, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene, acrylonitrile polystyrene copolymer, and the like can be used.
また、樹脂からなる透明粒子としては、アクリル粒子、スチレン粒子、スチレンアクリル粒子及びその架橋体、メラミン−ホルマリン縮合物の粒子、PTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)、PFA(ペルフルオロアルコキシ樹脂)、FEP(テトラフルオロエチレン−ヘキサフルオロプロピレン共重合体)、PVDF(ポリフルオロビニリデン)、及びETFE(エチレン−テトラフルオロエチレン共重合体)等のフッ素ポリマー粒子、シリコーン樹脂粒子などを用いることができる。
The light diffusion region is preferably made of light diffusion particles. This is because suitable diffusion performance can be easily obtained.
As the light diffusing particles, transparent particles made of an inorganic oxide or a resin can be used. As the transparent particles made of an inorganic oxide, for example, silica, alumina or the like can be used. The transparent particles made of resin include acrylic particles, styrene particles, styrene acrylic particles and crosslinked products thereof, melamine-formalin condensate particles, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), PFA (perfluoroalkoxy resin), FEP (tetrafluoroethylene). Fluoropolymer particles such as fluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer), PVDF (polyfluorovinylidene), and ETFE (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer), silicone resin particles, and the like can be used.
Moreover, you may use combining 2 or more types of transparent particles from the transparent particle described previously. Furthermore, the size and shape of the transparent particles are not particularly defined.
When the light diffusing particles are used as the light diffusing region, the thickness of the diffusing plate 25 is preferably 0.1 to 5 mm.
When the thickness of the diffusion plate 25 is 0.1 to 5 mm, optimum diffusion performance and brightness can be obtained. On the other hand, if the thickness is less than 0.1 mm, the diffusion performance is insufficient, and if it exceeds 5 mm, the amount of resin is large and the luminance is reduced due to absorption.
In the case where a thermoplastic resin is used as the transparent resin, air bubbles may be used as the light diffusion region. The internal surface of the bubble formed inside the thermoplastic resin causes diffused reflection of light, and a light diffusing function equivalent to or higher than that when light diffusing particles are dispersed can be expressed. Therefore, it becomes possible to make the film thickness of the diffusion plate 25 thinner.
Examples of the diffusion plate 25 include white PET and white PP. White PET is obtained by dispersing a resin incompatible with PET, fillers such as titanium oxide (TiO2) and barium sulfate (BaSO4) in PET, and then stretching the PET by a biaxial stretching method. It is formed by generating bubbles around the filler.
Note that the diffusion plate 25 made of thermoplastic resin only needs to be stretched in at least one axial direction. This is because if it is stretched in at least one axial direction, bubbles can be generated around the filler.
Examples of the thermoplastic resin include polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene-2, 6-naphthalate, polypropylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate, cyclohexanedimethanol copolymer polyester resin, isophthalic acid copolymer polyester resin, and spiroglycol copolymer polyester. Resins, polyester resins such as fluorene copolymer polyester resins, polyolefin resins such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethylpentene, and alicyclic olefin copolymer resins, acrylic resins such as polymethyl methacrylate, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyamide, polyether , Polyester amide, polyetherester, polyvinyl chloride, cycloolefin polymer, acrylonitrile polystyrene copolymer Copolymers to the body and these as a component, or the like can be used a mixture of these resins are not particularly limited.
When bubbles are used as the light diffusion region, the thickness of the diffusion plate 25 is preferably 25 to 500 μm.
When the thickness of the diffusing plate 25 is less than 25 μm, it is not preferable because the sheet is insufficiently squeezed and wrinkles are easily generated in the manufacturing process and display. In addition, when the thickness of the diffusion plate 25 exceeds 500 μm, there is no particular problem in the optical performance, but it is difficult to process into a roll shape due to increased rigidity, and the slit cannot be formed. Since the merit of the thinness obtained becomes small, it is not preferable.
Furthermore, an uneven shape (not shown) may be formed on the surface of the diffusion plate 25. With this uneven shape, the light emitted from the diffusion plate 25 can be diffused to further improve the uniformity of the light.
In this case, the concavo-convex shape is preferably a prism shape or a lens shape having a center line average roughness Ra of 3 μm to 1,000 μm. When the concavo-convex shape is a prism shape, the prism shape is preferably a polygon, and the prism apex angle is preferably 40 ° to 170 °, and the prism pitch is preferably 20 μm to 700 μm.
The prism shape may be a pyramid shape or a truncated pyramid shape. The uneven shape described above may be changed in accordance with the illuminance or luminance of light incident on the uneven shape. For example, in the region where the illuminance or luminance of light incident on the uneven shape is large, the prism tops described above may be used. You may make a corner small.
The uneven shape may be formed on a matte surface such as a satin finish.
Furthermore, the total light transmittance of the diffusion plate 25 in this case is preferably 40% or more and 98% or less, the haze is 20% to 100%, and the water absorption is 0.25% or less.
When the total light transmittance is less than 40%, the amount of light transmitted through the diffusion plate 25 is small, so that the loss of light increases and the problem of darkening occurs.
When the haze is less than 20%, the diffusion performance of the diffusion plate 25 is insufficient, so that there is a problem in that the light is not uniformized and brightness unevenness occurs.
When the water absorption rate exceeds 0.25%, there arises a problem that warpage occurs due to the diffusion plate 25 absorbing moisture from the outside air.
The diffusion plate 25 described above can be manufactured using a known technique such as a co-extrusion molding method, an injection molding method, a hot press method, a cast polymerization method, or the like.
In addition, as a method of giving the concavo-convex shape to the diffusing plate 25, during the formation of the diffusing plate 25 by the above-described coextrusion forming method and injection molding method, pressure is applied to the mold for shaping the concavo-convex shape. Uneven shape can be transferred.
Alternatively, the incident surface or the exit surface of the diffusion plate 25 can be molded using a radiation curable resin such as a UV curable resin. For example, after the diffusion plate 25 is formed as a plate-like member by a coextrusion method, an uneven shape can be formed by UV molding on the incident surface or the emission surface of the diffusion plate 25.
Alternatively, a film having a concavo-convex shape may be formed as a separate body, and the film having the concavo-convex shape and the diffusion plate 25 having no concavo-convex shape may be bonded to each other via a bonding layer made of an adhesive or an adhesive material. .
ここで透光性フィルムとしては、PET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)、PP(ポリプロピレン)、PC(ポリカーボネート)PMMA(ポリメチルメタクリレート)、ベンジルメタクリレートやMS樹脂、その他のアクリル系樹脂、あるいはCOP(シクロオレフィンポリマー)等の光学的に透明な部材を使用するのが好ましい。
またはPET(ポリエチレンテレフタレート)、PC(ポリカーボネート)、PMMA(ポリメチルメタクリレート)、COP(シクロオレフィンポリマー)、PAN(ポリアクリロニトリル共重合体)、AS(アクリロニトリルスチレン共重合体)等を用いて、当該技術分野では良く知られている押出成形法、射出成型法、あるいは熱プレス成型法によって形成してもよい。
The above-described method for producing a film having a concavo-convex shape uses a UV or radiation curable resin on the translucent film (the type is not particularly limited as long as the resin includes a material curable by UV or radiation). It may be molded. Here, as the translucent film, PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PP (polypropylene), PC (polycarbonate) PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), benzyl methacrylate, MS resin, other acrylic resins, or COP (cycloolefin polymer) It is preferable to use an optically transparent member such as.
Alternatively, the technology using PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PC (polycarbonate), PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), COP (cycloolefin polymer), PAN (polyacrylonitrile copolymer), AS (acrylonitrile styrene copolymer), etc. You may form by the extrusion molding method well-known in the field | area, the injection molding method, or the hot press molding method.

Since the
In the conventional prism sheet in which the prisms having a triangular cross section are formed in a stripe shape, light is condensed by a triangular prism structure. Therefore, light is not collected in a direction where the cross section is not triangular, for example, in the same direction as the stripe.
As in the present invention, when the shape of the

When the length L of the longest part of the bottom is less than 5 μm, the influence of the light diffraction phenomenon becomes large, color dispersion occurs, and there is a problem that the viewer side F visually recognizes the color unevenness.

When r / L is less than 0.01, the curvature of the conical apex spherical surface is small, and the side lobe reduction effect is insufficient.
When r / L exceeds 0.6, the curvature of the cone-top spherical surface is large, so that the decrease in light in the front direction (the direction of the emission angle of 0 °) is large, which is not preferable.

For the above-described reason, when a point light source is used as the light source 41 and brightness area division driving is performed, r / L is preferably 0.05 to 0.6.

When the color mixture area becomes excessively large in this way, when viewed from the front, the color mixture area covers most of the point
For the above-described reason, when a point light source is used as the light source 41 and brightness area division driving is performed, r / L is preferably 0.4 to 0.6.
Next, the inclination angle θ of the substantially conical shape for obtaining the high-
When the inclination angle θ is less than 30 degrees, the light deflecting action on the inclined surface having a substantially conical shape is reduced, so that the light collection efficiency is lowered. If the inclination angle θ exceeds 60 degrees, the probability that the light directed toward the observer side F on the inclined surface is totally reflected is excessive, and the light transmitted through the inclined surface is reduced. This is not preferable because the amount of transmitted light is reduced. When the tilt angle is in the range of 40 degrees to 50 degrees, it is possible to generate a sufficient deflection action of the tilted surface and prevent an excessive total reflection action, so that the light utilization efficiency is very high.
The surface of the
When the surface roughness Ra is less than 0.01 μm, the influence of the light diffraction phenomenon is not great and color unevenness occurs due to the fine structure of the surface, which is not preferable.
When the surface roughness Ra exceeds 10 μm, the light scattering effect due to the surface roughness becomes excessive, and therefore the light condensing effect of the light control sheet is reduced, which is not preferable.

By mixing a diffusing agent inside the
In particular, as shown in FIG. 11, it is preferable to form a
また、樹脂からなる透明粒子としては、アクリル粒子、スチレン粒子、スチレンアクリル粒子及びその架橋体、メラミン−ホルマリン縮合物の粒子、PTFE(ポリテトラフルオロエチレン)、PFA(ペルフルオロアルコキシ樹脂)、FEP(テトラフルオロエチレン−ヘキサフルオロプロピレン共重合体)、PVDF(ポリフルオロビニリデン)、及びETFE(エチレン−テトラフルオロエチレン共重合体)等のフッ素ポリマー粒子、シリコーン樹脂粒子などを用いることができる。
As such a diffusing agent, transparent particles made of an inorganic oxide or a resin can be used.
In the case where a thermoplastic resin is used as the transparent resin of the
The

When the distance M between the optical elements is less than 3 μm, color unevenness occurs due to the light diffraction phenomenon caused by the fine structure generated in the flat portion, which is not preferable.
When the distance M between the optical elements exceeds 30 μm, the area of the flat portion between the

As a method of arranging without gaps, the bottom surface is made to be a regular hexagon (FIG. 14A), a square (FIG. 14B), and a regular triangle (FIG. 14C), so that the shape of the bottom surface is substantially the same. Can be arranged. By making the shape of the bottom surface substantially the same, the dimensions and shape of the
In particular, when the bottom surface is a regular hexagon, the shape of the connecting portion between the bottom surfaces is not a straight line, but can be a more complicated zigzag shape, which occurs due to interference between the connecting portion shape and the pixels of the display device It is possible to prevent moiré, which is more preferable.
Further, as shown in FIG. 15, the bottom surfaces may be arranged with no gaps by combining different polygons.
In this case, it is preferable that the

The mold used in the above-described manufacturing method is preferably a diamond cutting tool having a shape substantially the same as that of the
