The present invention relates generally to customer transactions, and more particularly to systems and methods for monitoring consumer behavior and providing secure electronic payments in exchange for goods and services.
Because retail chains consist of low-selling products, retailers always have a cost-effective mechanism for getting consumers to shop at their stores and the efficiency of processing already completed customer transactions. Looking for a cheap and affordable method. Traditionally, the most common method used by retailers to make a customer want to shop at a particular store is to motivate the customer to purchase, which takes the form of a printed discount coupon. It was normal. These coupons were distributed to customers either by direct mail or by a more targeted method based on the customer's past purchasing habits. In addition, when the customer purchases a pre-selected item, the coupon may be distributed to the customer from the store or cash register at the retail store.
Retailers are more efficient ways to get consumers to shop at their stores by identifying regular customers and giving them some kind of purchase incentive for their ongoing patronage I realized that. However, it can be very expensive to implement a system that tracks customer purchase trends to identify regular customers. Furthermore, to improve retail loyalty, it is necessary to identify various consumer demands that exceed demographic characteristics and provide goods that meet these demands, and the process is time consuming. It takes. Unfortunately, the process of analyzing collected consumer data is also expensive and time consuming and has limited applications. While consumer demographic data by region and country can be obtained from Neilson and other agencies regarding consumer product movement, it is too general to be expected and not useful for a particular retailer. They also do not deal with product movement demographics that allow retailers to learn the individual needs and purchasing trends of people who purchase a particular product.
One alternative to traditional loyalty programs that do not require demographic data is to increase sales and customer loyalty through a reward system. For example, the aviation industry uses frequent flyer programs to reward regular customers. In retail sales, “customer” marketing and sales promotion services were attempted. Alternatively, some retailers have tried a program that rewards customers by distributing cards to customers who regularly purchase famous brand items made by a particular manufacturer. Participating retailers use cards to identify customers, record the purchase status of individual brand products, and give points according to the number of brand products purchased. These points are accumulated and prizes are given to card members on a predetermined basis.
Unfortunately, none of these services focus on or meet the demands and profits of modern retailers. For example, many of these existing programs only encourage “brand loyalty” or “retail loyalty” and retailers cannot reward across brands (partner brands) or across retailers. Specifically, retailers cannot use any of these services to offer a discount on Frito Ray snacks to purchasers of Coca Cola products. . In addition, using any of these services, Wendy's (R) franchise owners can purchase a certain number of Wendy's product buyers, for example, free of Jiffy Lube (R) An oil change privilege cannot be given. Furthermore, using any of these services, retailers cannot associate specific customer groups with specific customer demands. For example, in a grocery retailer in the United States, double-income households are busy with time and tend to spend less time shopping and eating. Retail grocery stores are questioning whether these types of shoppers are willing to come to their stores. If there is a system that allows retailers to identify consumers with high health interests and provide incentives to appeal to those consumers' demand for natural and / or health foods, retailers and customers alike You can make a profit. Identifying shoppers who have special dietary demands, such as health problems, and developing sales activities to meet these dietary demands can be particularly advantageous for retailers. . Rather than offering a general grocery product, it may be beneficial to provide a product that appeals to a specific group.
The current loyalty program does not meet the demands of retailers today, as retail customers continue to increase the number of personal computer owners, many of whom use computer network services that provide connectivity to the Internet The situation is getting worse. Some computer sites connected to the World Wide Web have started offering “online” shopping services, and some have proposed sending discount coupons via computer networks. The rich possibilities of sending incentives online are not yet fully realized.
In addition to limiting the development of loyalty programs with the emergence of the World Wide Web, there are many doubts that there may have been ways to increase the number of consumers involved in fraudulent “online” transactions. ing. With the emergence of payment solutions using the Internet, access to personal information by uninvited eavesdroppers has reached an unprecedented scale. Therefore, in order to conduct this type of transaction on the Internet, a security measure that is not available in the conventional transaction processing network is required. This additional requirement is that the communication over the Internet is a private, private phone line service used between traditional “brick and motor” merchants and credit inquiry organizations. This is because it is performed on a communication line that anyone can access without contrast. As an example, FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of a
Compare this to the situation that occurs when online consumers purchase goods or services on the Internet. As shown in FIG. 2, when the
In view of the shortcomings of currently available online transaction processing systems and methods, it is desirable to provide systems and methods that enhance customer convenience and security. It would also be desirable to provide systems and methods that allow merchants to easily aggregate demographic data for use in designing customer loyalty and purchase incentive programs.
The present invention meets the above-described needs by providing a system and method for processing consumer transactions. In the system of the present invention, after a consumer who visits a retail store identifies which product or service to purchase, the merchant's transceiver connected to the point-of-sale (POS) device is connected to the customer's wireless transceiver By sending an identity confirmation signal, the merchant is notified of the payment information. After receiving the customer ID, the merchant's transceiver passes it to the POS device. This POS device collects a customer ID, a merchant ID, and transaction data and creates an approval request. The POS device then sends the data to a transaction processing system (host computer) where the customer's payment method is confirmed. In the case of a payment method that requires approval, an approval request is sent to the payment processing center accordingly. When the settlement processing center approves the transaction, it sends an approval code back to the POS device via the transaction processing system. This system provides a higher level of security than prior art systems because it does not send customer credit or debit card numbers over unsecured links. The system also communicates with the merchant from the customer's wireless transceiver so that their credit card numbers and other payment data are not accessed or misused without permission by malicious retail employees. Increase customer trust. In addition, this system allows customers to specify a specific payment method for a particular retail store in advance or use their wireless transceiver at the merchant's retail store in advance. Since the method can be automatically selected by the payment processing system, the convenience for member customers is much higher.
With this system, merchants can also get unprecedented benefits. Most importantly, with this transaction processing system networked to the merchant's in-store POS device and the merchant's online shopping network, merchants can use this same system to quickly transfer non-cash transactions between physical store customers and online customers. And it can be processed efficiently. In addition, merchants can track purchase history for each customer who uses this transaction processing system and approve payments, so merchants can understand their past purchases (how to buy (actual store or online)). (Unrelated) can provide targeted purchase incentives. In addition, since the transaction processing system works with several different merchants, merchants working with this system combine their incentive programs with those of other participating merchants to provide customer loyalty across multiple merchants. Can be made.
In another aspect, the present invention provides a method for securely processing financial transactions over the Internet or other non-security network. The method includes transmitting a customer ID to a transceiver connected to the customer's computer using the customer's wireless transceiver. The computer identifies the desired product from the merchant's online website and sends the customer ID and product information to the transaction processing system. As in one embodiment, the transaction processing system confirms the selected payment method and sends an approval request to the appropriate payment processing center. When the transaction is approved by the transaction processor, the transaction processor sends an approval code to the online merchant and sends the item to the customer's address. The transaction processing system may not only transmit transaction approvals, but may also transmit unique identity information and other information to related customers without any customer transactions. Other embodiments of the transaction processing system include a system that can send instructions to the seller based on receipt of the customer ID (eg, issue a ticket to the customer, provide access to the customer, etc.).
In yet another aspect, the present invention provides a method for associating customer preferences with a customer ID. For example, if you collect and store a customer ’s favorite meals in a chain of fast food restaurants, when the customer sends their ID to a merchant's transceiver in the fast food restaurant, Even if you don't speak a word, you can order your favorite meals and make payments.
In order to realize the above and other advantages, and in accordance with the purposes of the invention as embodied and broadly described, the present invention provides a system for processing customer transactions. The system includes a pre-configured customer wireless transceiver with a unique customer / sender ID number and a merchant transceiver that captures the customer / sender ID and forwards it to the associated POS device. . The POS device receives transaction data via the input device, and creates an approval request by combining the transaction data with the ID signal received from the reading device. To further increase security, at least a part of the approval request may be encrypted. The POS device transmits the approval request via a communication channel to a transaction processing system including a processor and a customer information database. The customer information database includes a plurality of customer entries having associated transaction processing attributes. The processor receives the approval request, decrypts it (if necessary), and sends it to the payment processing system according to the payment method preselected by the customer. The processor also stores data derived from the transaction entry associated with the customer ID. The above system not only processes transactions but also facilitates the collection and analysis of comprehensive demographic and purchasing data for managing consumer loyalty programs and conducting trend analysis of consumer purchasing trends. These processes involve the CPU manipulating the data bits and holding these bits in a data structure that resides in one or more storage devices. Such a data structure physically organizes a collection of data bits stored in computer memory and represents a particular electrical or magnetic element. These symbolic notations are the means used by those skilled in the art of computer programming and computer structure to most effectively convey the teachings and findings to others skilled in the art.
In this description, a process is generally considered a sequence of steps that a computer executes to obtain a desired result. These processes generally require physical manipulation of physical quantities. Usually, though not necessarily, these quantities take the form of electrical, magnetic, or optical signals capable of being stored, transferred, combined, compared, and otherwise manipulated. Those skilled in the art conventionally refer to these signals as bits, values, elements, symbols, characters, terms, objects, numbers, records, files, and the like. However, these and similar terms must be associated with appropriate physical quantities that can be processed by a computer, and these terms are simply conventional labels that apply to physical quantities that exist in or during computer processing. It must be kept in mind that it is only.
It should also be understood that operations within a computer are often referred to as add, compare, move, etc., all of which are often associated with manual operations performed by a human operator. The operations described herein are machine operations that are performed in cooperation with a human operator or user that interacts with the computer. Machines used to perform the processing of the present invention include general purpose digital computers or other similar processing devices.
Further, it should be understood that the programs, processes, methods, etc. described herein are not related or limited to any particular computer or apparatus.
FIG. 6 shows a detailed view of the
As shown in FIG. 6, the
The second embodiment of the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for securely processing financial transactions over the Internet or other non-security networks. FIG. 7 is a schematic diagram of a system 700 for processing retail transactions other than cash, according to a second embodiment. In addition to the elements shown in FIG. 3, the system 700 of FIG.
The difference between the store (FIG. 3) and the
FIG. 8 is a schematic diagram of an
As shown in FIG. 9, the
In the second embodiment, transactions are processed in a manner very similar to the first embodiment. That is, an online consumer destined for the online consumer's
A third embodiment of the invention relates to a method and apparatus for processing retail transactions other than cash at a store or other similar self-service station. Except that a product database similar to the product database on the online merchant's
In another embodiment, the customer can place an order by phone before arriving at the
In practicing the present invention, various active transceivers and customer transceivers (48 and 50, respectively) can be implemented. For example, a representative of this technique is the TIRIS system available from Texas Instruments Corporation. Details of the digital signature transponder (DST) and TIRIS technology are contained in US Pat. No. 5,541,604 issued to Texas Instruments Deutsche Line Gmbh. The disclosure is expressly incorporated herein by reference. FIG. 10 shows a schematic diagram of a preferred embodiment of a
FIG. 11 is a detailed flowchart showing the operation of the
As shown in FIG. 10,
Other embodiments of
In the above-described embodiment, the customer transceiver that the customer carries as an independent item is used, but the
One embodiment of a
FIG. 12 shows a detailed view of the
According to another embodiment, the merchant's transceiver authenticates payment for goods and services over the Internet, digital information (movies, music, online books, research, etc.) and applications (voice / email, personal calendar, “sport entertainment” Portable devices (such as Palm Pilot®, handheld computers, etc.) that allow the capture and transmission of customer IDs and other security information to authenticate and authorize access to “packages”, golf handicap programs, etc. ) Including a merchant transceiver incorporated in or attachable to. Still other embodiments include merchant portable transceivers that allow sellers (pizza deliverers) to approve transactions from any point. This merchant transceiver includes a
As described above, the preferred embodiment of the
In the preferred embodiment, the
Alternatively, the
In another embodiment of the present invention, a system for connecting an RF transponder reader carried by a customer and an RF transponder associated with a merchant point of sale (POS) terminal or merchant product and A method is provided. In operation, a customer seeking to purchase a retail item or service uses a transponder reader to read a transponder associated with a merchant POS terminal or merchant product. The transponder reader is in communication with the central database. This communication may be wireless. Communication may be, for example, via a wireless telephone network or via a networking protocol such as Bluetooth.
In one embodiment of the invention, the transponder is associated with a data entry method and / or apparatus. This data input device may be such that it can be inserted into the transponder unit, or may be incorporated therein. Alternatively, this data input method may be attached to the same device as the device to which the transponder is attached. For example, if the transponder is attached to a key ring, the data entry method can be associated with the same key ring.
The data input method of the present invention includes inputting data to be read into a data reading device. The data reader includes a means for scanning data to be read, a power source, and a memory for storing the read data. The data to be read includes data associated with the product (s), service (s) or merchant (s). The data to be read may be held on any medium as long as the data reader can read the data. For example, data to be read can be incorporated into an advertisement. This advertisement may be an advertisement for a product or service, or a merchant advertisement. You may place this advertisement in a newspaper, magazine, Internet website, poster, or similar medium.
The data reader may further include means for notifying the customer that the data has been successfully read and stored. For example, light that activates upon successful reading and storage of data, vibration unit, display screen, audible sound (s), audible signal (s), printed receipts, other feedback means or these These combinations may be included in the data reader.
In one embodiment of the invention, the data to be read is associated with a discount for a product or service. The customer uses this data input method to read data associated with the discount. Save this data in association with the transponder. When the customer later purchases the product or service, the transponder reader associated with the merchant's POS terminal reads the customer's transponder and sends data regarding the discount to the merchant's POS terminal. Thus, the discount is applied to the purchase transaction of the product by the customer.
In another embodiment, when data associated with a discount is sent to a merchant POS terminal, this data is matched against corresponding data stored in a central database or merchant database. This corresponding data informs the merchant salesperson and / or the POS terminal for a discount. The merchant database may be a central database at a remote location, a local database (including a database updated at a POS terminal) in the facility, or a distributed database. Also good. In another embodiment, data associated with the discount is stored on the customer's transceiver. This data is transmitted to the merchant's POS terminal, and the merchant's salesperson and / or POS terminal is notified of the discount. For example, a unified product code (UPC) for a product can be stored in the memory of the customer's transceiver or data reader along with the discount amount associated with the product. In this way, the discount amount corresponding to the UPC can be transmitted to the POS terminal of the merchant.
Merchant discounts or proposals may be associated with a customer user profile stored in a central database or merchant database. As described above, in one embodiment of the present invention, an authorization request that includes transaction data is received from a POS terminal by a transaction processing system that includes a customer user profile or information. The transaction processing system determines from the transaction data whether the product or service is subject to a discount or offer associated with the customer's user profile. If the product or service in the transaction is eligible, send the discount or proposal to the POS terminal so that the discount or proposal can be applied to the transaction and notify the customer and / or merchant salesperson To do.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of data may be read by a data reader and stored in association with a transponder. For example, data about products handled by the same manufacturer or distributor can be read. Further, data on a plurality of products handled by the same merchant may be read. In yet another embodiment, the data to be read can be associated with multiple products handled by a single merchant, or multiple products handled by a single manufacturer. Alternatively, data to be read may be associated with a plurality of products by various merchants or manufacturers. For example, it is possible to insert various types of coupons or discount coupons between newspapers. At this time, the data to be read may be associated with all of the various special coupons or discount coupons folded in the newspaper. When the customer reads the data using the data reader, the various special coupons or discount coupons are all stored in association with the transponder. Further, the data to be read may be associated with all of various coupons or discount coupons of a part of the newspaper or the entire newspaper.
When associating the data to be read with the coupons or discount tickets listed on the Internet website, the customer may read the data using a data reader on the computer monitor. Further, the customer may send the data on the website to a computer printer. Thereby, the customer can read the data as a hard copy in which the contents of the website are printed by the data reader.
The data to be read may include a character string, an image, a number, a pattern, or a combination thereof that can be read by the data reader. For example, the data to be read may include a barcode, and the data reader may include a barcode reader. The data reader may be capable of reading two or more types of data. For example, a data reader that can read a barcode, a character string, an image, a number, a pattern, or a combination thereof may be used.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, data to be read may be associated with a URL address of an Internet website. For example, a newspaper article may refer to an Internet website. This Internet website may be referred to for reasons such as the topic in the article, or providing background or more in-depth information about the topic in the article. Data to be read corresponding to the referenced Internet website may be presented. The data to be read may be at the end of the article, in the middle of the article, or in the margin of the article. The customer can read this data with a data reader associated with the customer's transponder. In this embodiment, the transponder reader can be connected to a computer. This computer may be capable of accessing the Internet. When the customer's transponder is read by the transponder reader connected to the computer, data regarding the URL address read in advance may be transmitted to the transponder reader. In this way, the transponder reader transmits the URL address to the computer, and the computer can access the URL address. Then, an Internet website corresponding to the URL address can be presented to the customer.
In yet another embodiment, a coupon or discount ticket may be used to indicate the URL address of an Internet website where a customer can purchase a product or service associated with the coupon or discount ticket. Good. The data to be read can be associated with a coupon or discount and / or URL address. The customer may read the data with a data reader associated with the customer's transponder or store the data in association with the customer's transponder. Alternatively, the transponder may be read by a transponder reader connected to a computer that can access the Internet. Data associated with the URL address is transmitted from the transponder to the transponder reader. In this way, the Internet website corresponding to the URL address can be shown to the customer. The customer can purchase a product or service through its website on the Internet, or can approve the purchase with the customer's transponder. The transponder reader transmits data associated with the coupon or discount ticket from the transponder. Data is transmitted from the transponder reader to the computer. The computer sends data to an Internet website. Thus, a coupon or discount ticket associated with this data can be applied when a customer purchases a product or service.
The data to be read can be associated with a coupon or discount ticket, but the data to be read can also be associated with identification of a product or service. Once read and stored, the data may be sent to the merchant transponder reader.
In one embodiment of the invention, data identifying the product or service is presented to the customer. For example, data identifying a movie video may be presented at the end of a movie review article published in a newspaper. The customer can read the data with a data reader. The data reader stores this data in association with the transponder. This data can be sent to the merchant transponder reader. For example, data identifying a movie video stored in association with a customer's transponder is received at a transponder reader at a rental video store. In this way, the movie video corresponding to the customer can be provided from the rental video store, and the approval of the rental transaction can be obtained from the transponder.
Alternatively, in the above example, the customer may indicate that he / she does not want to borrow the specified movie video at a specific time. The identified movie video title may be stored in the rental video store database as a "wish list" item corresponding to the customer's transponder. When the rental video store is visited at a later date, the customer's transponder can be read by the transponder reader of the rental video store. The customer may access the customer's “wish list” corresponding to the customer's transponder in the merchant database and choose to borrow a movie video from his / her “wish list”.
In another embodiment, when a customer indicates that they want to borrow a specified movie video, the merchant POS terminal communicates with the merchant database or other database to provide information about the specified movie video to the customer. To communicate. Information communicated includes whether the movie is “in stock”, that is, whether it is available, when the movie is borrowed, when it will be returned, and when the movie will be returned. However, it is not limited to these.
In another embodiment, the data to be read can be displayed on the product itself. The customer can use the data reader to read the data displayed on the product and store this data in association with the transponder. After sending this data to the transponder reader, the merchant may identify the product. Further, the transponder reader may be connected to the customer's personal computer. Data identifying the product may be transmitted to the transponder reader, and the data may be transmitted from the reader to the computer. This computer can send data to Internet merchants. By doing so, it is possible to show the customer an Internet website on which the product specified by the data can be purchased. For example, a customer can scan for daily items that are used immediately or used up. Data corresponding to the shopping item list is stored in association with the customer's transponder. This data can be sent to the merchant or Internet merchant and the customer has the option to purchase one, some or all of these items.
Alternatively, the data may be transmitted to a customer's computer printer or a home personal computer linked to the computer printer. If you use a printer, you can print a hard copy of your shopping list. In yet another embodiment, the data may be sent to a database that can identify other information corresponding to the data sent by the customer. This information includes the product name (s) corresponding to the data, the local store or internet site where the product is available, the location of the store or the location of the product in the store, the price of the product, etc. May be. This more detailed information or shopping list can also be sent to the customer's personal digital assistant. More detailed information or a shopping list may be sent to a store in the local store. For example, this store may be on a shopping cart. In this way, the customer has access to more detailed information about the shopping list and the store on the shopping cart.
The transponder utilized in the present invention may be capable of being inserted into or incorporated into a suitable device or form factor. For example, the customer profile associated with the customer's mobile phone transponder may be different from the customer profile associated with the customer's personal digital assistant transponder, and different customer profiles or accounts may be combined into one transponder. You may make it relate. In the case of a single transponder, the customer may have means to select between different customer profiles or accounts. In addition, the transponder may be provided with means for the customer to select one of different preferences or to give an answer to the question.
Still other embodiments of the present invention include additional verification means for transaction authorization. This other verification means may be any means as long as it can confirm the customer as the owner of the transponder. For example, when using a transponder, a customer may be allowed to input a personal identification number (PIN), biometric data, a password, or the like. Other verification means may be used for all transactions, may not be used for any transaction, or may be used only for a given merchant, product, service, transaction type or amount. Good. This predetermined list may be determined by the customer or the merchant. For example, when a transaction exceeds a predetermined purchase amount, another verification means may be required to complete the transaction. In another verification means, the customer moves the transponder in front of the transponder reader in a predetermined manner and performs the verification. Movements made in a predetermined manner are detected by a transponder reader and transmitted to a central database for confirmation. This predetermined method may be any manual movement that can be correctly performed by the customer as many times as necessary. Preference information regarding whether or not another verification means should be directed to the customer may be stored in a customer profile stored in a central database. The preference information regarding whether or not another verification means should be directed to the customer may be stored in the transponder itself or in the merchant POS terminal or database.
The customer's purchase profile may also be stored in a central database. Prior to approving a transaction, the central database may analyze the types of purchases that are required to be approved for settlement. In this analysis, an algorithm can be used to compare purchases that are required to be approved for payment with a customer's purchase profile. Based on this analysis, in particular, when the possibility of fraud is indicated by the analysis, it is possible to subsequently request identity verification or verification from the customer.
In yet another embodiment, the present invention includes a system for associating a unique ID code, information about an individual, and payment information for that individual. In a preferred embodiment, the transponder sends a unique ID code to the transponder reader. The unique ID code is stored in a central database. Information about the transponder user is entered into a central database and associated with a unique ID code. The user's payment information is entered into a central database and associated with a unique ID code. In yet another embodiment, the present invention includes an apparatus for reading a unique ID code from a transponder, reading payment information from a credit card magnetic tape, and associating the unique ID code with payment information. In another embodiment, the invention further includes means for automatically entering information about the individual. For example, the means for automatically entering information may include scanning an individual's driver's license optically or reading a magnetic tape on the back of the driver's license.
Further, the above information may be transmitted from this device to the central database. In another embodiment, payment information can be entered by other means that do not use magnetic tape. For example, payment information may be manually input using a keyboard, or credit card information may be scanned by an optical reader. In another embodiment, the unique ID code can be transmitted from the transponder to the reader and from there further to the central database. At a later stage, payment information associated with the unique ID code can also be sent from the transponder user. For example, the payment information for transmission to the central database may be registered by the user from an Internet website, or the payment information entered on the paper by the user may be scanned later and registered in the central database. Also good. When received at the central database, the payment information is associated with a unique ID code corresponding to the user.
In other embodiments, the means for identifying the transponder is external to the transponder housing, the surface of the package containing or associated with the transponder unit, the surface of the package of the device including the transponder, or the like Provided on the surface of a simple device. The means for identification may include, for example, an optically scannable bar code or other code. The package may include a shipping or promotional package. In this embodiment, the means for identification and the unique ID code stored in the transponder are associated by a central database. Here, user information is transmitted to the central database. The user's payment information is also sent to the central database. The central database associates the means for identification with the corresponding user information and its payment information. For example, the user can present user information and payment information to the merchant. The merchant may or may not use a transponder reader. The merchant can scan the barcode on the transponder package. The merchant sends the barcode, user information and payment information to the central database. The central database matches the barcode with the corresponding unique ID code associated with the transponder. The central database associates user information and payment information with a unique ID code corresponding to the barcode. In this way, the merchant does not need to utilize a transponder reader to register a user with the system and method of the present invention.
Customer transponders, transceivers or user profiles can also be associated with more than one payment method. The customer can enter preferences and indicate the default payment method to use depending on the type of transaction, merchant or purchase amount. Examples of the payment method include, but are not limited to, at least one of a credit card, a debit card, an ATM card, and a bank account.
It is also possible to associate customer transponders or transceivers with two or more different networks or host systems. If the merchant's transceiver reader is presented with a customer transponder that is not currently registered or activated for the host network associated with this merchant reader, the customer's transponder stored in the customer's transponder A unique ID code or sender code may be received by the reader. This code is sent to the merchant's host computer along with the customer's payment information and identity verification information. Customer identity information may be electronically derived and transmitted, such as from a credit / debit card or a driver's license magnetic tape. Alternatively, identification information may be presented separately. In a preferred embodiment, at least one payment method is sent to the host computer along with the transponder's unique ID. The merchant may provide the customer with a document to allow the customer to fill in the customer name, address, phone number, credit card number, debit card number or other payment information or customer information. This document may be pre-printed or affixed with a bar code or other identification code. This identification code can be transmitted to the host computer together with the unique ID and payment information. If information obtained from a document is manually input or optically scanned by a computer, this information can be identified by an identification code and more efficiently matched with the corresponding unique ID and settlement information. Thereafter, all of these pieces of information may be stored together in the host computer.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the user's unique ID code stored on the user's transponder may be associated with the second transponder. A customer profile stored in the central database corresponding to the user's unique ID code can also be associated with the second transponder. This second transponder may be utilized in the system and method of the present invention. In this case, the transactions completed by the second transponder can be collected and presented to the user separately from the transactions completed by the user's transponder. Different payment forms may also be associated with the second transponder rather than the payment information associated with the user's transponder.
For example, a user may rent a car for use on a business trip. This user presents his personal transponder to the rental car agency. The rental car agency associates this user's transponder with the second transponder. Alternatively, the second transponder may be associated with a customer profile that the user uses at a rental car agency. The second transponder may consist of a transponder built into a key associated with the rental car or a transponder associated with a key ring of a key associated with the rental car. The user can make a purchase transaction using the second transponder. The second transponder may use payment information associated with the user's personal transponder or may use other payment information. The second transponder, depending on the user's prior selection or, in the case of a business trip, the prior selection based on the business of the entity employee in the profile stored for the entity employee, which is communicated to the rental car agency. It is also possible to limit the applications allowed for For example, a user's personal credit card may be utilized with the second transponder, or the second transponder may be associated with the user's operating expense credit card instead. When the user returns the rental car to the rental car agency, a receipt is given to the user. This receipt may include not only the car rental transaction, but also all the transactions performed by the second transponder. In this example, the user can enumerate operating expenses more easily when the business trip is over. In yet another embodiment, the second transponder is attached to the same key ring as the rental car's ignition key. In yet another embodiment, the second transponder or ignition key can be removed from the key ring. In this way, even if the user passes the ignition key to a third party (parking staff, parking staff, etc.), the third party cannot access the second transponder.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention, a customer's transponder can be used to make a hotel room available. In one embodiment, a customer who wants to book a hotel room may present his personal transponder to the transponder reader. Here, transaction approval is obtained using the system and method of the present invention. Once approved, the customer is given the hotel room key. The customer may be given a key by a hotel clerk such as a receptionist. Alternatively, a key may be automatically given to a customer by a self-service check-in type store equipped with a transponder reader. In this embodiment, when the room number is not displayed on the room key, the room number may be printed at the store. You may print a transaction receipt at this store. In another embodiment, a separate key for a hotel room is not passed to the customer. Instead, the customer's transponder is associated with the hotel room. A transponder reader is embedded in the door of the hotel room. A hotel room door transponder reader reads the customer's transponder and unlocks the door accordingly.
In yet another embodiment, the present invention includes a system and method for restaurant transactions. In one embodiment of the invention, a customer orders a meal and approves the payment for that meal using the system and method described above for approval of processing at the transponder. Customers can order meals through restaurant employees. Alternatively, the customer may select a meal order using a self-service shop, or may select a meal order using a button on an ordering system usually used by an employee. In other embodiments, the customer can order a meal before arriving at the restaurant. The customer can place an order by automatic selection by phone, an internet website or other suitable means for ordering meals. When arriving at the restaurant, payment for the previously ordered meal is approved using the customer's transponder. The customer's favorite meal order content may be stored in the customer profile. In this case, the customer's transponder is read by the transponder reader when arriving at the restaurant. The preferred meal order content stored in the customer profile is automatically selected and ordered.
When ordering a meal, the customer may wait for the meal to come out at the order counter. Or the customer may go to the dining table. The dining table can be equipped with a transponder reader. In this case, the customer's transponder is read by a transponder reader on the dining table. The transponder reader at the dining table communicates the location of the dining table where the customer is to the restaurant employee. Then, a restaurant employee can bring the customer's meal to the dining table where the customer is located. Alternatively, the customer's “will call” name or nickname may be stored in the customer profile. This "reservation" name or nickname can be communicated to restaurant employees. When the "reservation" name or nickname is called, the customer knows that the meal he ordered is ready and can be received at the designated receiving port. Or, the order contents of a favorite meal are stored in the customer profile. Upon entering the restaurant, the customer may go to the dining table without placing an order at the order counter. The dining table can be equipped with a transponder reader. In this case, the customer's transponder is read by a transponder reader on the dining table. The order contents of the favorite meal stored in the customer profile and the location of the dining table where the customer is located are transmitted to the restaurant side. This allows customers to take their favorite meal orders to the dining table where the customer is located.
In yet another embodiment, the customer orders a meal before he arrives at the restaurant. This meal order may be made using any suitable means. For example, meals can be ordered using an Internet website, telephone, car phone, car phone internet connection, and the like. Upon arrival at the restaurant, the customer parks his car in one of a plurality of designated parking spaces at the restaurant. A transponder reader is associated with the parking space. The transponder reader reads the customer's transponder. The transponder reader communicates the location of the customer's parking space to the restaurant employee. Restaurant employees can deliver ordered meals to customers in customer parking spaces. Alternatively, the customer can place an order while in the designated parking space of the restaurant. For example, when a customer's transponder is read by a transponder reader associated with a restaurant parking space, the order details of the favorite food stored in the customer profile are transmitted to the restaurant side. Thus, the ordered favorite food is delivered to the customer parking space.
The above embodiments, particularly those for restaurant orders and payments, have several advantages over existing systems and methods. For example, customers do not have to wait side by side to place an order. All customers can order at the same time. Further, in some embodiments, customer orders are made automatically or by the customer themselves, so there is no need to educate restaurant employees to take customer orders, and the Do not need to speak.
Data about customer preferences may be stored in the customer profile. This customer profile can be stored in a central database. Customer preferences may include whether the customer wants a receipt for shopping, what type of receipt, etc. For example, a customer may want to receive a receipt for each transaction, or may require a receipt only for certain transactions that exceed a predetermined purchase price. Alternatively, the customer may not like to receive a receipt for each transaction. Alternatively, customers may prefer to receive daily email notifications detailing purchases made within the last 24 hours.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a customer accumulates loyalty points in response to a transaction and these points are associated with the customer in a central database. Once enough loyalty points have been accumulated, the merchant can offer loyalty rewards to the customer. This loyalty reward may be goods or services that are provided free or at a discounted price. Alternatively, the loyalty reward may be a credit or discount that can be used in future transactions with the merchant. When the customer next purchases, the loyalty reward eligibility of the customer can be communicated to the merchant employee. Alternatively, the customer may receive a loyalty reward notification by email or telephone, or may receive this notification by accessing the customer's account on an Internet website. In addition, the customer may be provided with a means for confirming the qualification for loyalty reward for the merchant. For example, a special loyalty reward code or courtesy ticket may be given to a customer or printed from an email or website. Alternatively, the loyalty reward qualification may be embedded in the customer's transponder. When the merchant's transponder reader later reads the customer's transponder, the transponder reader conveys the loyalty reward qualification to the merchant.
In yet another embodiment, the present invention can be used to qualify for participation in a service or event. For example, in this embodiment, a customer can purchase a ticket, and this ticket purchase is associated with the customer in a central database. A unique code for the customer's transponder or other means for identifying the customer's transponder is communicated to the event venue. The customer's transponder is read by the transponder reader at the event venue. It is recognized that the customer's transponder is associated with the customer who has already paid for the ticket. A corresponding receipt, ticket stub or seat assignment may be printed and handed to the customer. However, receipts, ticket stubs or seating are not necessary because the transponder can confirm that the customer has paid for the event or service.
In yet another embodiment of the present invention, preferences related to a particular type of shopping can be stored in the customer profile. For example, a customer profile may only allow transactions made within a specific region, at a specific type of merchant, for a specific type of product, or within a fixed transaction amount.
It should be noted that although the embodiment of the present invention and the example of the present invention disclosed above are exemplified by the transponder device, the present invention is not limited to this. The present invention does not require a transponder. For example, if the merchant does not use a transponder reader, the customer may provide other means for communicating a unique ID code stored on the customer's transponder. This other means may include information stored in the customer profile that is specific to that customer. For example, a customer can provide PIN, biometric data or knowledge only for that customer. This information can be communicated directly to the central database without allowing the merchant agent to access the information.
A preferred method for processing financial transactions will now be described with reference to FIGS. As described above, the
FIG. 13 is a flowchart illustrating a
FIG. 14 is a detailed flowchart showing the steps performed by
The customer can also check the default payment method that applies to participating merchants for whom no other payment method has been verified. This default payment method will also apply to new merchants who join the
When the customer enters the requested information, the
FIG. 14b shows another preferred embodiment of the
If the customer wishes to shop with the newly registered customer's transceiver, as shown at
FIG. 15 is a detailed flowchart showing each step executed in
Upon receipt of the customer / sender ID number, the
Another embodiment of the invention includes a
In the case of a transaction that requires approval, such as in the case of a credit card transaction, the
Even when the transaction does not require approval (ie, when using cash or other liquid assets), the
Customers can also use the
FIG. 16 is a detailed flowchart showing each step executed in
The process shown in FIG. 16 does not include a process executed when the user tries to operate his / her transponder due to loss or theft. In this case, the database is quickly updated to prevent unauthorized use of the transponder by unauthorized persons.
FIG. 17 is a detailed flowchart showing each process executed in
