本発明はインクジェット方式の画像形成装置に関し、特に印字ヘッドを固定させ、かつ回転ドラムを回転させながら回転ドラムに巻回された記録材(紙、布等)上に印字を行う型式の画像形成装置に関する。

インクジェット方式の画像形成装置には、印字ヘッドを移動させて印字を行う型式のものと、上記の如く、印字ヘッドを固定させ、かつ回転ドラムを回転させながら回転ドラムに巻回された記録材上に印字を行う型式のものとがある。後者の画像形成装置においては、回転ドラムの軸方向が主走査方向となるので、回転ドラムに巻回された記録材の印字幅(軸方向長さ)分以上の長さの印字ヘッド(広幅の印字ヘッド)が必要となる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
上述したように、印字ヘッドを固定させ、かつ回転ドラムを回転させながら回転ドラムに巻回された記録材上に印字を行う型式の画像形成装置においては、広幅の印字ヘッドが必要になるため、印字ヘッドが大型化してしまう。

また、印字の解像度はノズルの配列(ピッチ)により決められており、解像度に応じた印字ヘッドを製作しなければならず、ノズルの配列の細かいものは位置精度が要求され製造が難しいが、印字ヘッドが大型化すると、さらにそのコストが高くなるという問題がある。

本発明は、印字ヘッドを固定させ、かつ回転ドラムを回転させながら回転ドラムに巻回された記録材上に印字を行う型式を前提とし、印字ヘッドを大型化することなく、高速に印字可能な画像形成装置を提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するために、請求項1記載の発明は、複数の印字ヘッドを固定し、回転ドラムに巻回されて移動する記録材上に印字を行うインクジェット方式の画像形成装置において、前記複数の印字ヘッドは、印字動作時に、それぞれのもつノズルが前記回転ドラムの軸方向であって前記記録材の印字幅方向に該印字幅に対応して配列されるとともに、お互いが前記記録材の移動方向にずれた状態で配置されるように、保持体に保持されており、前記保持体は、印字動作以外のときに、前記複数の印字ヘッドとともに、該印字ヘッドのノズル配列方向に移動可能であり、該移動により前記印字ヘッドを前記回転ドラムから離れた位置にまで退避させることを特徴とする。

図1は本発明の実施の形態を示す画像形成装置の概略構成図、図2は印字ヘッドの正面図である。
図1に示すインクジェット方式の画像形成装置は、印字ヘッド1により回転ドラム2に巻回された記録材3に印字を行うものであある。記録材3は、通常はコート紙であるが、専用のインクを使えば布であってもよい。回転ドラム2はACモータ4により回転するようになっている。また回転ドラム2の軸にはロータリーエンコーダ5が取り付けられている。

本発明によれば、複数の印字ヘッドについて、印字動作時に、それぞれのもつノズルが記録材の印字幅方向に該印字幅に対応して配列されるとともに、お互いが記録材の移動方向にずれた状態で配置されるようにしたので、広幅でない印字ヘッドにより広幅の印字を効率よく行うことが出来、装置の小型化と印字ヘッド製造コストの低減を図ることが出来る。
また、複数の印字ヘッドを保持する保持体が、印字動作以外のときに、前記複数の印字ヘッドとともに、該印字ヘッドのノズル配列方向に移動可能であるので、印字ヘッドを記録材の印字領域から離れた位置に退避させることが出来、記録材の取り付け作業を迅速に行うことが出来る。
